A man walked into the Trump National Doral Golf Club Friday morning, shouted anti-Trump rhetoric and opened fire, reportedly in hopes of "luring police." His plan worked. The suspect, 42-year-old Jonathan Oddi from Doral, Florida, was shot multiple times by local officers. He is now in stable condition. No officer was shot, but one was left with a broken wrist.
The incident was by all accounts strange. Oddi reportedly brought an American flag into the resort lobby and draped it over a counter, before firing shots at the roof and chandeliers. Miami-Dade police Director Juan Perez said the suspect then "waited for officers to engage him."
"He did succeed" in his effort to lure police, "and he did lose," Perez noted.
Eric Trump thanked law enforcement for their no-nonsense response.
Perez also commended the officers.
“In my opinion, they probably saved a hell of a lot of lives today, because this could have gone a lot worse,” Perez said.
Although the shooter clearly was no fan of Trump, police are not discounting anything in their investigation - including terrorism.
"We are not discounting anything at this point," Perez said. "We still have a lot of work to do."
