Secretariat: Why He's One Of ESPN's Greatest Athletes Of All Time
I've never been into horse racing but this brought water to my eyes and my hands to my mouth.

Secretariat is the world's most famous horse, and arguably the greatest thoroughbred of all time. Here is the complete and unedited 1973 Belmont performance. Secretariat became the 9th Triple Crown winner on that day, shattered the 1 1/2 mile world record at 2:24, a record still stands today. He won the race by 31 lengths, another record that still stands.

ESPN listed Secretariat the 35th of the 100 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century, and in 2005, Secretariat appeared again in ESPN's Classic's show "Who's No. 1?." In the list of greatest sports performances by individual athletes, this horse was the ONLY non-human on the list, with his Belmont run ranking 2nd behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100 point game.

As the movie rolls out in a theater near you, enjoy this remarkable performance.

BTW: After Secretariat's death, the necropsy revealed that his heart was 22 pounds! Two and a half times the size of an average horse!

Note, too, that the jockey never uses the whip in the stretch!
