Nancy Pelosi admitted to George Stephanopoulos on Sunday that the battle of the bulge at the border is the worst it’s gotten since the 2019 caravans – especially for children. Biden inherited a “broken system” from Trump that’s become a “humanitarian challenge,” she said, a surge that was caused by “climate change” in Central America.
Saying that the border challenge is a “transition from what was wrong” in Trump’s administration, Pelosi quoted “our friends” from the evangelical movement who said the U.S. Refugee Settlement Program is the crown jewel of American humanitarianism.
Sigh. Boy does this woman love to smear ice cream over manure.
So let’s translate. Trump fixed the border. Biden messed it up. Democrats can’t cover it up. So Pelosi uses propaganda to distort a simple fact: the border is a disaster zone because the political climate changed in the White House.
Biden – who has no plans to visit the border – shut down wall construction, eased border controls, halted deportations, and ended Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy. The message: “Come on in, folks!”
Worst, Pelosi now uses children as Trojan ponies to break the law, while drug smugglers, human traffickers, and violent criminals trot through border cracks. “Customs” cartels now put wristbands on illegal border crossers to help streamline the heavier human traffic. The wristbands include personal IDs, letting them know who paid, and who didn’t. Higher demand brings higher prices: Mexicans, $2,500; Central Americans, $3,000; Chinese, $5,000; Russians and Arabs, $9,000.
Using children as kryptonite is helping to perpetuate a protean system of comprehensive illegal immigration. Throw children into the mix and America’s sense of civility becomes an Achilles heel that makes them gullible to mushy law-breaking.

Predictably, Chuck Schumer (who reminded us that his middle name, Ellis, comes from Ellis Island and he named his daughters, Emma and Emily, after Lady Liberty’s poet Emily Lazarus) jumped on the illegal immigration paddy wagon on ABC’s The View last week.
“[Biden’s] view of immigration is not like Donald Trump’s, who is nasty, negative, horrible to immigrants,” Schumer told Meghan McCain. “[Biden’s] view is more like your father’s view and my view, which is compassionate but also competent, … But I’ve got to give [the Biden administration] a little bit of a chance because they inherited a big, big mess, created by Donald Trump.”
The same Chuck Schumer was as blunt as Trump on illegal immigration in 2009.
“Illegal immigration is wrong, plain and simple,” he said.
Schumer was so crystal clear because the law is crystal clear. There is a difference between legal and illegal immigration. Today, most Democrats smush the two together. In fact, Hillary Clinton thinks the “i”-word should be removed from the lexicon.
“… the people at the heart of this issue are children, parents, families, DREAMers. … They have names and hopes and dreams that deserve to be respected.”
Really? Back in the good old days of just a few years ago, Democrats never pretended not to know the difference between legal and illegal.
Guess who said this? “I am, you know, adamantly against illegal immigration.” Correct! Hillary Clinton.
How about this?
“… Mexico must do its share because the day will come when America could be the welfare system for Mexico, is gone. We simply can’t afford it," Dianne Feinstein said in 1993.
Harry Reid would be canceled if he said this today:
“If making it easy to be an illegal alien is not enough, how about offering a reward for being an illegal immigrant? No sane country would do that, right? Guess again. If you break our laws by entering this country without permission and give birth to a child, we reward that child with U.S. citizenship …”
One more:
“… we will try to do more to speed the deportation of illegal aliens who are arrested for crimes, to better identify illegal aliens in the workplace … We are a nation of immigrants. But we are also a nation of laws." That was Bill Clinton.
President Clinton was so concerned about illegal immigration that he appointed Texas Democrat Barbara Jordan to chair the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform (created in 1990). He asked her to come up with recommendations that could be implemented into policy by 1997. She did.
Jordan concluded that America must make a clear distinction between legal and illegal immigration. On illegal immigration, she was guided by the rule of law. On legal immigration, she was guided by the national interest, concluding that America had a duty to curb legal immigration when it jeopardized the national interests.
“The issue of immigration is not a partisan issue,” she said at the United We Stand America National Convention in 1995, calling immigration a privilege, not a right.
“We must control illegal immigration before it erodes legal immigration. ... The commission defines credibility in immigration policy by a simple yardstick: Those who should get in, get in. Those who should be kept out, are kept out. And those who should not be here, are required to leave.”
Jordan denounced hate toward immigrants but cemented her recommendations to creating policies that are anchored in law.
“For immigration policy to make sense it is necessary to make distinctions between those who obey the law and those who violate it,” she said. “Therefore, we disagree with those who would label any effort to control immigration as somehow anti-immigrant. Unlawful immigration is not acceptable.”
Immigration policy makes no sense, today. But the law hasn’t changed; Democrats have. The “big, big mess” will only be cleaned up when its rank and file let go of misplaced compassion and follow the law. “Always follow your heart,” Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) once said, “but take your brains with you.”
The border situation is a full-blown crisis. We’re not stupid. Real people are dying. Ranchers’ property rights are being violated and their lives put in danger. As border agents get bum-rushed, drug smugglers and human traffickers slither into the cracks and crevices of American cities. As inflation creeps up, diverting billions of scarce tax dollars to reward those who violate the law, punishes those who obey the law.
This country has to get back to enforcing the law.
But given their intoxication with power these days, it’s not likely that Pelosi and her Democrats would ever say – without equivocating – that “Unlawful immigration is not acceptable.”
Yet, that’s the solution. Sticking to the law is our real border wall. And it’s got to be done with, or without, this new crop of Democrats.
