Both The White House and the French embassy deny that Mrs. Obama ever characterized serving as First Lady as "hell."

That would mean that the biography -- reportedly authorized by Carla Bruni, who also participated in its writing -- contains a lie. The fact that Bruni authorized and participated in writing the biography means this can't be blamed simply on flawed reporting. It means

someone isn't telling the truth: Is it Michelle Obama or Carla Bruni?
