Unearthed footage from a 2023 sermon showed that Democrat Senate candidate James Talarico once claimed that “God is not a Christian” and joked about his belief that “beer is better than religion.”
On October 22, 2023, Talarico delivered a sermon at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church entitled “God Is Not a Christian: Confronting Christian Nationalism.” Talarico told the congregation that “God is not a Christian” and that “Jesus is against anything that gets in the way of the love between neighbors, including religion.”
He opened with a series of jokes on “why beer is better than religion” that included punchlines like “there are laws against forcing beer on minors who cannot think for themselves” and “if you devoted your life to beer, there are groups to help you.”
Talarico would go on to state that the belief that the United States is a Christian nation is “historically inaccurate" and “theologically blasphemous,” and that Christian conservatives incorrectly argue that the Christian faith preaches against abortion.
Talarico further argued that, if the United States were a Christian nation, it would endorse his litany of pet issues like student loan forgiveness and universal healthcare.
Talarico’s history of promoting heretic beliefs and issuing questionable statements has dominated the midterm election cycle. He has claimed that the Annunciation of the Lord is justification for abortion and that God is non-binary, all while labeling himself as a “Christian who hates Christianity.”

Talarico’s progressive beliefs follow that of his Pastor Jim Rigby, whom Talarico has called a mentor. Rigby’s church employs an “inclusive Bible” that alters the text into non-gendered language, with changes to the Lord’s Prayer beginning as “our Father-Mother.” The church does not use titles for Jesus Christ like “Lord” or “King,” as to not promote “rape culture.”
The church also distributes sexually explicit books to children that proclaim that “God is queer,” and features a cross draped with a pride flag. Tithes to the church fund trans summer camps and abortion through organizations like Planned Parenthood.
Talarico’s faux Christianity will take on conservative Republican Ken Paxton in November for control of the Texas Senate seat.
