Nancy Pelosi Asks 'What's the Point' of Enforcing Immigration Law

At a townhall event on Monday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) asked her audience what the point was of President Trump enforcing immigration law.

"When I saw the president was going to have these raids, it's so appalling, it's outside the realm of civilized human behavior, just kicking down doors and splitting up families in addition to the injustices that are happening at the border," she remarked. "We have legislation to go forward to address those needs. But in terms of interior enforcement, what's the point?"

Pelosi decided not to continue with her question as she said the townhall was not a “political event.”

Pelosi's comments come after Trump announced last week that ICE would begin a massive raid removing illegal immigrants from various cities across the United States. Trump later tweeted that he postponed the directive after being asked by Democratic officials to do so, in order to give Congress a chance to work together to solve the issue.

The Speaker of the House has not been a fan of Trump’s policies on immigration. In January, she called Trump’s proposal for a border wall “immoral” amidst a month-long government shutdown.

Even with senior leadership opposing a border wall, some Democratic legislators favor heightening security through increasing "barriers" and "fences."

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL), Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) all support enhancing "barriers" at the southern border.
