Al Franken Still Plans To Attend Event With Griffin After Trump Beheading Fiasco

Despite Kathy Griffin’s beheading President Trump stunt ending in total disaster, as well as an exercise in bad taste, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) remains committed to appearing with the embattled comedian in support of his book tour. The Minnesota Democrat’s office issued a statement saying, “Sen. Franken thinks Kathy Griffin is a talented comedian and respects her right to free speech, but believes this image was inappropriate and not the kind of thing that should be part of our national discourse.”

On CNN yesterday, the former SNL writer and cast member said that it was good that Griffin apologized, though not directly to the president or his family, for this act that was a “horrible mistake.” The event will be held on July 7 in Beverly Hills, California. Mr. Franken’s book is called “Al Franken: Giant of the Senate.”

Griffin has since been fired from her co-hosting gig for CNN's New Year's Eve program, along with a deluge of condemnation from across the political spectrum. Former Gov. Mitt Romney, Chelsea Clinton, and Keith Olbermann have all voiced their distaste for this cheap publicity stunt.

On SiriusXM's The Press Pool, Sen. Franken reiterated his commitment to having Griffin show up at his event.
