'Wrinkle in Time' Star Storm Reid Shares How Faith Keeps Her Grounded in Hollywood

Fans of Madison L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time are eager to see the beloved book come to life on the big screen on March 9. The young lady at the center of the Disney film, 14-year-old Storm Reid, chatted with Townhall about her major milestone in landing the role of Meg Murry.

Murry, the female protagonist in A Wrinkle in Time, is a socially awkward, yet intelligent young woman who travels to another dimension to help save her scientist father. She is accompanied along the way by three mystical characters named Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Which and Mrs. Who. As she embarks on her imaginative journey, she discovers the forces between good and evil.

Reid told Townhall she first read A Wrinkle in Time in 6th grade and “loved” the character of Meg. Yet, she didn’t exactly see herself in the character.

“Actually I didn’t see myself being able to portray Meg because Meg was written as a Caucasian girl,” she said. “To be able to get the opportunity to represent the girls who look like me and be able to still tell Meg’s story, it’s so amazing and I’m so grateful.”

Reid was the first actress to audition for Director Ava Duvernay. The way things turned out, she must have made quite the first impression.

“I just went in the room trying to do my best,” Reid recalled. “I didn’t think I was going to book it but I just told myself, ‘go in, try do your best, be yourself, and try to impress Ms. Ava for something else in the future,’ so I guess I was, I don’t know. I guess it’s the talent that God gave me.”

Reid gave God the glory on more than one occasion. Following the red carpet premiere in Los Angeles on Monday, the young actress posted on Instagram how thankful she was to God for the opportunity.

The pressure of being the film's lead was compounded by the fact her co-stars were some huge A-listers. Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and Chris Pine, to name a few.

Before watching the film at the premiere, Reid said she saw it a few weeks before "at Miss Oprah’s house."

Not something everyone can say.

Reid heaped praise on her famous co-stars, but these Oscar winners and nominees had plenty of positive feedback for the young star too. Reese called her a "phenomenal performer." Oprah said she was, "talented, gracious and generous." That has to be a confidence boost, Townhall asked.

"It means the world to me and it makes me very excited," Reid said. "It's such a blessing to be around these great artists. It’s a blessing to have them in my corner."

With all the Hollywood flash, it can be hard to stay humble. Thankfully, her faith keeps her grounded.

"Faith means everything to me," she said. "I know if I have a mustard seed of faith God will move mountains. Live by faith. Even if I’m going through this amazing time, faith in God is still No. 1 to me. Or there may be times when I’m not feeling so great and faith in God is still important to me. I’m glad my life is centered around God and faith and family."

A Wrinkle in Time, directed by Ava Duvernay and produced by Catherine Hand, hits theaters March 9. Until then, check out the trailer.
