This week's Bible study is adapted from the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Bible Passages: Numbers 16:1—25:18

Discussion Questions:

How do God's promises to you provide comfort in your times of need?

At the start of a new year, how can you plan to regularly express your gratitude for God's unceasing care?

Food for Thought:

Throughout his life, Russell Kelso Carter wore many hats. He was an excellent student and star athlete at a military academy. He spent time as a teacher, coach and minister before completing medical school and finishing out his years as a doctor. In the midst of his career climb, he also was a musician and songwriter. He wrote words and music for several now-popular hymns but is best-known for another set of lyrics.

When he was 30, Carter developed an acute heart condition for which his doctors could offer no treatment. He turned to God for healing and promised that whether he was healed or not, he would be completely consecrated to working for the Lord. Though he'd already penned the lyrics to "Standing on the Promises," it was at this point in his life that the words to that song came alive for him. He began to stand upon the promises of healing despite how he felt or to what degree his health would deteriorate. Over the next several months, he experienced a complete healing of his heart condition and went on to live another 49 years.

"Standing on the promises of Christ my King,

Through eternal ages let his praises ring,

Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,

Standing on the promises of God.

"Standing, standing,

Standing on the promises of God my Savior;

Standing, standing,

I'm standing on the promises of God."
