Shove It: The GOP Saw Right Through The Democrats' Opposition Research Pledge

President Donald Trump told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos that he wouldn’t necessarily turn down dirt on his political opponent if it came from a foreign source. The Left went apoplectic. This rehashes the Russian collusion nonsense, but it’s on Trump’s terms. There shouldn’t be any doubt here. The liberal media has been driven insane by this presidency. They’re corrupt. They’re stupid. They can’t cover this White House accurately. And now that the Russia investigation headed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller is over, with the president being totally exonerated on Russian collusion, Trump is going to poke the bear and keep these legions of idiots at full froth. Keep them agitated and they’ll keep making mistakes. That’s how it’s been for nearly four years now.

Democrats think this gave off the signal for foreign governments to attack our elections again.  Oh goodie, the party whose weak spot is foreign policy is going to lecture us about cyber security. The Party that crafted the Iran deal, which has evaporated into the ether, marred by failure and misery, is going to take the mantle of keeping us safe. It’ll be just like how they handled Russia when Obama was in office, in which that administration did nothing. You even have Senate Democrats saying Obama dropped the ball.  CNN’s Jake Tapper had a more accurate description: they were asleep at the switch

The Republicans know this, which is why they saw right through this shoddy pledge the Democrats tried to get them to sign off on in the wake of this interview. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) pretty much tried to get the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) to agree not to accept opposition research (via Roll Call):

Leaders of the NRCC and the DCCC were close to an agreement last year to not use stolen information in campaigns, but negotiations broke down over using that information if it was in the public domain.

Following Trump’s comments, current DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos called on her NRCC counterpart, Tom Emmer, to agree not to use stolen information, accusing the committee and Trump of embracing hacked materials and making the country vulnerable to more frequent attacks.

NRCC spokesman Chris Pack said in a statement to CQ Roll Call on Thursday that Bustos “is not serious about an agreement on cyber-attacks because if she was, then she wouldn’t be sending out an endless barrage of juvenile press releases to the national press corps on the matter.”

Pack said the NRCC was “actively working with outside experts and law enforcement to make sure we do not fall victim to another attack.”

Approached by CQ Roll Call later Thursday, Emmer declined to say how he personally felt about using stolen information during a campaign and refused to comment on Trump’s assertions about acceptance of aid from foreign actors.

Good move. If the NRCC had agreed, it would’ve given Democrats a propaganda win, dividing the party, and creating heartburn when it wasn’t necessary. And like the NRCC said, Democrats are already fundraising off this; this would’ve been just another cherry on top of their bullcrap sundae.

With the Trump dossier, this virtue signaling is even more absurd. Folks, the Clintons funded the effort for ex-MI6 spy Christopher Steele to compile this opposition research document that contained Russian sources, some of whom are still active in the Kremlin. There is more to point to Clinton-Russia collusion, but she’s a Democrat. And alas, that’s the point with this circus. For Democrats, it’s not ok when Republicans do it, or think about doing it, but it’s fine for them to do it. There are two separate sets of rules. We all know this; we just have a president that says ‘screw it’ to this unsaid political order between the two parties and political philosophies that’s accentuated by the liberal media. And because you know that, along with how broken the media is, you can have a helluva a lot of fun. So, please—we all know Democrats are condescending elitists, but even this is just shameless. It only underscore that 2020 both sides will be willing to do anything to win. I’m okay with that. It’s going to be a bloodbath, which is at the heart of all politics.
