GOP Congressman Endorses Libertarian for President

Retiring Congressman Scott Rigell has officially given his support to Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson for president. He made the announcement during an interview Friday that he was voting for the third-party ticket.

Rigell represents a moderate district off the Virginia coast and will not be seeking re-election after his term ends in 2017.

He is not the first republican representative to announce his intentions to vote for another candidate besides Donald Trump. His colleague in the House, Richard Hanna of New York, gave an endorsement to Hillary Clinton last week.

Rigell had been an early detractor of Trump in the presidential campaign. He said over the winter that he could not vote for the now-republican nominee for the nation’s highest office. He has determined the libertarian ticket to be the best option available.

Johnson and his running-mate, Bill Weld, have been vigorously courting disaffected republicans for support.
