We may have just witnessed the most extraordinary set of political events in the USA since the assassination of John F. Kennedy and LBJ taking the oath of office on Air Force One carrying the late president’s body.
It is always hard to come to solid conclusions when you are missing critical data points. Without detailed information as to Joe Biden’s physical and mental well-being and full details as to what transpired in Butler, Pennsylvania, one can only try to connect some dots to see where they lead. While there is far more video available of the attempted Trump assassination than the one Zapruder film of JFK’s murder, I am afraid that we will still be debating what happened in those Pennsylvania fields sixty years from now.
A brief timeline:
*Joe Biden challenges Donald Trump to two debates far earlier in the election cycle than ever before. Forgetting that Clint Eastwood is a card-carrying Republican, Biden tells Trump, “Go ahead: Make my day!” Trump agrees without altering any of the pro-Biden debate venues or rules.
*The first debate takes place in late June between the two men. Other than Jill Biden, the rest of the world concludes that Donald Trump won the debate hands-down. He was in control, he did not interrupt, and he spoke with authority. Joe Biden looked and sounded confused and short of reciting his aunt Erma’s chocolate cookie recipe, his answers seemed to be off the mark. Even the MSNBC crowd could not spin the debate in Biden’s favor and immediately demanded that he leave the race.
*The Democrats break into camps. Joe Biden insists that short of God telling him in his ear to leave the campaign, he is staying put. But Joe is not alone. The left side of the party says that they are going with Joe as do some political pundits. Notably, Barack Obama and the donors want Joe to bow out post-haste. The donations start to dry up with Joe still at the top of the ticket.

*There is an assassination attempt on the life of Donald Trump. While we do have access to some details regarding the Secret Service and local police makeup and their interactions and concerns regarding the shooter, there are still many details that we do not have and may never know. I wish that the Three Stooges had made a short film of three highly-trained snipers at different windows in a warehouse, while the live shooter is on the roof of the same building at the exact same time. If there was a credible threat concern ten minutes before Trump took the stage, why did they let him take the stage? If a counter-sniper saw the sniper a few minutes before the shooting began, why didn’t he take him out until after eight bullets had been fired and one person was dead?
*After golfing, Trump attended one of the best Republican National Conventions (RNC) in recent memory. There was energy, enthusiasm and a sense of unity not seen in ages. The convention ended with Donald Trump’s speech directed at the American people to join him and JD Vance to get America back on the right track.
*Joe Biden returns early from Las Vegas. His entry and exit via the short stairs on Air Force One make him look like he was just awoken from a deep freeze. While said to have a mild case of Covid, there were no signs of masks on the president or any effort to keep him away from his staff and security.
*Joe Biden disappears and then a letter is put out on X announcing his leaving the race for president. A few minutes later, he throws his support to Kamala Harris. The president is neither heard nor seen during this political earthquake. Many rally around Harris, but notably Barack Obama and certain other Democrats withhold any support or backing.
While Sherlock Holmes could solve a case with a few microscopic specks of tobacco on a windowsill or a small piece of red clay on one shoe, we are missing too much information to confidently connect all of the events above. The general view of the Secret Service is that they were negligent to the point that the shooter could come with a range-finder, ladder and even a drone and still get into a shooting position. I would imagine that there might be a another possibility. The government in the person of the Secret Service was not involved in trying to kill Trump, but they so reduced the quality of his protection, that if someone took out Trump under weak security, there would be no tears shed.
Trump turned his head and lived to tell the tale. The Democrats realized that Biden’s polling is a disaster not only for him but for the rest of the party down-ballot. The Covid story and Biden’s disappearing act while giving up his bid are still shrouded in mystery. But the Democrats also saw the RNC and came to the conclusion that the reinvigorated and more balanced Trump would mop the floor with Joe Biden. I have no idea if Joe Biden is incapacitated or held incommunicado against his will. He swore up and down that he would run, and there is nothing in the polling to suggest that Kamala stands a better chance than he did against Trump. Barack Obama understands that Harris is a lousy candidate and has committed war crimes against the English language. He is waiting for someone more like him. The top Democrats only understand power, and if cheating 14 million Biden primary voters is the price to stay in the White House, then so be it.
There are two mysteries in Washington: why was the Secret Service so ill-prepared for an easily-identifiable shooter and why was Biden’s dramatic announcements dumped to X and not delivered by the man himself in a live or even recorded broadcast? We have more questions than answers but something is definitely fishy in the goings-on for the past month.
