“I’ll seek common ground – we all must – but sometimes you have to take a stand on sacred ground.”
During a press conference today at the National Press Club, Texas State Senator Wendy Davis, known and even heroized for her 11-hour filibuster defending late-term abortion in June, stood by her pro-choice activism by calling it ‘sacred.’
Sound familiar? House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi also referred to abortion as ‘sacred ground’ when taking questions at a June press conference.
But Davis’s comment on late-term abortion wasn’t the only disturbing moment from today’s luncheon. At one point a reporter asked Davis if she supported any limits on abortion -- to which she responded no.
Maureen Ferguson of The Catholic Association released the following statement today about Davis’s outspoken abortion advocacy:
Wendy Davis is in DC to promote her late-term abortion agenda -- past the point at which babies are developed enough to ‘suck a thumb, yawn, stretch, and make faces,’ according to WebMD. Ms. Davis is out of touch with the majority of women, as the headline in the Washington Post's recent compilation of polls states, 'Guess who likes the GOP’s 20-week abortion ban? Women.
Davis's comments are not only out of touch with women - they're out of touch with reality. There are many things I’d call sacred -- one’s faith, one’s relationships, etc. But the murder of unborn children? Somehow that doesn’t make the list.
Today’s luncheon also aimed the spotlight on Davis’s political future when she declared she’s considering running for governor.
“I can say with absolute certainty that I will run for one of two offices: my state senate seat or for the governor.”
Davis sounds awfully confident. Yet, according to recent polling, the odds are not in her favor. A recent Public Policy Polling survey reveals she trails Gov. Rick Perry by 14 points in a hypothetical matchup.

Politico’s reporting on the NPC event only focused on her political announcement and made no mention of her strange abortion comments, at one point noting she “touted her bipartisan credentials and told her personal story in emotional terms.”
Davis’s story is indeed an emotional one. She had her first child when she was just a teenager and raised her daughter alone while living in a trailer park. She endured through the hardship to graduate from Harvard and eventually become a state senator in one of the most populated states in America. If anyone could be a powerful voice in the pro-life movement, proving that a young mother with an unplanned pregnancy can succeed in life, it would be Wendy Davis.
Unfortunately -- and heartbreakingly -- the 50-year-old mother is instead spending her time speaking for 11 straight hours on the importance of abortion rights and calling the procedure ‘sacred.’ What a wasted opportunity.
