Before running for Congress in 2002, Dr. Michael Burgess was a practicing ob-gyn in North Texas for over 25 years.
Dr. Burgess serves on the prestigious House Energy and Commerce Committee, where he is the Chairman of the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade Subcommittee and a senior member of the Health Subcommittee and the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. Additionally, he serves on the powerful Rules Committee, tasked with helping to determine how healthcare legislation is considered on the House floor. In 2009, Dr. Burgess founded the Congressional Health Caucus, on which he serves as co-chairman.
Due in large part to his extensive medical background, Dr. Burgess has been a strong advocate for health care legislation aimed at reducing health care costs, improving choices, reforming liability laws to put the needs of patients first, and ensuring there are enough doctors in the public and private sector to care for America’s patients and veterans.
Raised in Denton, Texas, Dr. Burgess graduated with both an undergraduate and a Masters degree from the University of North Texas. He received his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and completed his residency at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
