Condoleezza Rice: Football Coach?

Condoleezza Rice has accomplished a lot of firsts. During the George W. Bush administration, she became the first black woman to serve as national security adviser, before serving as the first black female secretary of state from 2005 to 2009. Now, she has the potential to be the first woman to interview for a head coaching position in the NFL.

About a week ago, the Cleveland Browns General Manager John Dorsey said that he would happily interview a woman for the now open position of head coach. The Browns have struggled mightily the past few years. At the end of 2017, they emerged with a 0-16 record. "Total darkness," as NFL.com put it. That abysmal league showing happened only once before, courtesy of the Detroit Lions.

The team cut ties with coach Hue Jackson after two awful seasons and a particularly grisly game versus the Pittsburgh Steelers (33-18). Hence why Rice, both an avid football fan and a Cleveland Browns fanatic, doesn't sound all that crazy right now.

But, at the moment it's all hearsay.

Rice does have some experience in the football world. She worked on the College Football Playoff selection committee from 2013 to 2016. She also hasn't shied away from the biggest NFL controversy in recent memory.

"I personally believe very strongly that the American flag stands for the millions of people who have sacrificed over the years," she said on Fox News, urging players not to "alienate" fans by kneeling during the national anthem.

The Browns, and the NFL at large, could probably use her help. But, Rice shot down the reports...for now.
