McCain Suspends Campaign

Even  more than seeking postponement of Friday night's debate,John McCain has issued a statement effectively suspending his campaign and calling for emergency talks -- to include him and Senator Obama -- to craft a legislative approach to handling the market situation.

Perhaps it's a much-needed reminder that the situation we're facing is more than a market glitch that one party or another can hope works to its electoral advantage.  We're confronting what, in  many ways, looks like something of a crisis.

It will be interesting -- and telling -- how the Obama campaign responds.  If it refuses to work in good faith with the McCain campaign to resolve the crisis, it will be hard not to wonder whether Barack is willing to gamble with the country's long-term financial health just for his own personal political advantage.
