New York Sen. Chuck Schumer is poised to become the new Senate minority leader, following the retirement of current leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) effective this January. Schumer announced his intent to run on Tuesday evening following his reelection to the Senate. Reid did not seek reelection.

Schumer is expected to run unopposed. He will be the first Jewish party leader in Senate history.
