Convention Speakers Rouse Crowd

Former GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson’s harsh critique of the media’s coverage of Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin’s vice presidential candidacy and attacks on Barack Obama earned resounding applause from Republican National Committee convention-goers Tuesday night.

“Some Washington pundits and media big shots are in a frenzy over the selection of a woman who has actually governed rather than just talked a good game on the Sunday talk shows and hit the Washington cocktail circuit,” Thompson charged.

As for Obama, the crowd cheered loudly when Thompson reminded them of what Obama said in a recent forum at Saddleback Church about abortion. “We need a President who doesn't think that the protection of the unborn or a newly born baby is above his pay grade,” Thompson said. “The man who will be that President is John McCain.”

McCain’s longtime Democratic friend Sen. Joe Lieberman made an appeal to his fellow Democrats and Independents at the convention. There, he said: “I want to speak directly to my fellow Democrats and Independents who are watching. I know many of you are angry and frustrated by our government and our politics and for good reason. You may be thinking of voting for John McCain but you’re not sure. Some of you have never voted for a Republican before and in an ordinary election, you probably wouldn’t. But this is no ordinary election, because these are not ordinary times, and John McCain is no ordinary candidate. You may not agree with John McCain on every issue. But you can always count on him to be straight with you about where he stands, and to stand for what he thinks is right regardless of politics.”

Other highlights of the night included a special address from President Bush via satellite from the Gulf, a moving tribute to Medal of Honor winners and a moment for the spouses of current POWS.
