If my email in-box is any indication, the Obama White House and its allies may have bitten off much more than they can chew as they look to weaken or abolish the Second Amendment to the Constitution and our right to bear arms.

Over the last two weeks I have heard from a growing list of Second Amendment supporters, members of the NRA, and those simply worried about the continual erosion of our rights as crafted by the Founding Fathers.

Why I am being contacted now has to do with the fact that last year Simon & Schuster published my latest novel titled Vengeance Is Mine. It features a private investigator who is strongly conservative and proudly espouses traditional values throughout the novel.

That said, it is the main character’s opinion on a "fictional" liberal president and gun confiscation that had readers pausing to email me. With regard to that subject, the P.I. presciently opines:

"As a proud member of the NRA and a very strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, I nodded my head in admiration of Tommy's Remington shotgun and his belief in self-protection. With the current liberal occupant of the Oval Office and his allies in Congress and the media working day and night to take away our guns and ammunition, I sincerely hoped Tommy had more where that came from."

That particular bit of dialog was actually written several years before the horrific shooting in Connecticut which not only shocked our nation to its core but which has caused many to not only question the need for the Second Amendment but to threaten and wish ill upon the NRA and America’s legal gun owners.

After the unspeakable tragedy in Connecticut, predictable responses rapidly followed. Sadly, the most prominent being Obama’s former Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s philosophy of never letting “a serious crisis go to waste.” Many have followed his advice to the letter as they have gone on the attack. Next comes a pathetic collection of our nation’s political “leaders” who will use any high-profile issue to divert attention from the fact that they are too spineless to deal with the crippling problems plaguing our country and undermining our very way of life. Last comes those who are honestly trying to make sense of this ultimate loss in life by analyzing every angle.

As these responses play out, it appears the far-left is getting the opposite outcome they have been seeking by any means. According to the FBI, a record 2.8 million background checks for gun purchases took place in December -- a 49 percent increase from the previous December. This on top of the previous record of 2 million background checks the previous month after Mr. Obama won re-election.

Reality is often much worse than fiction and the freedom-eradicating policies of our ever-expanding nanny state drive much of our most frightening realities.
