Bible Passage: 1 Peter 1:13-25
Discussion Question: How can periodically reviewing the biblical account of Christ's death strengthen believers' devotion to Him?
Food for Thought:
Though he may be considered a polarizing figure in Hollywood, there is a singular event in Mel Gibson's film career that should give all Christians pause. In the 2004 release "The Passion of the Christ" which recounts the final hours of Christ's life, there is an obscure detail during the crucifixion scene that shouldn't go unnoticed, when the audience sees the hand of the Roman solider who drives the nails into Christ's hands. What the audience doesn't see is the face of that soldier. And that's by design.
Gibson said, "It was me that put him on the cross. It was my sins that put him there." He said that because Jesus died for our sins, and we are responsible for putting him to death, then no one face should have been shown during that scene. All of our faces, all of our sins, nailed Jesus to the cross.
From time to time in your study of the Bible, revisit the passages about Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. Remember that He died for you specifically. It's your sins that put Him on that cross. Remembering your role in His death will draw you closer to Him.
