Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Britain's release of Abdel Baset al-Megrahi-- the Libyan terrorist whose bomb blew up a plane over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988, killing 270 people-- is galling enough in itself. But it is even more profoundly troubling as a sign of a larger mood that has been growing in the Western democracies in our time.

In ways large and small, domestically and internationally, the West is surrendering on the installment plan to Islamic extremists.

The late Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn put his finger on the problem when he said: "The timid civilized world has found nothing with which to oppose the onslaught of a sudden revival of barefaced barbarity, other than concessions and smiles."

Culture of Corruption by Michelle Malkin FREE

He wrote this long before Barack Obama became President of the United States. But this administration epitomizes the "concessions and smiles" approach to countries that are our implacable enemies.

Western Europe has gone down that path before us but we now seem to be trying to catch up.

Still, the release of a mass-murdering terrorist, who went home to a hero's welcome in Libya, shows that President Obama is not the only one who wants to move away from the idea of a "war on terror"-- as if that will stop the terrorists' war on us.

The ostensible reason for releasing al-Megrahi was compassion for a man terminally ill. It is ironic that this was said in Scotland, for exactly 250 years ago another Scotsman-- Adam Smith-- said, "Mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent."

That lesson seems to have been forgotten in America as well, where so many people seem to have been far more concerned about whether we have been nice enough to the mass-murdering terrorists in our custody than those critics have ever been about the innocent people beheaded or blown up by the terrorists themselves.

Tragically, those with this strange inversion of values include the Attorney General of the United States, Eric Holder. Although President Obama has said that he does not want to revisit the past, this is only the latest example of how his administration's actions are the direct opposite of his lofty words.

It is not just a question of looking backward. The decision to second-guess CIA agents who extracted information to save American lives is even worse when you look forward.

Years from now, long after Barack Obama is gone, CIA agents dealing with hardened terrorists will have to worry about whether what they do to get information out of them to save American lives will make these agents themselves liable to prosecution that can destroy their careers and ruin their lives.

This is not simply an injustice to those who have tried to keep this country safe, it is a danger recklessly imposed on future Americans whose safety cannot always be guaranteed by sweet and gentle measures against hardened murderers.

Those who are pushing for legal action against CIA agents may talk about "upholding the law" but they are doing no such thing. Neither the Constitution of the United States nor the Geneva Convention gives rights to terrorists who operate outside the law.

There was a time when everybody understood this. German soldiers who put on American military uniforms, in order to infiltrate American lines during the Battle of the Bulge were simply lined up against a wall and shot-- and nobody wrung their hands over it. Nor did the U.S. Army try to conceal what they had done. The executions were filmed and the film has been shown on the History Channel.

So many "rights" have been conjured up out of thin air that many people seem unaware that rights and obligations derive from explicit laws, not from politically correct pieties. If you don't meet the terms of the Geneva Convention, then the Geneva Convention doesn't protect you. If you are not an American citizen, then the rights guaranteed to American citizens do not apply to you.

That should be especially obvious if you are part of an international network bent on killing Americans. But bending over backward to be nice to our enemies is one of the many self-indulgences of those who engage in moral preening.

But getting other people killed so that you can feel puffed up about yourself is profoundly immoral. So is betraying the country you took an oath to protect.

Thank you
Another great piece. We need folks like you to teach the history that many never learn.

The Brilliance of Sowell
Thank you, Thomas, for your insight and wisdom. Like so many others who have commented positively on this column (and others): Thank God for Thomas Sowell. Please continue the good work.

God Bless You, Dr. Sowell
I just now read this column and it is praiseworthy (as usual; I am grateful for your consistency & steadfastness). I especially appreciated the quotes from Solzhenitsyn and Smith. I also heard you on the air with Walter Williams (filling in for Rush); I agreed with your comment regarding the 'insidiousness' of the Poser President speaking to our children (yes, dictators love getting hold of the kids). I just saw a video where schoolchildren were being led in a song praising him with language that sounded inappropriately like they were referring to God himself! I get great comfort, sir, from hearing you and reading you, that I am NOT THE ONLY ONE who fears this man nor am I the only one who is NOT 'drinkin' the Kool-aid' so to speak... I've never seen anything like this in my 56 years as this Personality Cult and Race Card usage and the insane are not those who recognize the dangers but those who are supremely DELUDED about him. It's truly disturbing. Have you ever read CAMP OF THE SAINTS by Jean Raspail? I feel we are living it now - skin color is irrelevant when we are joined together to fight a common enemy, sharing like ideology, values and principles (a commonality I trust we & others share). Raspail was prophetic... WE MUST WIN THIS BATTLE. Thank you for your continued encouragement via your spoken and written commentary.

Thomas Sowell- AMERICAN
love the last sentence!! This administration is creeping ever closer to treason. Can't wait for the future look "backward" investigation of all the guilty parties in this adminisration.

Sowell Brother...
Keep up the good work Tom. We need you.

A voice of sanity in a corrupt country
If only our government weren't so corrupt, we could have people like Thomas Sowell run for office AND WIN.

But, alas, a good person can hardly get elected. And now with the government subsidized ACORN going out and "registering" dead people, it's even harder to elect good, qualified people.

Terrorists within and without
Dr. Sowell , you hit the nail on the head AGAIN ! You're still batting a 1000 as usual . It seem that there are parties within our own government that seek to terrorize the good citizens of this country by the attitude toward our laws and constitution and our sworn enemies . The " make love not war " hippie retreads are going to get us all killed if we don't get them out of these government positions . Dr. Sowell you are truly a blessing to all of us that still know right from wrong . God speed to you sir and thank you again .

War Is A Matter Of Life And Death
Dr Sowell, It couldn't have been put any better.

The nation needs to recover a spine and realize that there is no such thing as a sterile war.

Our enemy will bury us or we will bury them. As long as they are determined to fight us, someone is going to die.

These people are not interested in reason. Extending the olive branch will only succeed in getting your hand cut off.

The only option to them is to let them rule over us, and that will be over my dead body.

Terrorists
Are not protected by the Geneva Conventions. It doesn't matter what we do to them.

GO AFTER ALL OR NONE!!!

Please consider writing about Bill Clinton and the terrorists he tortured? Or forward this idea to someone who you think could write an article in hopes of getting the TV media to discuss the issue. Help to neutralize AG Holder. Clinton ordered torture, the facts are online, even the PBS networks did an expose. Al Gore was there too. The age of the story is never too old to drum up again considering the damage they are doing to national security.

Bill Clinton sent the US Army into Somolia to take a hostage whom would have been tortured, Clinton did so without a declaration of war, very few in Congress knew about the hostage taking plans till the Army failed and a fire fight had consumed the operation named Black Hawk Down. Good soliders died that day while Clinton drug his feet only to finally approve a rescue plan to retract the men trapped in the city.........all died and were injured just to take a hostage to be tortured.

Why aren't republicans going after democrats? If were going to clean house, then lets get them all or move on because both parties are guilty of torture and that is a fact. Yet somehow Barack Obama and Eric Holder see no evil in the Clinton administration.

If I ran for and were elected president in 2012, I'd order investigations into Clinton and Gore, you'd think Eric Holder would too, but like Obama, both men are too busy attacking the wrong enemy!!!

Its time to air all the dirty laundry or neutralize the real problem in the AG's office and the Oval Office or lets get them all. Maybe the people should vote on how we finish this Orwellian venture???
Thank you.

Taft
"Facts are, our interrogators would rather use the methods used by our ancestors in WWII and I. Both groups have come out, in fact to denounce torture, and, your example is sort of lame, because the Nazi torture loving thugs, lost partly because of torture. Its just an evil thing, like murder, it really can't be analyzed or justified."

Upon what "facts" do you base this useless drivel upon?

Moreover, saying the Nazi’s lost “partly” because of torture is akin to saying the space shuttle takes off “partly” because of Tang.

You’re argument is ignorant, misguided…Ahhh, I’ll just say it: you’re a F’ing moron.

THE DEFENDERS
We are living in interesting times indeed.
*
Obama is clearly an ally of evil, but he is doing a necessary service for the cause of liberty and universal human rights.
*
Obama is crystallizing the stark difference between the forces of evil (like Islam & Socialism), and the forces of good (like freedom and personal responsibility).
*
The overwhelming moral superiority of freedom is not represented by the election of Obama, or the appointment of Eric Holder, but rather the coalition of brilliant defenders who have risen in opposition to his evil Socialist /Islamist agenda. They represent the true promise of freedom, human beings not defined by their race, sex, color, origin, or infirmity, but by their common humanity. I LOVE IT!!
*
THE DEFENDERS:
Thomas Sowell - Brilliant objectivist thinker; Black American
Geert Wilders - Courageous defender of liberty in Europe; Blonde haired blue eyed politician
Michelle Malkin - Tough and truthful freedom fighter; Asian American woman
Robert Spencer - Fearless exposer of the Islamist threat
David Horowitz - Tenacious fighter for academic freedom, proud left wing apostate
Charles Krauthammer - Brilliant analyst and thinker, wheelchair bound quadriplegic
Ayann Hirsi Ali - Vocal opponent of Islamo-Fascism, Islamic apostate and indestructible survivor of Islamist torture and oppression
*
There are many more DEFENDERS whom I have ommitted for the sake of brevity, but we know who they are.
*
The DEFENDERS fight with their intellect, armed only with a pen and an arsenal of truly righteous ideals. The Islamist / Socialist threat is frightening, but THE DEFENDERS give me hope!

Suicide of The West
Dr. Sowell is so right. It is remarkable that the progressives of the world are so eager to forget the past and please those they fear. One of the UK's greatest leaders said it well; and it was not 250 years ago. "One cannot appease aggressors if one values the lives of the innocent." If Mrs. Thatcher were in power today then this certainly would not have happened. We all may pay a terrible price for this sort appeasement. 9/11 will be considered miniscule in comparison if we don't change our attitudes.

Famous Quotes (cont)
"Government is not part of the solution; it's part of the problem." --Ronald Reagan (1980)

"The era of Big Government is over."
--Bill Clinton (1996)

"I'm gonna make Government cool again."
--Barack Obama (2008)

On Joe, from CA
There are so many errors and generalities and missing facts in your piece, it actually makes my head swim. Actually, it would take too much effort to respond, so I will just say this: Sowell is a great American and proves it with everything he writes. You, on the other hand, who are clearly NOT a great American, should go live in the Middle East with your likely pale face since you have mad love for them.

And regarding one point: non-uniformed combatants are not subject to the Geneva Convention laws nor do they get American rights. They could/should have been sent to the firing squad...is that the compassion that you prefer?

Why are right wingers so stupid?
Sowell, in what cases should we not torture people? Many of these people did absolute nothing, except exist at a certain place and time, but were tortured as if they were the key to all the ills the US faces.

it is a fact of life that when a countyy controls or wins a war, their war criminals are not prosectured. However, the losers war criminals are prosecuted (BTW, youer example of soldiers executing opposing spies is a false example - that is allowed by convention and is not a war crime). That is the situation now. the CIA clearly commited war crimes, even in the strictest sense. It is quite clear that those crimes added nothing significant to our knowledge of terrorism and actually caused more terrorism as a backlash. Therefore, it seems essential to reflect on whether torture is worth it. We get no useful information and it causes more death. Plus it is a crime. Why do it?

Good intentions are no excuse. Cheney was apparently full of good intentions when he promoted all the unconstitutional things he did, but he is obviously still a criminal for doing it. They were not needed then and did nothing for us. Simple good police work would have been sufficient. The problem is that right wingers usually panic and go to the ultimate extreme right away. To prevent that we need strong laws AND strong enforcement to keep right wingers in line. Otherwise, as we have seen, many innocent people will suffer needlessly, and multitudes of others will die. That is the sad outcome of right wing governance. We have to stop it. The only way is to prosecute the criminals to show by example that we will not tolerate them.

It is so sad you feel compelled to comment on this. It is obviouls, by all your writings that you don't understand economics and are even worse as a commentator on anything else. It wopuld be best if you just kept quiet and let those with some functioning brain cells do the talking.

History
As I listen to the rhetoric about Afghanistan and Iraq and how we have to worry about our own domestic situation, I hear the voices of history. Before World II America was in the middle of the Great Depression and felt that the World was not our problem. Politicians and governments watched the rise of Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin and did nothing. Hitler was able to conquer Austria without a fight. He marched into Czechoslovakia with the blessing of the British government. We knew these men were evil and yet we did nothing. Millions died and America stood mute. After all America had our own problems. Then suddenly Pearl Harbor was bombed and the world’s problems were also ours. I ask myself if America had been vigilant and stopped Hitler before he was our problem how many lives would have been spared? Would those at Pearl Harbor needed to die? North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are we being vigilant of the forces of evil? Do they once again have to attack American soil before we care? Have we learned nothing from American history? “When good men do nothing evil prevails.” Where is American vigilance?

Priorities are showing
This administration is clearly anti-American. They hold no respect for the United States Constitution or its law abiding citizens. Thank you for pointing out that terrorists have no legal standing or rights. I support our CIA agents and thank them for their determination to protect us. I fear leaving the country as I doubt that I will travel under the protection of the U. S. because they are clearly on the side of dictators, thugs, greed, marxists, and anti-American movements. Thank you so much for putting this in "black and white". No pun intended.

It's about time!
Perhaps others have done so (and I hope so), but Sowell is the first I recall someone clearly implying that these liberal pieties (like releasing terrorists and seeking to prosecute CIA personnel for daring to be harsh with terrorists prisoners) are produced by the need of some to find ways to feel morally superior. And, of course, feeling superior means feeling superior to others.

This explains so much of "liberalism." I have long contended that liberalism is not an ideology at all but rather a personality type. Another aspect of this personality type is the need to tell others what to do. Hey, if you're morally superior to others, then you have a right, nay, an obligation, to do so!

This aspect of personality explains why more Americans like Obama than like his ideas. It is because, to certain people, feelings are more important than ideas. Doesn't this explain liberalism?

Liberals and the Law
To all the libs out there who say the "law is the law" I as of you - do all the current violations of our precious Constitution mean anything to you?

Failure upon failure
To joltinjoe in Florida.
Well and accurately said sir. Hats off to you from jettr in Texas.

Re: A Winning Strategy
"imagined rights
Terrorists have the right to only one thing: a summary execution."

But only after being THROUGHLY DEBRIEFED!

Failure upon failure
President Obama has not succeeded on any helpful legislation nor foreigh policy initiative since becoming President. The bailouts are obvious failures. The Attorney General appointment is an obvious failure. We have not gained one iota in foreign policy advantage since the inauguration. Foreign policy whiz Joe Biden is so inept that Obama's choice of a VP is another abject failure. Appointing Hillary as our Secretary of State who is politically vying with Joe Biden for foreign policy influence is another example of the Madeline Albright diplomacy; Give the other side everything they want and get back stabbed in the process. I precidted that all Americans would be poorer within one year of the Obama presidency. He has beaten my worst estimates by 6 months. I did not contemplate how much worse off we would be in our security efforts but we certainly are not better off right now than we were 8 months ago. Obama has been a failure upon failure. The leadership of our country is a vacuous chasm. To you liberal thinkers, that means empty space. We need to fill that space as soon as we can. When you watch Pelosi and Reid comment on anything American it leaves you disheartened and a little frightened. They have arrived at the height of ignorance and the height of power at the same time. My goodness. Failures upon failures. Now you know.

imagined rights
Terrorists have the right to only one thing: a summary execution.

wow
georgann- you must be from Boulder. Do you make stuff up like Taft does, or do you hold seances and talk to your heros Lenin or Marx? And do they allow computer access at the mental hospital you live at, excuse me, "attend."

Seriously. When you actually try to refute what has been listed in a logical manner we'll respond. When all you do is attack you make your side look even nuttier, which seems to be a liberal trait.

I'm sure you or taft will attack me. Go ahead. Keep pretending to know something.

Just words...
But getting other people killed so that you can feel puffed up about yourself is profoundly immoral. So is betraying the country you took an oath to protect.

I do not think that anyone in the PBO administration takes any oath seriously. The words are just an end to a means. Their true loyalty is to an unspoken ideology. This does not bode well for our republic.

Orwell was a prophet!

Let's Squeeze The Koran.
Another brilliant article Dr. Sowell in highlighting the new Black Attorney General's decision to investigate our Intelligence Community.
This is, as you say and I'll reiterate suicide on the Islamic Extremist installment plan. Our Black President Barry thought it prudent to apologise for our supposed wayward ways abroad, all the while bowing and chucking and jiving with our enemies and now his idiot savant Eric is defying his own words to move on.
Osama Bin Laden is just yukking it up with his Al Qaida buddies watching (his) "the paper tiger" get weaker and weaker from within.
First we tie the hands of our soldier's by altering the rules of engagement and now we're doing the same to our Intelligence Communities.
If it were left up to me I'd be waterboading with Drano and flushing more Korans down toilets. I think we need a new national toilet paper and ad campaign. Instead of squeezing the Charmin let's sqeeze the Koran. Too bad we have to put up with 3 more years of these political gadabouts.

Georgann
"I want American Jews prosecuted for treason if they advocate for Israel as they pretend to be an American."

I see - you'd rather they advocated for Israel's destruction - the same enlightened view as the DC Fascists are taking.

Let me say this: The aggression has continually come from one side in the Mideast - the Muslim neighbors of Israel. Land for Peace has been tried. It is clear the Mullah's want nothing short of Israel's extermination.

The constant tension over recent years has restrengthened a nation, weakened by false hopes for peace. It realizes that brutal regimes like Iran seek nuclear weapons for one purpose: to use against Israel.

If they attack again, they better make it good because Israel will make it a brutal war of conquest - and will shove all the Palestinians back into the neighboring countries that would never accept them to begin with.

Some say Islam vs Judaism may be the last war - Fascism vs Freedom. That may very well be. It's not hard to imagine - both sides have powerful supporters.

It's clear you've picked your side.

Betrayal
I thought that "betraying the country you took an oath to protect" is called treason. I thought that there were significant legal penalties for treasonous behavior that is proven.

In Death, Kennedy Still Draws Boos
A palate cleanser via Progress Illinois, which is shocked, shocked to find that Ted Kennedy is still loathed by conservatives in death — quite in contrast to how George W. Bush would be treated if, say, a Republican congressman invoked his name posthumously while addressing a Democratic audience. Consider this further evidence, though, in case any was indeed that slapping the Ted Kennedy seal of approval on a government program isn’t much of a selling point to anyone to the right of MoveOn.org. Which is too bad for The One, really, considering how his own vaunted salesman skills have deserted him lately.

Fun fact about Jan Schakowsky, seen here stupidly invoking the hero of Chappaquiddick in defense of her cause before a crowd with right-wingers in it: To this day, no one has been as blunt about the public option serving as a trojan horse for single-payer as she has.

Alert the BILL TO KILL now

S773 will give OBAMA exclusive control over the INTERNET,
which will allow him the exclusive right to SHUT IT DOWN WITHOUT NOTICE, anytime,

(senate bill 773 moving through the senate at warp speed) (which is going to be passed in the middle of the night while we are watching OBAMA SCARE)

THIS unlimited power to ONLY OBAMA is worse than ::: sinister, evil, destructive, and nefarious.

He can control every aspect of our lives by shutting down the
internet, overnight, without warning, without any explanation: etc.

It would instantly shut down all communications, energy, water, food distribution, our bank accounts, etc.

we have to stop it as fast as we can:

which means: publish it everywhere on the internet sites daily

write every congressman you can

we want billboards, banners, signs, EVERYWHERE across the nation:

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OF OUR INTERNET

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OF OUR RADIO

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OF OUR GUNS

KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OF OUR KIDS
(like the marine told Congressman Baird in Washington)

SO: write the spineless RNC / GOP and light a fire under them to get on this and kill this bill.

pass it on and on:

Thank You Dr. Sowell!!
Your excellent mind is clear-thinking and sees the Islamists as they truly are. Our Muslim president has thrown in his lot with our enemy. They will continue to demand Shariah law and to use the guise of multiculturalism and freedom of religion to grow their presence here. I do not trust them in the least. Islamists and a free society cannot for long co-exist!! They are incompatible.

I have read books written by Muslims who quote their Imams almost gleefully and categorically saying that they will use our democratic republic against us. They see our Constitution as a useful noose for them to put around our necks. Many of us are gullible and believe their deception.

Do not underestimate a barbarian ideology that knows no decent and humane limits to what they will do to achieve their goal. They must wage war on the entire world and establish Islamic dominance over it.

Of all of the posters I read here, Retired Geek gets my Medal of Champions. He is one of my heroes who always adds real and valuable truth to every dialogue!! Thanks RG. You are the BEST!! And thanks to all of the other posters who love this country and want to see it survive- in accordance with what our founding fathers had in mind many years ago.

Notice that anyone who agrees with daft

is okay, but anyone who disagrees is a scumbag.

Interesting concept!

What daft doesn't seem to understand is that Dershowitz is NOT in the military, and can therefore say whatever he chooses.

Gen Petraeus, on the other hand, is still active military, and therefore NOT at liberty to say what he really thinks.

Something about the pesky old UCMJ.

But then, that's daft!

Taft-Love and ADDICTION?
Every day that I read Town Hall I see numerous posts from Taft and numerous people who give him the attention he wants. Don't any of you get It? You are reinforcing his behavior!! He is a sick and sad troll.

I went to the VA site that had his posts there. He was doing the exact same thing he does here. They told him to get lost!! It is absolutely disgusting that any thinking person wastes their time on trying to argue with him, answer him or convince him of anything,

Sheesh. If you can't "step over the elephant" then you must have a secret attachment to him. Just tell the truth--you are addicted to Taft!! But by being addicted to him, YOU ARE WASTING OUR TIME!!

What a complete and utter waste!!

Go back to huffpo Georgann
Serious conservatives like Sarah Palin and Hannity advocate for Isreal all the time And Georgann wants conservatives tried for treason?

Of course they always put American Interest first, as do I a fellow conservative. But we have allies in the world and areas of interest. Poland was once an Enemy but now a staunch ally. I am a supporter of Poland as long as Polish interests coincide with America's. Would that make me treasonous if I have an ancestor about 6 generations back from Poland?

And when Georgann comes out with the same tired liberal dogma the likes of taft use when she writes: The Islamist boogy men are NOT coming. they want us to stop underwriting the NAzis of Israel

Here is a little hint for her, They already were here, took a dump on NYC, killed 3000+, took another dump on DC killed a bunch more and some brave Americans stopped the 4th attack in PA but a bunch of Americans went down with it.

georgann, take yer little girl rants back to huffpo where you libs belong.

oh and if anyone wonders why I assume georgann is a female it is because no man could be that seriously lacking in a pair of balls. Even Conservative Females like Anne and St Denis have a bigger pair then cowards who would cave in and sell out a major ally to have peace in our times.

Re: Still Stuck on Stupid!
"Petraeus defended the ban on 'enhanced interrogation techniques,' saying it had taken away a tool used as a moral argument against the US on the international scene. He insisted that while 'there might be an exception' he felt that the Army Field Manual was 'generally sufficient' for interrogations'."

Hmmm! So he insisted that "there might be an exception" - I wonder just what the good General had in mind by "an exception" - the infamous "ticking bomb?" Or terrorists preparing to highjack airliners in Asia to be used as missiles to take-down the West Coast equivalent to the World Trade Center? Fortunately the CIA was tasked with the job of gather information to prevent another 9/11 event in the USA, and not the US Army. I wonder how General Petraeus feels about those military special operators that must pull the trigger and take no prisoners to complete their missions?
