Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Wall Street titan Bernard Madoff proved you can take an outstanding reputation and ruin it overnight. Now Roland Burris has demonstrated that even a mediocre reputation can be instantly destroyed.

Burris is the prototypical time-serving career politician who owes his success to being simultaneously ambitious and bland. He has never been one to challenge the status quo, but no one underestimates his self-esteem. The two Burris children, after all, are named Roland and Rolanda.

The result of his immodesty has been a persistent hunger for offices that most people thought beyond his abilities. He has lost races for mayor of Chicago, U.S. senator, and governor of Illinois (three times).

Burris chief claim to fame until this week was his 12-year term as state comptroller, a job whose significance can be measured by the fact that few Illinoisans could identify the current occupant (Dan Hynes). Even among accountants, Burris left few strong impressions, but he also never gave any prosecutor grounds to indict him, which is not something Illinois voters take for granted.

When the news broke that Gov. Rod Blagojevich was trying to auction off Barack Obamas Senate seat, Burris called his behavior "appalling." After the governor appointed him to fill the vacancy, though, the onetime comptroller-for-life lost interest in the scandal. "I have no comment on what the governors circumstance is," he demurred.

But logic has never been his strong suit. A longtime advocate of a national handgun ban, Burris organized Chicagos first Gun Turn-in Day in 1993. But when he ran for governor the following year, he admitted that he owned a handgun ("for protection,") and did not hand it over to police as he urged others to do.

"He had simply forgotten about it," his spokesman said at the time -- a claim that, if believable, suggested Burris was not exactly the model for conscientious gun ownership. "Honey, didnt I used to have a pistol around here? Any idea where it might be?"

But now he finds himself chosen for a body where his ego would be among equals. Burris attested Tuesday that he is "the most qualified person in the state of Illinois." Besides that disinterested testament, he was hailed as "a good and honest man" by a benefactor who faces not only indictment but impeachment.

U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, a fellow African-American, couldnt resist a racial appeal, urging Blagojevichs critics "to not hang or lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointer." The governor rewarded the effort by saying, "That was excellent, Bobby," which may not stand as the former Black Panthers proudest moment. The overall effect was to confirm that Roland Burris is to racism what Harriet Miers was to sexism -- not a victim.

Blagojevich insisted he had the obligation to make an appointment, rather than "deprive the people of Illinois of their appropriate voice and votes in the United States Senate." A lot of his constituents would just as soon wait, but if the governor felt it imperative to fill the seat, he could have offered some compromise solution -- say, inviting Democrats in the General Assembly to recommend a candidate. That option, however, would have meant forgoing about the only power the governor has left, except the power to make citizens wonder why on earth they ever let him on the ballot.

The appointment evoked no warm feelings among Democrats in the U.S. Senate, who vowed to reject anyone chosen by Blagojevich. Burris, his allies and some legal experts insist the senators lack that constitutional authority , and the U.S. Supreme Courts 1969 ruling that the House could not refuse to seat Adam Clayton Powell suggests they may be right.

But they overlook some pertinent facts. One is that the Powell case took more than two years to resolve, which doesnt bode well for someone aspiring to fill the last two years of Obamas term. The second is that even if Senate Democrats cant legally keep him out, they can render him irrelevant.

Most of the work of Congress is done in committee, and the constitution doesnt say a senator is entitled to serve on committees -- in fact, it doesnt even mention committees. Once on Capitol Hill, Burris may have nothing to do but bask in his new title, show up for an occasional floor vote and cash his paycheck.

For that job, come to think of it, Burris is perfect.

What's wrong with...
One empty suit replacing another.

a MSM Led, Out of Control"Lynch Mob" 1
Steve Chapman states early on in this "hit piece" on Roland Burris:

"U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, a fellow African-American, couldnt resist a racial appeal, urging Blagojevichs critics "to not hang or lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointer."

And winds up positing:

"Most of the work of Congress is done in committee, and the constitution doesnt say a senator is entitled to serve on committees -- in fact, it doesnt even mention committees. Once on Capitol Hill, Burris may have nothing to do but bask in his new title, show up for an occasional floor vote and cash his paycheck."
______________________________________________
So what? Isn't that what Obama himself did?

And in your complaining about U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush of not being able to resist a racial appeal, aren't you, sir, in fact, playing the race card...except dealing from the bottom of the deck?

President Bill Clinton was under investigation. Did anyone determine him unfit to execute the duties of his office because of it? He sent combat Navy warships into action while under investigation and nobody batted an eye!!

With all due respect Mr. Chapman, I would ask you the question, "Why should Mr. Burris not accept the appointment?"

The U.S. Constitution clearly lays out the manner in which Senate vacancies are to be filled:

a MSM led, Out of Control "Lynch Mob" 2

Seventeenth Amendment - Popular Election of Senators

Amendment Text | Annotations
Clause 1. The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.

Clause 2. When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of each State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.

Clause 3. This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution.
______________________________________________

Governor Blagojevich is not only exercising his Constitutional authority in making this appointment, he is performing his
Constitutional duty.

Governor Blagojevich has not been found guilty of any crime, nor has he been impeached. He has only been charged and no indictment has been handed down.

a MSM led, Out of Control "Lynch Mob" 3

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald caused a stir by calling his press conference in which he proceeded to add his own unethical interpretations and opinions to the charges his office had made against the Governor, on national TV, in an obvious attempt to, in effect, lynch...lynch the accused in the "court of public opinion" before he could even have his day in court. This is unconscionable [and unethical] behavior for a U.S. Attorney, or any other law enforcement official.

The "lynching" began before either Burris [or Rush] entered the picture.

Now everybody is clamoring to join the "lynch-mob" [and that's precisely what it is] trying to illegally condemn a man and strip him of his legal authority as the sitting duly-elected Governor of a state, merely on the basis of the accusation of one man.

The same MSM that manipulated the entire presidential campaign through a policy of character assassination of opponents of Barack Obama, and of engaging in an active and open campaign for his election, has turned it's manipulative and destructive energies into fomenting a "lynch-mob mentality" regarding the matters of the Office of the Governor of the State of Illinois, so effectively, that everybody and his mamma [if you will excuse the expression] is buying in to this misguided notion that, somehow, Gov. Blagojevich is unworthy to do this, or do that. Bu!!$h!t!!

This is not only un-Constitutional, it is an OUTRAGE!

Let due process take it's Constitutional course!

In the meantime, don't allow yourself to be carried away by the "brainwashing" and "grandstanding" that is going on in the media, and by the equally culpable idiots and criminals in the Illinois Congress, as well as, those "skillets-calling-the-kettle-black" in Washington, D.C.

a MSM led, Out of Control "Lynch Mob" 5

Every single citizen of the State of Illinois, whether you support Governor Blagojevich or not, ought to take such meddling by the MSM and others in the personal and legal affairs of our state, as a personal assault on the dignity and sovereignty of the voters of Illinois!

Harry Reid does not represent Illinois state business, and should keep his hypersensitive nose out of it!!

You and others can allow yourselves to get swept up in this current attack on the rule of law, as clearly outlined in our state and national Constitutions; having your opinions and attitudes shaped by the current wave of hysteria, brainwashing, psychological manipulation, and grandstanding by all the erstwhile talking heads and self-serving/self-appointed rulers of the dominion of public opinion.

As for me, I will continue to fight to uphold the Constitution of these United States, and take my direction from what is stated therein...

...not from the "nattering nabobs of negativism" Vice-President Spiro T. Agnew, in referring to the "Fourth Estate" of our beleaguered nation, so aptly described.

Roland Burris will make a fine Senator...and after the last one, will be a much welcome breath of fresh air.

I'll take an empty suit any day, over the stuffed shirt minions of public opinion dominion who as more full of hot air as Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Dick "Pol Pot" Durbin, and Harry Reid.

Comptroller?!?!?
Steve writes, "Burris chief claim to fame until this week was his 12-year term as state comptroller, a job whose significance can be measured by the fact that few Illinoisans could identify the current occupant (Dan Hynes)." I would take it a step further and add that even fewer Illinoisans could identify exactly what a comptroller's job description is!

As to the Senate's ability to block Burris' seating, Ann Coulter covered the Senate's history on this subject a couple of weeks ago.

http://townhall.com/columnists/AnnCoulter/2008/12/18/one_pl us_one_equals_20_extra_votes_for_franken

in part...
"In 1974, Republican Louis Wyman won his race for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire, beating Democrat John Durkin by 355 votes. Durkin demanded a recount -- which went back and forth by a handful of votes until the state's Ballot Law Commission concluded that Wyman had indeed won by (at least) two votes.

Wyman was certified the winner by the New Hampshire secretary of state and was on his way to Washington when ... the overwhelmingly Democratic U.S. Senate refused to seat Wyman.

Despite New Hampshire's certification of Wyman as the winner of the election, this was the post-Watergate Senate, when Democrats could get away with anything -- up to and including a prank known as "President Jimmy Carter."

The U.S. Senate spent months examining disputed ballots from the New Hampshire election. Unable to come up with a method to declare the Democrat the winner that didn't require a guillotine, the Senate forced New Hampshire to hold another election.

It was a breathtaking abuse of power. New Hampshire had certified a winner of its Senate election, but it was a Republican, so the Democratic Senate simply ordered a new election."

Republicans should let this play out
Leave this alone. Let the Democrats handle this. Republicans will benefit if they just keep quiet.

Democrats are a lynch mob?
It's not the Republicans Burris has to worry about, it's his own party. For Rep. Bobby Rush to use words like hang and lynch, surely he misspoke. Those words are reserved for Republicans. Rush can't possibility be talking about racism in the Senate can he. After all Burris will be the first black to have a seat in the senate. What is Rush saying? That there is no equality in the Democrat party for blacks who want to have a seat in the senate. There's a question that has to be asked. If Blagojevich was under no investigation, would Burris still be his choice, or is his choice the result of the investigation to get back at the Democrats for wanting his head.

OnceAlways
Big difference between being under investigation and being arrested, don't you think? Clinton wasn't arrested; Blago was. See how that works?

Truth and Lies
The truth is slow of foot and ignored or brushed away especially ir it is a positive comment. The lie has wings, is believed is spread rapidly and acted on. One ounce of a lie out wieghs a million pounds of truth in society.

Chapman: Empty Seat...
You'd think that Burris would reject a seat in the U.S. Senate offered by a desperate and dilly governor...but then again liberals have no conscience about these matters--especially and apparently in Illinois where their reputation keeps growing with amazement!! Burris probably realizes that Senator Reid won't punish him though, so what the heck!!

I smell politics and worse ...
I smell politics and worse, if anything can be smell worse than politicians!

Re: The Dems!!!!
These people in Washington are the worst kind of backstabbing scum I have in my 50+ yrs of living in the country I have ever seen!!! These people are a real piece of work all because Obamarxist said No!!! Crap, this Burris fella does not deserve that type of treatment he is not at fault!! The people who should be saying I screwed up are Obamarxist and Pelsloppy, Weird, and that group of cronies.
Lets not treat someone who deserves by just his own hard service and work like this he does'nt deserve this!!!!

Burris is what we deserve
As a resident of Illinois, I apploud Gov Blago's choice of Burris to the sentate. We can keep the long tradition of sending corrupt and incompetent politicians to Washington alive for years to come. (See Carol Mausley Braun). Blago proves once again we get what we want in life and politics. As long as the Dems control Chicago with their bloated, union controlled civil servants, nothing will ever change

WELCOME AMERICA TO CHICAGO POLITICS!
The corrupt Illinois Governor "Hot Rod" Blagojevich is the face of the true Chicago Democrat Machine, rather than the "party of the people" persona adopted by City Democrats.

BO is a PRODUCT of the Chicago Democrat machine. Some notable "card carrying" MEMBERS (Not the MSM approved "Associates") of the Chicago Democrat Machine are Ayers, Wright, Farrakhan, Chicago ACORN, the Chicago Democratic Socialists, and Boss Daley. Many are in jail. You can't run for dogcatcher in Chicago without the membership's support.

Many MEMBERS are in jail. Many others are under investigation.

Roland Burris? Like OncealwaysaMarine said:
One empty suit replacing another.

Burris better than
Carol Mostly Brown, plus he's a nigra, too. Gotta maintain the status quo - just because he's never been accused of corruption doesn't mean he's not self-serving enough to participate in this buffoonery.

It would be fun to watch, except it's only a little more egregious than the liberal shenanigans here in little ole Tucson.

It's no different than the lawlessness of NJ shoving the cadaverous Frankie Lottenberg into the "retiring" Bob Torocelli's senate seat.

Liberals have succeeded in removing all shame from their politics. Without it, there is no bottom in that pit of dishonesty, depravity and disgrace they can descend to.

When will people connect the gubmint they despise with the scumbags they elect?

Apologies for the n-word, but with Brown, Burris and Rush, it seemed apropriate. If you're offended, grow up. These people and all destructive liberal scum should be what's OFFENSIVE to you.

my 2 cents
democrats are immune to embarrassment and this current (latest) farce is simply one more example of that. And it seems that the voters in the people's state of massachusetts, louisiana and illinois either don't care or are just too darn stupid to do anything about it.

methinks both

and they also have a severe ironY deficiency. You add those two together and you have the current state of affairs. Occasionally the disease spreads to other states, as in a few months ago, but usually some thread of common sense reasserts itself, hopefully this time before too much damage is done.

PS - if bo signs the FOCA the excrement will hit the air circulator with unusual force.

Q: Do most of the really stupid bumper stickers usually appear on the back of mini-vans suvs and Subarus, or is it just me?

Just wondering

I thought you meant Obama!
"An Empty Suit For an Empty Seat"...oh, you were referring about Roland Burris?!?! I thought you were referring to Barack Obama and the presidency of the United States!

Althor :(

An Empty Seat....
Where oh where oh where is Comrade "culture-of-corruption" Pelosi in all this?? I'm sure that termagant could sort this all out for the Communists!!

Hey Rats

I'm sure your input would be welcome.

Pay him to stay home
Is it just me or am I among a growing number who think it would be better if Congress met less often, and passed fewer bills. We elect these people hoping they won't make things worse.
Burris may be the perfect choice, because he will probably be content to do very little to earn his senatorial paycheck. My beef with his appointment is he is that he is already getting a government pension. As Obama himself said, he wants to spread the wealth around.
Burris is an example of the politically rich getting richer. Illinois deserves a new crook, and not this retread

Happy New Year
I am so tired of Chicago politicians that I need to vomit. They went after Al Capone and the Mafia, and replaced them with the political Mafia. Daly, and his family of corrupt bums. The democratic congress and senate should both take a year off, and cleanse themselves of their corruption. Remember Pelosi and Reid? The Republican culture of corruption. Give me a break.

Ground Zero
Has anyone noticed where ground zero for Democratic Party politics is?

Our "President Elect" , a man with NO political achievements, gets elected. (Even though he has a cast of character friends that should make him unelectable). Now Caroline Kennedy, again a person with no political achievements, is the front runner to become a U.S. Senator. She would be UNKNOWN if it wasn't for a certain election, 49 years ago, narrowly won by her father, due to the same county voter fraud Democratic machine:

Cook County, IL.

Taint of Corruption Dog Obama Coronation

One thing is sure in all this, and it is poetic justice of clearly historical [and possibly Biblical] porportions:

Grandstandmaster Harry Reid and his merry band of comrades in Congress and the media, have, with their self-aggrandizing pontifications, have most assuredly and firmly locked in the "stench of corruption" that will be bellowing up from the robes of their earthly and erstwhile "messiah's" pay-to-play [with America's future] inaugural coronation.

All during the election cycle, nose-plugs, ear-plugs, and blinders firmly in place, smiling and fainting Barack Hussein Obama sycophants dancing and prancing, swirling in the opiate stupor brought on by chants of, "Yes we can, Yes we can" ignored the odious repugnant empyreal stench of corruption that seemed to emanate from their savior's manger of the mangy endodermis.

But in the midst of their savior's empty enounciations, rather than perform any emunctory evacuation of the offending organ, they simply & quickly readjusted their nose plugs and to continue to enjoy their ride on the jerkwater train of Obamanation; lifted into a stuporous euphoria that soon Xmas would soon arrive.

Sadly, and prophetically, the stench & and taint of corruption surrounding this Inaugural [thanks to Barack Hussein Obama's "careful choices in friends" in Chicago, Washington,D.C., and the newsrooms of AP & Reuters, will fill the air and the "airwaves" for all the world to smell.

Rick Warren had best be wary that he doesn't walk away from that podium in mid-January, in need of some spiritual fumigation, himself.

OncealwaysaMarine
BTW It is no coincidence that the slogan "Yes we can!" ("Si se puede") which was originally coined by Socialist (Some say Communist) Cesar Chavez became the mantra of BO. BO promised a national holiday for Chavez in the campaign.

Bland and ambitious
I read the part about Burris being bland and ambitious and not making waves. He sounds so much like Obama back in his Illinois days.

You gotta love it
So, both Obama's and Biden's seats will be filled by place holders. Also, note that Bobby Rush's endorsement was a direct contradiction of his earlier comments on Blagojevich.

The Democrats are so entertaining. Two party-wide debacles in one year; first the primary (Florida and Michigan) and now this. What fun!

yes, my fellow Americans,
it was a case of bland ambition.

Boby Rush
Boby Rush blatantly ejects race into debate saying "white must be black" Read it at, http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com/2008/12/white-must-be- black.html

Palinization
The news media have now decided to help Reid-Obama by Palinizing Burris. They will bash and bash and bash in order to turn up the heat against his selection. They are shameless! Even this liberal agrees: http://dissentingjustice.blogspot.com/2009/01/some-media-o utlets-begin-palinizing.html (He in fact, made the argument).

The Pristine Democrat Party

It is so funny to see 'Hot Rod' best the ex-friends who are trying to do him in. Hotrod was fine as long as Obama and his crowd were in with him and his corrupt government. It won't do to taint the "messiah'now that he has made the 'Big Time'.

Obama cannot wash enough to get the stench of the Chicago corruption off him. It will follow him as long as he is around. It is good that Blago won't roll over for him now.

The 'honeymoon' Obama is supposed to have next month after the 'Crowning Of The King',will be a short one. He will have as his bedfellow....'Hotrod'.

A point democras and repubs agree on
"The two Burris children, after all, are named Roland and Rolanda."

Their dogs name is Rover.

Actually
"Wall Street titan Bernard Madoff proved you can take an outstanding reputation and ruin it overnight."
=================================
Wall street has proved you can get an outstanding reputation, even if you are a thief at heart, but never get caught

Ouch!
I love Chapman. He is amongst that rare group of political analyst who can skewer and spit roast without ever calling a name or lobbing an insult. And best yet, he always backs it up with fact.

Empty Suits And Empty Seats
What's the big deal with Burris taking Obama's 'empty seat' ? It's an empty seat filled by an empty suit who is replacing an empty suits' empty seat. Decipher that one.

why is obama throwing blago under ?
I know I'll sound like a nutty conspiracy theorist, but I keep wondering why blago is suddenly so toxic to obama? Didn't obama work the Chicago system supremely well? Wouldn't blago be correct in expecting a little sumptin' sumptin' in return? obama benefits by having blago join all the others who've been thrown under the bus...

So burris get the Illinois senate seat...God willing the Illinois electorate will wake up in the next election and get someone effective.

Meanwhile...al franken is stealing his senate seat, and carolyn kennedy-? is having her tiara polished....

Democrats & Corruption
The Smokin'Gun is hinting that the upcoming trial of Norman Hsu,who was knee deep in the trenches with the Clinton's last year may also have had Obama in there, too. Where will it all end and will the president-elect get seated before the web closes in on him?

Obama Voted Present and Got Elected
I don't believe that you need qualifications to run for U.S. President or U.S. Senate or even a valid U.S. birth certificate. I think you need to have "glistening pectorals" as a female reporter wrote and look good on the beach and have a good "chant." You're considered brillaint if you appoint some of your enemies as well as your supporters on your team to appease even those who voted against you. It's important to say very little, but do chant and remain calm, read articulately, and distance yourself from any anti-American associations in the past who may cause you to fail. But don't explain what "Change" - "is" coming to America, because it all depends on what the word "is" means. The feds keep printing money and inflating those balloons, but everyone knows what happens when you over inflate those balloons, so don't be too surprised if you don't receive any stimulus checks from the redistribution of wealth that was given to those who gave themselves and co-workers bonuses and partied while Congress went on $10,000,000 vacations and fly around in jets at $6,000,000 per year at taxpayers expense and made sure that they gave themselves a big fat raise all at taxpayers expense while they are considering wiping out your social security and free enterprise, talk shows aka free press, and 401ks, and handing out National ID cards so they can track your every move just in case you forget where you live or who you are, I suppose!

We are descending to the level
of a banana republic.
I watched that ridiculous news conference and thought that Rush guy was drunk. What a mush mouth, but he pulled out the race card quicker than Wyatt Earp.
These are public servants? Puleeeze, Bambi comes from this environment of sleaze and claims he's clean?
We are collectively insane to have elected this clown, if he was white he never would have been on the ballot with his "resume".

The race card...again!
Some great vids on Youtube. The first one is Rush stating that any appointment by Blago would be tainted and Blago must not appoint anyone. Then, the 180 degree about-face where Rush demands Burris be seated...and that not to do so is tantamount to lynching Burris.

What gets me is Rush apparently doesn't see the disconnect. No sense of shame or embarrassment for having changed his position so dramatically and so quickly.

And for those naive children who were hoping Obama's election would move us toward a post-racial culture, Rush's behavior (and some columns written by editorialists since the election) put that pipe-dream to rest. IMO we'll see an increase of race-baiting because it's a lucrative industry and to admit Obama's election proves we've moved beyond race is to put "the industry" at risk.

They are ALL
EMPTY SUITS.

OUT WITH THE ENTIRE SENATE ...

AND SCRAP CONGRESS WHILE WE'RE AT IT!

The 'New' Black Panthers
A couple of weeks ago a young black man with a rap sheet as long as his arm, tried to flee a police stop downtown. He tried to run down one of the officers and was shot. He died a few days later.

The night of the shooting,a crowd gathered and started shouting and causing trouble a couple dozen police cars had to be summoned. This happened in a predominately black sub-division.

At the funeral,of course Al Sharpton showed up to get his fifteen minutes of fame, but so did a half-dozen of the 'New Black Panthers' ,waving shotguns and milling about.

In Pennsylvania Nov.4,Black Panthers with shotguns showed up at the polls imtimidating voters. These thugs have no business trying to provoke others to start a riot.

Rep. Bobby Rush is an old ex-Black Panther. Although he is 'over the hill',now,he comes from the crime-laden Chicago Family of Democrats.

To listen to him talk today,he sounds like he got in one too many skirmishes long ago. He knows B.Hussein won't stop Burris. He will make sure.He knows too much.

Loss of esteem for the Senate
The filling of Senate seats is turning into a circus. What a joke, and a shame for the Republic. I hope that in the end, enough reason returns to Minnesota to stop that fraud Al Franken from obtaining something which does not belong to him, and it would be nice if the state of Illinois actually held another election to fill Burris' seat like they really are supposed to.

US Senate is an embarrasment
What was once known as the greatest deliberative body in the World, the 100 member US Senate has turned into a complete joke by the democrats. Al Franken, Roland Burris and Caroline Kennedy none of these people are qualified to lead our nation but the democrats keep piling them on just for more control. We must get rid of the democrats by any and all means necessary.
