Why Did Marylanders Flock to a Virginia Gun Show this Weekend?

Because tomorrow one of the nation’s strictest gun control laws passed this year will go into effect.

Signed by Governor Martin O’Malley, the Maryland bill will ban 45 kinds of assault weapons and require those wanting to buy handguns to undergo fingerprinting. Second Amendment supporters in Maryland crossed state lines to attend this weekend’s “Nation’s Gun Show” at the The Dulles Expo center in Chantilly, Virginia, and applied for a record number of guns before the bill arrives on Tuesday.

From WTOP.com:

The law will also ban 45 types of assault weapons, although people who own them now will be able to keep them. That provision has contributed to record sales. The Maryland State Police received 106,772 gun-purchase applications so far this year as of Sept. 20, the most recent date for which data was available Friday. That compares with 70,099 applications processed last year, which had been the previous annual record.

"There's never been this kind of increase," said state police spokesman Greg Shipley, who added that people have been applying for gun purchases at the rate of about 1,000 a day over the past two weeks.

Elgin Fontaine, a Maryland resident with an AR-10 assault weapon, explained to NBCWashington how the bill will affect him personally.

The ban is gonna wipe out a lot of guns, and this particular style of gun that I have will be banned.”

He then explained why he attended the Dulles expo gun show to buy magazines.

“Because I wanted to make sure that I had something I probably won’t have the opportunity to have again.”

It appears Obamacare isn’t the only Tuesday arrival that is racking freedom lovers’ nerves.
