Pro-Choice Blog: ‘Support the Troops’ By Supporting Their Right to Abortions

You know those ‘Support the Troops’ stickers on your car? Well, according to some pro-choice advocates, they should stand for military abortion access.

Monday marked the 37th anniversary of the passage of the Hyde Amendment, legislation which eliminates coverage of abortion under Medicaid in all but fifteen states. Instead of celebrating this amendment, which has saved more than 1 million people, some pro-choice groups are lamenting the legislation -- especially for one group in particular.

“The ultimate irony is that while millions of “support the troops” ribbons will be displayed this year, there is a complete lack of support for comprehensive medical and reproductive medical services for military personnel.

Want to truly support your troops? Write to your senator and ask them to commit to repealing the Hyde Amendment.”

Yup, according to ChoiceUSA, the best way to serve our soldiers is not to boost their morale with USO tours, but to ensure they can terminate any unwanted pregnancies.

If you read the fine print in the most recent National Defense Authorization Act, you’ll see that the government already does provide financial assistance for those wanting abortions in the military.

Subtitle A--TRICARE and Other Health Care Benefits

Sec. 704. Use of Department of Defense funds for abortions in cases of rape and incest.

The legislation addresses, in part, the alarming issue of sexual assault in the military. Now, I can’t imagine the emotional trauma a soldier must feel from being raped while fighting for our country. But, add to that the emotional distress of abortion? There’s enough bloodshed on the battlefield.

So, pro-choicers may think they are acting nobly, but abortion is not something worth fighting for.
