MOMent: Mom and World Shooting Champion Julie Golob Launches Firearms Safety Campaign

As anti-gun activists work overtime to court moms, world shooting champion, Smith & Wesson team captain and mother of two Julie Golob has launched a firearms safety campaign of her own, Take a MOMent, just in time for Mother's Day.

"No matter what side of the gun control argument you are on, learning about gun safety and having the conversation with our kids about it just makes sense," Golob says. "With Take a MOMent I am hoping to encourage mom's who have guns in their home to talk to their children because I believe that firearm safety awareness is a proactive and effective way to help reduce gun violence."

Here's more information about the project from her website:

I truly believe that, no matter if you are pro-gun or anti-gun, everyone should know and understand the basic rules of firearm safety. It is equally important for parents to have the discussion about guns and what to do if your child finds one. Both NSSF’s Project ChildSafe and the NRA’s Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program are excellent. They offer resources for parents, educators and child care providers to help ensure kids stay safe.

While some are using Mother’s Day week to push a gun control agenda I’d like to encourage mom’s to Take a MOMent. Talk to your kids about firearm safety. Help them learn what to do around firearms and have an open, honest discussion about guns and gun safety.

Golob kicked off a social media campaign earlier this week to raise awareness by sharing the graphic below on Twitter and Facebook.

"Every gun owner knows that owning a firearm is a great responsibility, even more so when you have children. Knowing and understanding the basic rules of firearm safety and securing firearms is critical for all gun owners. Equally important is talking to children about guns and that’s where Take a MOMent comes in," Golob told me about the project. "Where some are using Mother’s Day to push a gun control agenda in Washington, Take a MOMent stresses the importance of actually talking to kids about firearms. Small children need to know that firearms are not toys, they should not touch them and if they find one they should immediately go tell an adult. Kids who are learning to shoot and hunt need to know and understand the firearm safety rules just like adults."

During the 2014 NRA Annual Meetings in Indianapolis last month, Golob was proudly featured in a campaign against former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's new gun control efforts.

UPDATE: Take a listen to Golob's recent interview with NRA News.
