Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Whoever called politics "the art of the possible" must have had a strange idea of what is possible or a strange idea of politics, where the impossible is one of the biggest vote-getters.

People can get the possible on their own. Politicians have to be able to offer the voters something that they cannot get on their own. The impossible fills that bill perfectly.

As a noted economist has pointed out, nothing "could prevent the California electorate from simultaneously demanding low electricity prices and no new generating plants while using ever increasing amounts of electricity."

You want the impossible? You got it. Politicians don't get elected by saying "No" to voters.

Of course Californians also got electricity blackouts and, in order to deal with the blackouts, a multi-billion dollar surplus in the state's treasury was turned into a multi-billion dollar deficit, followed by cutbacks in various other government programs, followed by calls for higher taxes.

You want the government to create more jobs for people when there is widespread unemployment? It's been done. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the government employed more young men in the Civilian Conservation Corps than there were in the Army. The money to pay for all this had to come from somewhere-- and that meant that there was less money left to employ other people in the private sector. While jobs created by the government may not have reduced total unemployment, these jobs increased votes for the administration, which is the real bottom line in politics.

Are you for "open space" laws forbidding building and also for "affordable housing"? Don't be discouraged by the fact that severe building restrictions have sent housing prices sky-rocketing in community after community.

It may be impossible to have "open space" laws and "affordable housing" at the same time, but what are politicians there for, except to figure out ways to give us the impossible?

Palo Alto, California, where housing prices nearly quadrupled in one decade after severe building restrictions were imposed, also pioneered in laws mandating that each builder agree to sell a certain percentage of any new housing "below market."

In other words, they combined "open space" laws with "affordable housing." Who says the impossible cannot be achieved?

Of course this system can work only where just a fraction of the new housing is sold "below market." Moreover, the market price of housing is raised so far above what it was by building restrictions that even "below market" prices for condominiums in Palo Alto can run to $300,000 or $400,000.

This is hardly "affordable housing" for people on modest incomes. Only 7 percent of Palo Alto's police, for example, live in Palo Alto-- probably older cops who bought their homes long ago.

But none of that matters politically. What matters is that people in Palo Alto can feel good about themselves, by being for both "open space" and "affordable housing." Happy voters are what get politicians re-elected.

The big political crusade today is for "affordable" medical care through the government. No one believes that government is just going to be more efficient, and thereby have lower costs that will be reflected in lower prices for medications and medical treatment.

It might seem as if adding the costs of government bureaucracies to the costs of medications and medical treatment would make it impossible for the total costs to go down. But again, the impossible is no problem in politics.

Many countries around the world already have government-run medical care. People who get sick in these countries usually wait much longer to get treatment, including months on waiting lists for surgery, often paying in pain or debilitation, rather than money.

High-tech medical devices like MRIs are also far less common in these countries than in the United States. With medical care as with anything else, you can always get poorer quality at a lower price, though that is no bargain, especially when you are sick.

What you may have in mind are lower prices with no reduction in quality. While that may be impossible, don't expect that fact to stop politicians from offering it, even if they can't deliver.

The Bureaucracy to end all Bureaucracies
Can there be anything more Orwellian than the government were going to get Jan 20? Yes, 1984 was off just one score and five and now Big Brother is here. All the phony scare tactics the lefties preached about Bush will be self-fulfilled prophecies under their saviour, BO. From truth, food and fuel squads to public project corps to government health allocation this will be the scariest two years in the history of the world. The once great transparent freedom beacon will be extinguished by the dim bureaucratic decadence and the anti-American, multi-cultural hordes that will descend on our nation.

Impossible
And many of the fool voters have fallen for the something for nothing that politicians have promised. They think that someone else besides themselves should pay for it.

Well Said, Dr. Sowell
but you used two things that politicians no longer recognize, truth and logic.
I believe they have fooled so many for so long they actually believe they are endowed with the powers they promise. They are drunk with power, ego and greed.
Now everyone, even those of us who see through the lies, are suffering with the useful idiots who helped to bring the country down.
I guess that makes some liberals happy, they have been describing our economy as it is now for several years.

Not a charity case
I dont need charity. I dont want the Governments help. If I can't get it on my own then maybe I don't need it. Work hard and follow the rules and you will succeed. What ever happened to these sentiments? Nowadays everyone seems to be walking around with their hands out looking for someone to take care of them. Dare I say "bail them out". What a pathetic bunch of ninnies, and fools really, that the Greastest Generation has raised. How did this happen? I wish I had the answer to this question. Oh well, I'll just keep working and sweating and paying my bills on time and try to ignore the circus around me.

Mr. Sowell is too nice
Okay, I'LL say it:THE VOTERS ARE STUPID

Sorry. Have to say that at least once a day since November,4 or risk having a nervous breakdown.

indyconantidim
It is barely possible that the economy here will tank so bad that the illegals will go home. See? Every cloud has a silver lining.

Babbling idiots... fools on parade
Just yesterday I heard a young man on the radio discussing how, if only Pres-elect Obama could withstand the pressure from Big Oil and Big Coal and Big Auto (and while he knows it will be hard, he is convinced Obama can stand up to them all!) If only he can stand up to them, why in 3 to 5 years we will no longer need fossil fuels! The sky will be bluer, the clouds whiter, the rain will smell sweeter...

My thought, just before I switched off the radio, was that I had just listened to a babbling idiot. He not only voted for - but he also believes in - the impossible... and all because a politician said he would do it.

And that is why it is frightening to imagine what our children and grandchildren are learning in school today...

Speaking of Bureaucrasy
Dr. McCoy had one of the best lines in Star Trek IV. "Bureaucrasy is the one constanst in an ever changing universe."

Power and Water
I moved to Palo Alto in 1968 and purchased property at Auburn Lake Trails because the Dept. of the Interior was building the Auburn Dam at the confluence of the three branches of the American River to produce the largest shoreline in the US and make available water and energy to continue the water needs for agriculture in the desert as well as the expanding population, plus convert the fallen snow of the Sierras into electrical energy necessay to that population. Auburn dam was first projected in the 1800s and had been developed to the point that the footngs had been poured. The wisdom of the ecologically irrational dominated and the project was trashed by creating hysteria over the possile rupture during earthquake. This ignored the simple truth that a dam existed a few miles downstream and Auburn was a metho of increasing storage and power utilization of the same snow melt. Once again pointing out that government is not the cure, but the cause and that is a direct provable relationship

When?
When will we wake up?
I "hope" the "change" will occur in 2010.

Remember, politicians are like diapers.
They must be changed often.

For the same reason.

Support the Fair Tax.

Free stuff!!
Americans have just made a deal with the devil...they have absolutely no idea what is coming. They just can’t wait for their FREE healthcare, FREE childcare, subsidized housing, mandated minimum wage increases, and a ton of other FREE bennies.

What they fail to realize is the government has nothing to 'give' them...the government produces nothing of value. The only thing any government can do is forcibly take resources from one individual or group and give it to another (or if you’re lucky, return a small portion to you).

I’ve spent more than 12 years living in Europe (America’s future). Europeans have more than 50% of their gross pay immediately confiscated through taxes, and then they pay a 19% VAT on almost everything they purchase...to include their phone, electricity, internet and gas bills. Not to mention paying $10-15 dollars for a gallon of gas.

....all for FREE government benefits.

Politicians and Psuedo Academics
Where did all of this "something for nothing" and great (impossible) ideas come from? Do you notice that people like Dr. Sowell are products of the college of Business. Engineers and doctors and scientists come from professional colleges within the universities as well. These people create, employee, solve complex problems and make life better for all. These graduates think rationally and logically and make decisions based on empirical data.

Most of these impossible ideas or radical far left thinking comes from the college of Liberal Arts graduates from such useless degrees as Sociology, Womens' Studies, Ethnic Studies, Political Science, Education etc... These people make decisions based on feelings and emotion and paint pretty pictures for the useful idiots they educate (aka indoctrinate) from kids on.

Makes one wonder why we continue to support this useless college within the universities we support with our tax dollars.

Icedog
Just thought I'd validate you. You are absolutely right on about where we are heading. I have been living in Europe now for 5.5 years (Active Duty Military) and can verify everything you just said. You also left out their unemployment rates are and have been in the double digits. They have negative population growth so they bring in immigrants who can't get jobs so they suck more money from the government in the form of welfare benefits and free healthcare.

The people are so used to getting taken care of by government they keep turning to them to solve the problems instead of themselves and it turns into a self-licking ice cream cone. The destructive cycle keeps keeps growing like a snowball rolling downhill.

Newton's Law

For every action...there is a re-action.

Someone gets........someone gives

There is no free lunch

I'm not sure what the folks who missed this were doing when these lessons were taught to 10 year olds

Impossible
Since economic principle seems to not penetrate the skulls of many educated folks, perhaps we should apply scientific examples.

As is the fact that no two masses can occupy the same space simultaniously............

It is not possible for an economy to function where everyone has a equal share

ADLoggy
I'd probably bet you've already read it, but if not, I highly recommend you read Mark Steyn's book, "America Alone"....it addresses the additional points you just made and is an outstanding read (although frightening).

Thanks Icedog
I'll definitely get the book and read it. Keep up the good fight and hope the New Year for you and your family is prosperous and filled with joy.

Loggy
Same back at you...and thanks for all you do, no mission would survive without loggies!

More wisdom
I enjoy reading Thomas Sowell’s articles. This guy has more wisdom then both houses of congress.

Clone Drt. Sowell
What a logical approach to understanding the profession of politics. Can we clone Dr. Sowell so his intellect can occupy the chairs of all teaching positions in our universities? Talk about the impossible!

Our problem is the professional politician. We even award degrees in Political Science. The solution is NEVER VOTE FOR AN INCUMBENT! Someday we may again have elected officials truly interested in the welfare of our nation, not the chosen few. In the meantime, NEVER VOTE FOR AN INCUMBENT!

And pass the FAIR TAX!

WHEN CHILDREN RULE
Everyday's a Holiday.
Make believe and dress-up.
Tea parties and ice cream.
I win, you lose.
Catch me if you can.
He did it!
I don't know.
I forgot.
It wasn't me.
The dog ate it.
Don't look at me.
Did too!
Did not!
Everyone else is doing it.
It's not fair!
Ask your Mother.
Ask your Father.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Grow up? Why then, me and my friends will make the rules.
And so it goes, the 'children' who will be in charge of our Country, playing games with monopoly money, will be making the 'rules' in their 'make believe' world, having never gradusted to the adulthood of 'reality'.

fishy
We've already got kids running our country.

60's brat's who obviously never got disciplined and consequently use all the phrases you have noted in your post.

Our only hope is the American people will wake up - like they seem to be doing in Louisiana - and vote in some adults. And we need the Lord to wake up Christians to stop going along with the world in so many ways and going back to being the salt and the light.

Thanksto you, Dr. Sowell
For all your great work in the columns and books. There are many of us out here who look forward to all the writing and wisdom you produce each week.

I hope you and your family have a blessed 2009.

J Howard
Have you really thought about the "never vote for incumbents" idea?

You do realize that would result in handing congress back to the democrats in 2012?

Dr. Sowell
As usual your logic is irrefutable.

Now the idiots on the hill
gave GMAC 7 billion to loan out to finance cars AND lowered the credit score requirements by about 100 points to clear out the inventory on car lots.

Is this not the same insanity that brought us the mortgage mess?

When they default on the car loans, it will start all over again.

If someone can't afford something that's tough, all we seem to do is lower the standards rather than insist that people attain those standards that made this country the greatest ever.

I am so sick of this I could scream.

Icedog
People dont have to go to Europe to see what you have described; they can step across the border and see it here in Kanukistan, which is crumbling like wet cardboard as the United States closes its branch offices and moves them back home.

My Lutheran church discovered the flaw in this plan when its East German pastor drove away the capitalists.

Socialists have no money. And they depend for their lives on capitalists never noticing that.

thank you Dr Sowell
it is nice to read the post so far. thanks to everyone and happy new year to all.

had to say this before the children awake and start bickering on here this morning

A prayer for 2009

Obama, don't just do something, stand there.

More examples
Of trying to have it both ways, enviros who will burn a hndred gallons of gas to protest "greedy oil companies" from drilling for any more oil. Try to tell them that they need to stop using the oil and the drilling will stop.
Then there are those who have forced timber companies out of the forests because "they don't pay enough", and are attempting to force ranchers off the leased grazing of federal land because "they don't pay enough". Guess what now that they are getting rid of the paying users, they are screaming to high heaven that they themselves have to pay anything at all. The purists are working to get the politicians to turn all of the land into wilderness to keep all but a few out and charge the working taxpayers for it so those elite enough to use "the wilderness" do not have to pay.

Democrats
promise the impossible. Republicans promise things that are possible and desperately need to be done--such as cut government spending, and protect our borders--and then break those promises once they're elected.

We the People are Benjamin Button
Devolving from adulthood to dependent childhood.
Gimme gimme gimme.

All funded by the real adults who believe in hard work and responsibiity.

The other Impossible thing: Having Liberals believe that lower taxes increase revenue. Facts be damned....higher taxes are the answer, they say....all touted as making the rich pay their 'fair share' when in reality they are paying a disproportionate amount in taxes...in effect being punished for productivity.

Class Envy....one of the seven deadly sins.

Dr. Sowell, Happy New Year!
Seawolf, I'm with you, I am about to blow a gasket with these maroons. I want to just shake them and yell "GROW UP!". They have gone from "useful idiots" to "menancing morons" no matter how "well educated" they are or how high their IQ is.

AudiR10, we can only hope that the destruction will not be total and they will wake up to the reality before it is too late. Then Kanuckistan can serve as a lesson to the US. Alas, "the One" may destroy us before we can react.

if only Dr Sowell and Dr Williams were
both Senators. Can you imagine having TWO economics professors in the US Senate. It might be enough to make Harry Reid and Dick Durbin cry!

As I said on Dr Williams column, all elected politicians should be required to take a crash course in economics under one of these professors!

Doug
Not all Republicans. You have you're McCains and NE rinos that cave regularly to the pmm (Proganda Media Machine) and dims to scare everyone about GOP proposals. No alternatives just scare. Hey it got them elected when they were in charge of the biggest meltdown in history.

Pistol
I doubt the economy will scare them when they work for peanust and can get shamnesty and welfare for a whole family of dim voters.

Yes
You far exceed your usual excellence today.

thanks Dr. Sowell
for the economic reality check. Most people simply cannot reconcile the differences between conflicting goals.

Case in point:

During the Hillarycare debate in 1993, I attended a meeting with the well-respected president of a major hospital here in Chicago. He was supportive of national healthcare, proposing the Canadian model. He was enthralled with the societal benefits of such a system.

Then in a moment I will always remember, he completely he acknowledged that rationing, quality care and long waits were endemic with such systems. Not only were Canadians crossing the border for better treatment, Canadian physicians were emigrating to the US too! Apparently nationalized healthcare works well when you do not need it.

And in a total abandonment of logic, he suggested that it was somehow unfair that the entire country of Canada had only six MRI machines (relatively new technology at the time), while the city of Chicago was home to eight! He saw no causality whatsoever between the dreams of utopia and its economic realities.

I fear for our country when educated people fall for impossible political promises.

indyconantidim
I know of only one Republican whose deeds match his words, and that's Ron Paul.

Democracy has an inherently Leftist bias
Is there something in Democracy itself that makes a Leftward tilt inevitable?

Consider the following:

* American principles of justice and fairness mandate the need for equality of opportunity, but not of outcomes,

* the concept of equity is predominant in Leftist rhetoric, leading to their entrenchment in positions that seek an equality of outcomes.

* in a democracy, leaders have to seek election (and re-election) by winning a majority of votes from the electorate.

* Since every vote counts equally in a democracy, human predilections such as class envy can play a role in voting patterns. Notice how those weaknesses align very nicely with the Leftist concept of equity.

* It may be easy to brand those moral lapses as un-American, but politicians in a democracy learn how exploit them by proposing redistributive economic policies.

The result: Leftist policies gain ascendancy in America, and with each passing generation we undermine our strength by adopting policies such as Welfare, Medicare, Public Education, Universal Health Care etc.

Unlike that of a Republic, the inherent nature of a democracy forces our leaders to pander to human weaknesses, leading to a Leftward tilt. So, if we expect a democracy to lean to the Right, we are banking on a level of intelligence in our electorate that can overcome this inherently leftward bias.

A 10 year plan to fix Healthcare
PHASE1 (1st five yrs)
* Medicare/Medicaid vouchers for the poor and elderly - yes, this perpetuates the status quo, but fairness dictates a short term 'amnesty'
* cease Medicare 'deduction' and employer match
* return the previously extorted Medicare funds (with interest) into the Health Savings Accounts of individuals
* continue tax deductibility of Health Savings Accounts - employers may choose to contribute into the Health Savings Accounts of their employees
* fee for service begins to eliminate the need for insurance companies EXCEPT for catastrophic coverage
* costs start to come down (supply-and-demand at work)

PHASE2 (next five yrs)
* Healthcare vouchers ONLY for the poor and/or for those who are above a certain 'cut-off' age
* tax relief for everyone else
* end tax deductibility of Health Savings Accounts

PHASE3 (the future)
* no more Medicare, Medicaid etc.
* the poor are helped by voluntary, private charity
* Return to fee-for-service
* Health insurance is relegated to its rightful status - as a hedge against catastrophic illness

Opponents will charge that it is too cold & heartless. Inevitably there will be some who can't afford medical care, requiring private charity to intercede on their behalf. In reality, the lower costs would ensure that there would be a decrease in the number of people who can't afford medical care.

Actually our healthcare system is less screwed up than our education system! At least Govt does not (with some exceptions) own and operate most of the hospitals. So, the above solution is easier than my proposal for fixing K-12 education

The above solutions do not 'feel good', but they will work.

The Art of the Impossible
Good one Dr. Sowell!

B.O.'s "yes, we can" slogan repeated a trillion times and my favorite on the derisive laugh scale, "I promise to deliver" will come back to haunt him, sooner rather than later. And the liberal dupes bought it!

Thank you, Dr. Sowell
for an excellent article aimed at reality. Come January 20th, we'll see the fruits of the easily suckered.

If Americans don't learn to stand up and do things under their own steam and conviction, we'll all be like California which is the one state where, I can honestly and vehemently say, I would never want to live. It's La La land from top to bottom. San Fransisco, althouggh beautiful, needs a colonic flush.

voice of reason's health care plan
...will never happen.

Politics as "the art of the possible" is not what you think.

Politicians call it this because it's shorthand for "the art of what it's possible to say to get a majority of votes year after year."

The second concept has exactly nothing to do with the first--but it's the only "possible" whose "art" matters to a politician.

And that is why your healthcare plan, my dear V.O.R., will never, ever see the light of day.

Sorry to rain on your parade.

Currently, I'm the 45th.
Not a single posting preceeding mine that trys defending the "impossible." Could it be that even the lib-tards, when confronted with the absolute truth of phony promises and failed policies have no snappy rejoinder. No smarmy sanctification for their miserably dis-functional and discredited positions? I'm shocked! Truly I'd hoped for some justification for a continuation of an "Atlas Shrugged" type society from the libs. I'm blue.

Incredulous
Give it time. Some nitwit is bound to show up and tell us that what Dr. Sowell wrote is bunk.
I have great faith in the stupidity of people.

Dr. Sowell Keep Shining Your Light!

Great article as usual!

Happy New Year and may God Bless You with a long and healthy life.

Voice of Reason - Healthcare
Anything resembling a "phased approach" is doomed to failure as politicians elected during the more painful periods will rush to soothe the pain with redistributionist theft.

The solution.

End Entitlement spending NOW. Cold turkey is the best solution.

My father recently died. If my neighbors & fellow citizens would get their dirty, greedy hands out of my pockets, I could afford to take care of my mother. THAT's who I care about. Not your mother, not his mother...but MY mother.

Conservative Mantra
We the willing, led by the unknowing have done so much with so little for the ungrateful so long that we now feel qualified to accomplish the impossible with absolutely nothing.

Government spending
In the Alice In Wonderland world of politicians, the more you spend, the more you get next year, and the more wisely you handle the taxpayers' money, the less you get next year. This holds true, no matter how much you will need next year.
Here's proof: A friend of mine used to work for the N.Y.C. Housing Authority as a Heating Plant Techician. He got the boilers running very efficiently, and near the end of the heating season, they found that they saved many gallons of oil. Guess what they told him to do-
BURN IT!!!!! (Yes-you read that correctly!)
He had to waste all the fuel he had saved-because their allocation for the following year would have been CUT by the amount saved, no matter how cold the following year would have been.
This is but one example of the atrocities committed against We, The People- I'm sure that there are a lot more!

"Never vote for an incumbent"
Look at this statement from this point. The only time that you truly vote FOR someone is in the primary elections. These are a great deal more important than the general election. The primaries are where important differences between candidates and the direction of the party are determined. People really do not vote for a person in the general election. They vote for an ideology. This means that someone voting for a Democrat in one office negates their vote by voting for a Republican in another.
So, in this regards, never vote for an incumbent in the primary election, but always vote for your preferred ideology in the general election. But remember this, some ideologies wish to eliminate your ability to choose one in the future.

Excellent Article!
Thomas Sowell has absolutely hit a homerun with this one! He is truly gifted at getting to the heart of the matter, and doing so quickly. Politicians promise the sky and the moon and have no real way of delivering anything. We've just elected someone who has accomplished little in his life other than being a professional bureaucrat; yet, the masses expect miracles from this man. There is no evidence that he could effectively run a Target store let alone the country, yet we have fallen for the impossible dream.

Thomas Sowell is an idiot
Hey, Thomas Sowell, how is that the United States ranks about 35 th in health care and yet we pay nearly twice as much per capita as any other country?

Could it be that it's not impossible to have better health care at a lower price?

And there is a way to have affordable housing and open-space laws. You can do it by building apartment building where there were once houses. And if the community decides it's a value to have affordable housing they can subsidize it. There is affordable housing in Aspen for workers.

I think Mr. Sowell is having trouble separating theory from real life.

Phylo out.

Thanks Dr. Sowell
Great article. I especially liked the part about how when businesses are taxed to fund some inane, ineffective social program, there is no way of knowing what far more productive venture through the inventive private sector was lost. How ironic to think the tax and spenders who claim to want energy independence without drilling, through confiscatory taxes, are likely depriving entrepreneurs of the capital they needed to fund a viable clean energy solution, as well as other inventions that only need sufficient capital to flesh out their imaginations.

How hard is it to understand the concept that the government can't create anything without confiscating the wealth of others?

Yo Phylo
It's clear you don't live in the reality that we in the Peoples Republic of California do. Dr. Sowell's point IS real life here and we've seen it replayed over and over again here. The influx of people that have moved to CA (it's reversing now with the exception of illegals, along with the "NIMBY" and "we four and no more" attitude have caused real estate prices to soar in desirable areas. It's no more complicated than the principle of supply and demand coupled with govt. restrictions that have largely caused high real estate prices.

I have rarely seen arrogance like yours in calling someone who has the peer recognition of Dr. Sowell an "idiot". Exactly how many awards have you won by your brilliant observations that qualify you to pass judgement on his intellect, much less his time proven principles?
Most thoughtful people who disagree with someone like Dr. Sowell would examine their own premises to see if they were missing something, before they put their foot in their mouth. From what I've seen from your logic, you seriously need a course in basic econ before you trivialize the ideas of someone who has written scores of books on the subject.

Barack 'Sociopath' Obama

2) Grandiose Self-Worth. (he is the one the world is waiting for)

3) Pathological Lying. (lied repeatedly about BAIPA)

4) Conning and Manipulative. (tells voters what they want to hear)

5) Lack of Remorse or Guilt. (uses whatever is politically expedient)

6) Callous and Lack of Empathy. (doesn't care about others pain and suffering)

7) Lifestyle of a Parasite. (very little work or jobs)

8) Irresponsible in Relationships. (chose mostly radicals and communists)

9) Failure to accept responsibility of his own actions. (didn't know about his alliances backgrounds)

You are the idiot. Why should the government subsidize housing? We have seen what subsidize apartments have done in cities that are filled with crime and drugs.

Obama's Good Housing?

By Binyamin Appelbaum
Globe Staff / June 27, 2008
CHICAGO - "The squat brick buildings of Grove Parc Plaza, in a dense neighborhood that Barack Obama represented for eight years as a state senator, hold 504 apartments subsidized by the federal government for people who can't afford to live anywhere else.

But it's not safe to live here.

About 99 of the units are vacant, many rendered uninhabitable by unfixed problems, such as collapsed roofs and fire damage. Mice scamper through the halls. Battered mailboxes hang open. Sewage backs up into kitchen sinks. In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale - a score so bad the buildings now face demolition.

Grove Parc has become a symbol for some in Chicago of the broader failures of giving public subsidies to private companies to build and manage affordable housing - an approach strongly backed by Obama as the best replacement for public housing.

This is Obama's 'Hope and Change' in affordable housing.

To Phylo
The only meaningful part of your post was "Phylo out". You should have started with that one.

Retired Geek...
I enjoy reading you common sense and your O post.

I agree O is dangerous, he is also not the joyful, happy uniter he claims to be...

No one picked up on this, but I very much remember O was speaking in WI in early Oct about the Freddie/Fannie situation. In front of a live crowd, he tripped up his words and mistakingly said something to the effect of "Fannie Mac" or "Freddie Mae", totally an honest trip up in which I have also done during that time, it's a tongue twister. But, you can hear a few people giggling at him in the front rows. This did NOT sit well with the O. He flinched his head, as if he could not believe someone was laughing at him, looked sternly at those who dared giggle at the messiah, and said, "That's what I said!"

He takes himself far too seriously. Without revealing what I do for a living, let's just say I study human behavior on a daily basis, and I'm lied to every day on my job, and I know a sociopath when I see one. O is one.

Just wait until he is hammered with tough questions.

Even the possible is becoming impossible
The federal government's on-book debt is 180% of GDP. Soon they will no longer be able to borrow the money to fund the possible -- much less the impossible.

Mike et al

Thanks!

Usually I just get hate mail, death threats and insults.

I am a amateur human behavior observer - when I worked in software development I observed all types and kept notes as a hobby.

I learned this "Most humans do not know what they want - they only know what they don't want".

It seems that expectations are rarely matched to reality.

Obama worshipers are in for a big surprise!

Dr. Sowell nails it again
Dr. Sowell does it again.

He shines the glaring light of truth on liberal lunacy. Although I was born and raised a "bleeding heart" leftist, nowadays I just can't wrap my mind around their twisted "logic."

v.o.r.
i like your take on getting rid of entitlements. do you have any thoughts on the Fairtax? Now i am against any new tax, but the elimination of withholding and all corporate tax seems particularly powerful to me.

Best regards and happy new year!

Mike of 12:39
No gift for character analysis is required to pigeon hole Obama or 99 per cent of career politicians. They are totally out for number one. They are narcissists, seeking self agrandizement. They will say or do anything to move towards their goal of power and wealth and prestige. They can be jolly and charismatic, but as you note, they can not handle ridicule or being the butt of someone else's amusement. The Obama fans are taking great delight in advising the conservatives here to face it. You lost. We win. Our boy is in. I expect inside a year to taunt them with Face it. That's the One you wanted in the WH. How do you like him now?

Relevant Quotes from the past
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.
-Alexander Fraser Tytler (1747–1813)

"There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our overthrow. Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter: From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence. I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men and become the instruments of their own undoing." - Daniel Webster

Excellent as usual--
Dr. Sowell is great as usual, and if only the majority of citizens could learn from him.
As for most politicians, I can say two things possibly good about them: they are biodegradable, and they would probably make excellent speed bumps.

Living in California
I can tell you Dr. Sowell went soft on the liberals here. It is actually worse than he portrays.

It has already started on Obama

Time Magazine Declares Obama a Bigot
====================================

"...Obama has proved himself repeatedly to be a very tolerant, very rational-sounding sort of bigot.

He is far too careful and measured a man to say anything about body parts fitting together or marriage being reserved for the nonpedophilic, but all the same, he opposes equality for gay people when it comes to the basic recognition of their relationships..."

Houses and Health Care

Houses, like everything, depend on supply and demand.

In 1955 I bought a 4 bedroom house for $16,500 (in Encino), my income from a great job (RAND Corp.), was $6,000 a year. Using one of the Cost of Living formulas, that wage would now be $50,000, and the house would cost $127,000.

But 5 years ago that very same house, now in much need of repairs, sold for $600,000.

The wages went up 8+ times, the house went up 36+ times, only because the traitor enviornuts were able to keep the supply of homes too low.

But what I can’t understand, if the cost of wood, cement, wallpaper, toilets, and the manpower to build the house has just gone up by the amount of inflation, why are new houses so expensive?

I know they are not making any new land, but rather than spend billions on new freeways and public facilities, use that as seed money to build new cities in the open space.

But first you must eliminate all enviornuts.
===========

The way to reduce Health Care costs is simple. Just eliminate all insurance companies, their buildings, computers, and employees, and get rid of all Government health care employees. That would also eliminate the people in each and every doctor’s office and hospital, who spend their day filling out insurance forms.

I understand that there is a list of the procedures and the cost of each, for various parts of the Country.

Give every qualified doctor, hospital, and pharmacy a blank checkbook so they could write a check each evening for all the services they had provided that day.

That is page one of a 5,000 page Government document.

Yep, Retired Geek
"...Obama worshipers are in for a big surprise!"

Oh boy, are these obamabots EVER in for a BIG and NASTY surprise!

Or as Gov. Palin says: "YOU BETCHA!"

Great posts today. I've said this before, but it's SO refreshing to "chat" amongst like-minded sane Americans.

Happy New Year Everyone and pray "God Save America!"

Sad
It's sad that possibly only we will read this editorial. It's like singing to the choir.
I'm a child of the '60s and I can remember saying that we could and would change the world and that we did.
Unfortunately the changes that we brought have had large consequences. Thankfull I was able to survive the Left-Wing Liberal, free love and nichol beer indoctrination with little affect.
Now I prayerfully hope that I can survive the evils that the '60s bunch have brought on us.
Remember that song "Eave of Destruction"?
We're almost there.

What a little reading will do....
I recently reread some books on Joe Kennedy and his decendents. The thought occured to me that the reason so many people are still silly enough to believe in the Democrat largese is that the "machine politics" of the Irish pols or the Chicago pols for that matter is still a viable fantasy for many people. It isn't that they really trust these politicans but they don't trust the center right politicans even less. Their belief is really the same as the irish immigrants of Joe Kennedy's father's day. Vote for me and I will steal from the haves to make sure you get a job and a chance at a better life. The center right/Republicans are rightly or wrongly percieved of great free market theoriticans but that don't feed you when you have no job. The people who have no job or are constantly close enough to that reality really have little choice but to hope and vote for these clowns who will promise them anything to get elected. I don't know how we deal with that since the last thirty years has so corrupted our govenment, our regulators, our culture and our schools that little hope seems to remain to reverse the process. But, the first step toward finding our way out of this socialist mess is to realize that the "nuts" who voted for the Massiah are not crazy, they just don't have enough confidence or experience to believe in themselves. Why would they their entire lives they have been told they are the victims and some one else is to blame.

The Voters
A few weeks ago I watch a video about "Why Obama was elected." In the video of 6 voters who stated that they had voted for Obama, a series of questions about canidate positions were asked. The attributed 99% of the Obama positions to McCain and most of McCain's positions to Obama. Even the most egregous statement, "I can see Russia from my house" made by an actor on "Saturday Night Live" was attributed to Sarah Palin. The Voter are not STUPID, they are IGNORANT. The get their news from Comedy Central. With this lack of general knowledge how can the NOT believe the politicians. I dispare for my country.

Phylo you are Ignorant, get Educated!
Phylo,
Read Dr Sowell's books, "Basic Economics" and "Advance Economics" carefully. Read Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations." Or just subscribe to the Foundation for Economic educations "FEE in brief" newsletter. The "quick" education you will receive will take 2 weeks to 6 months depending on your reading speed. Then explain to all of us poor "ignorant" conservatives just how you can over come TANSTAAFL (There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.) Everything cost, whether is is wealth, labor or freedom, you must pay for it some how.

They get their news from Comedy Central.
I used to think that the fact that many people do get their news from Comeday Central was a travesty. But think about it. It is funny, well produced, entertaining and not a complete lie. Now you can't say any of that about the main stream media of NBC,CNN,CBS or ABC. They are so ridiculously biased it almost hurts to watch them. SO unless everyone becomes a Fox News junky where else are they going to get any news. Even PBS has succomb to a constant liberal drip, that is particularly gauling since the tax payers are paying for it directly.Jon Stuart, may not be my idea of a perfect source of news, but he is a hell of alot smarter and better at communication than the talking heads on the major networks. Oddly enough he is just as biased, but at least you can expect that from a comedy show. The crap that passes for journalism on the Main Stream Media outlets is painful to watch for the hypocrisy if nothing else.

Final Wisdom Comments for 2008
Wisdom of the Month

Life is a Tragedy and unhappy for those Liberals that only " feel" and a comedy for those Conservatives who Think and are very happy .
Liberals have spent their lives looking for that which was wrong with America while Conservative looked for what was indeed right about America and fixed our Wrongs though Individualism not thought Goverement hand outs .
Ronald Reagan

"No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffusd and virtue is preservd. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauchd in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders."

--Samuel Adams

Thank you - Dr. Sowell
Articulate and clear. Thanks for another great collumn. It's so simple, just take a look back. FDR had the reverse-midas touch perfected...

Fair Tax
i hope everyone reading this post knws about the Fair Tax (HR 25). If you're not familiar with it, please check out the web site fairtax.org. Also, read the Fair Tax books. They're chock full of great info to use in discussions with others.

If you DO know about the fair tax, talk about it with any and evryone you meet. The more people who know about it, the better.

The greatst weapon we have to help enact the fair tax is grassroots support. Once enough people learn how they are being manipulated by the feds, the tide will turn in our (the people, not the politicians) favor.

Happy New year fom Scrap Iron

Lolo1
California is such a beautiful state but so deadly in terms of trying to live reasonably there. It reminds me of Hemlock which comes from a beautiful flower, but when you drink it, you die.

happy new year
Universal health care will be a reality during the Obama administration for sure. The first year will be dedicated to solving the financial mess, and unemployment. Somewhere down the road it will be a reality. Having been in the insurance industry all my life I will say that if it is run by the Government, we are in big trouble. They will have to have private insurers get involved to underwrite and administer the plan properly. No easy task. My personal opinion, is we will have healt care rationed.

MRIs are also far less common

Dr. Sowell says,

High-tech medical devices like MRIs are also far less common in these countries than in the United States.

And I say,

One year, maybe 15 years ago, when friends visited from Toronto, Canada, (we lived near Palm Springs at that time), they mentioned that there were three MRI systems in all Toronto, with a long waiting list of patients.

As we stood at the corner of Monterey and Fred Waring Drive, we could see three offices with MRI systems, and was just three of several for a few hundred thousand people in the Coachella Valley, not three systems for the millions of people in Toronto.

Dr. Sowell writes: "No one believes that

government is just going to be more efficient, and thereby have lower costs that will be reflected in lower prices for medications and medical treatment."

Apparently the intellectually limited liberals believe it........

But then, it's obvious the left also believes in the tooth fairy! Go figure!

Have fun with Dr. Sowells article
For some reason as I read this article, I couldn't help but read it in the voice of that obnoxious TV gadget salesman, "but wait there's more." If you read this article with that voice in mind, it lends greatly to the point that Dr. Sowell is making and, well, it was fun.

Another question.......
How long will GWB stand as the last POTUS elected by gainfully employed adults.

Crotalus asks another question
I truly believe that question has already been answered Nov 4 Last!! My Father was the only person I ever knew who had actually served in the CCC for any extended period of time..I believe he said he was paid $5 a month and $24 was sent back to his parents..Now if that is the type "Make Job" Mr OB has in mind, and I suspect it may be, LOOK OUT!!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

The possible in health care
Thomas, you are mistaken about health care. It is possible to get it and save money. To do it we must get rid of the health insurance industry, which adds nothing of value and causes much bureaucratic excess, siphoning off about a third of the money we spend. Look at the Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) website.

Make no mistake, we ration health care in the US in a far more cruel, unfair, and inhumane way than in any other country. Those that cannot pay are rationed out. No other advanced country treats its citizens this way.

We make some people wait months for PRIMARY care. Read about the Remote Area Medical project, which goes into certain parts of America to see people with no other care who wait a solid day, with hundreds being turned away, to see volunteer doctors and dentists in a temporarily set up tent city which happens once a year if they are lucky.

We have TOO MUCH technology such as MRIs. This is the fault of our competitive system. When a hospital gets a piece of fancy new equipment, all the others in that city must have it. Then we pay big time for this unneeded capital expense, and this does nothing to improve our outcomes, which are the worst in the civilized world.

Pistol
The absolute last thing a liberal will do, like a maladpated adolescent, is take responsibility for their actions. Dubya, with his last socialist bailout act, will provide the left with years of blame as they experiment with their fantasy social engineering plans. George will be that gift that will keep on giving.

You're absolutely right about the empty suit about to take office in the White House. He'll be a miserable failure while causing a great deal of damage to the country.

Remember, to openly admit mistakes is a mark of strong character. That leaves a number of Repubicans out, and all liberals.

The Pro From Dover
I grumpily concede you are right that the people who put Obama in will go to great lengths to deny they voted for him. Or else they will (as you state) say things like "But i didn't know he would (fill in blank with some form of idiocy)". Nevertheless, there are some few on the left who do concede when some pet project goes awry. I had several Catholic friends who were gleeful when JFK got elected, who were no fans of his by 62. I have a couple black friends who sincerely believe Obama is free of taint from the sewage level politics from which he emerged. They can rationalize and "explain" the "nuances" of Wright's famous GDA remark. But they detest Sharpton and Jackson as perverters of the MLK dream. I would not be surprised if Obama alienates folks like these. At any rate, i love to say i told you so, so i will probably say it often to trolls, if my vision turns out to be accurate. There would be no reason to rub it in with my friends. They would be embarrassed enough already.

Pistol & Dover
The great thing about Sowell is he writes great articles regularly, in plain English and with great sense.

The great thing about the posts here is they are FARRRRRR more intelligent than the utter drivel seen elsewhere, and generally without the absurd anti-social behavior ... great job all ... and thank GOD it is now 2009, lets MAKE it better than 2008 (shouldn't be TOO hard).

The immorality behind the impracticality
But liberals will argue that this is a moral issue, and how can you be so heartless as to deny medical coverage to people in need? Therefore, they say, all your economic analyses are irrelevant.

In essence, the liberals are demanding the redistribution of wealth through the health care system.

As I have stated elsewhere, there is no such thing as a right to steal. Stealing is wrong, and it is completely irrelevant whether you intend to redistribute the loot to the needy. There is no such thing as a right to steal, period.

Bankruptcy is not death. Bankruptcy will not kill you. It is the morality of a parasite that demands that people who have taken appropriate health and financial precautions be forced to pay for those who have not, so that the latter do not have to live with the frugality demanded of their situation. The bleeding hearts cannot abide the "injustice" of the bankrupt having to discontinue their purchases of tons of bric-a-brac for dozens of friends and relatives for Christmas.

Now private charity and the free market could solve this problem anyway. But this not what the liberals want. Liberals want coverage to be socialized so that its recipients do not have to face the fact that they are living on handouts. At its root, the demand for health care is an attempt to shore up the self-esteem of parasites.

So when liberals say that socialized medicine is a moral issue, you as a conservative can say, "You got that right, bloodsucker!"

Days Before the Coming
I was watching some of the old movies on TCM. Back in the 20's some of the movies showed comfortable avarice. Some showed poverty and how people themselves dealt with their condition. Their situation.
In the 30's fewer movies showed the comfortalbe avarice but avoided overt poverty. Remembering that entertainment was key to popularity. The movies of the 40's and 50's began to show some of the diverse struggles and suprising triumphs of the American population. None of the movies showed any overt success of Government involvement in the lives of the electorate.
Today we are swamped with tragedies. Few are not without some plea for the Government to be 'compassionate'. The Coming of The Obama is near. And his horrible hoard of Impossible Politians.

The art of the impossible
Thank you Mr.Sowell for your clarity of thought.
How long will it take before those who are takers of the "free" realize there is no such thing? We will probably never know since this experiment has been going on since 1964. There are those with legitimate needs but there are also those who want the free ride, but as soon as a conservative raise the issue they are derided as being hateful and uncaring. As we move further into the Obama mania, taxes on coal, gasoline and other global warming products(what a joke) they will be hit with what I refer as the "cruelty tax". These taxes will most assuredly hurt the lower income citizens, but we must save the planet and change our lifestyles to match the rest of the world. How dare we be better off than someone else!

parasites feed off government
Wherever there is money, especially money that can be influenced by political means, there is bound to be an abundance of parasites. Public funded = low or zero accountability. People who are not bound by their consciences are free to work every vulnerability.

Possible Vs. Probable
Hi Tom:

Great article. By definition anything is possible. It would seem to me that the next part of the story is to ask: is it probable? I also either heard you say or read that people need to look at the consequences of their actions. Is is possible that a politician can have the public good in mind when they pass laws? The answer is:yes. The next question, is: is it probable that they are passing laws in order to help their constituents? Based on recent history (see definition of pork), it's not very "probable".

The Impossible
Re: "...the impossible is no problem in politics."

While they are at it, could the politician kindly create some matter and reverse entropy? Sure would be nice for them to make us some free gasoline out of nothing.

In 4 years
There will only be 2 types of LibTards, the ones who will still blame bush for everything that went wrong in this 4 years and those who will deny voting for O'Blame-us
