In little more than a week, Barack Obama assumes the office of president of the United States and, once again, all will be right with the world.

At least, that’s how some see it. Me? I haven’t consumed any of that Kool-Aid.

It may be that Obama will bring some positive change to the federal government. But just how much harm will his big-government philosophy pile on? Coming from Chicago’s Democratic machine via less than a full term as arguably the most liberal United States senator, Obama offers mostly grist for the skeptics’ mill.

It remains unlikely that we’ll see any meaningful reform, and surely no shrinking of big government.

But remember, President Obama is not acting alone. He will have accomplices.

Though the outgoing Congress earned the lowest public approval scores in the history of such polls, soon-to-be President Obama certainly seems to be counting on the new, even worse, Congress.

Unprecedented for a president-elect, Obama made a national television address before his inauguration to urge swift action on the economy. NBC News reported, “While short on specifics, Barack Obama said that Congress needs to act fast.”

We’ve been getting this “short on specifics” stuff a lot lately. In fact, close to 100 percent of the time. Little explanation or analysis. No deliberation. No transparency. No accountability. Just hysterical (or in Obama’s case: much calmer) pleas to do something — anything!

And fast. Ándale! Ándale!

Has anyone considered the possibility that neither Obama nor Congress has a magic wand with which to wave away our economic troubles? So far, talk of spending an eight or ninth or tenth trillion on more bailouts of failing companies and giving tax cuts to people not paying any taxes are the best things they have come up with.

Where will they get more trillions? The dough could come from us in the form of very unpopular higher taxes, but that too obviously defeats the purpose of this Dr. Frankenstein game. More likely the money will be borrowed (please, President Hu Jintao) and then the money plus interest will be repaid by our children and grandchildren, through onerous taxes.

Or they could simply print lots of new money. Inflating the money might spur the economy for a time. But, long-term, it would steal much of what’s left from those who have managed to save.

However Obama and Congress come up with the cash for a short-term stimulus, it will be later, always later, for the dose of fiscal discipline. Even those who remain goo-goo eyed over Obama must recognize how difficult it is to speak of fiscal discipline and Congress in the same sentence.

Sure, weeks ago this column discussed the audacity and arrogance of the old Congress taking a pay raise — but what about this new Congress?

In its first week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats changed the rules to repeal their own biggest reform from last session, scrapped term limits on powerful committee chairman and eviscerated the minority’s right to be heard.

As part of the majority’s new rules package, Democrats embraced the practice of holding votes open for hours (or days, if necessary) for leadership to twist arms to change the outcome of a floor vote. Republicans had used this tactic and Democrats had then reversed the policy upon gaining majority status. Now, the Democrats signal a shift, to mimic the most corrupt practices of the vanquished Republicans.

On committee chair term limits, Democrats did the right thing by keeping the popular limits after taking control in 2006. Now it is reported that they were just timing their unpopular power grab for later. Those term limits are now gone, repealed, so that career politicians such as Charlie Rangel and Barney Frank can bang their powerful gavel in perpetuity. To their credit, Republicans have kept their term limits for ranking minority committee members.

The majority Democrats also made it much tougher for minority Republicans to force votes on various issues. The previous rule had allowed Republicans to embarrass Democrats by forcing votes on alternatives. Heaven forbid that Congress should consider — or vote on — more than one idea.

Republican Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio sent a letter to Pelosi saying these initial actions have “grave implications for the American people and their freedom, coming at a time when an unprecedented expansion of federal power and spending is being hastily planned by a single party behind closed doors.”

Boehner is right to complain, but I fear that were this “unprecedented expansion of federal power” to arrive in a more bipartisan wrapper, he wouldn't squawk. In fact, I do not recall his earnest concerns over President Bush’s many breaches of constitutional limits and common sense.

I don’t mean to be pessimistic. Just truthful.

Our republic is in trouble. We have to recognize that our economic problems are but a symptom of even bigger political problems

Taxing Future Generations
Since those who are not yet born do not get to vote for our current leaders, any legislation which spends money that cannot be completely paid by voters living now is Taxation Without Representation. It was bad in 1776. It is still bad in 2009.

Rulers
Has everyone forgotten that we are not suposed to have "rulers" in this country, but only elected and appointed office-holders, all of whom are the EMPLOYEES of the people? That's right, they are all our employees, from the President on down, but we have been treating them with entirely too much deference for way too long. They are not "important," whilst we are "little people," because they are all our employees. Remind yourself of that on a daily basis, at least. And never re-elect anyone to any office, ever.

History & TLC
Over the weekend I have watched a number of programs on the Hist and The Learning ghannels. The subject as predictions by the Aztecs, Nostradamus, and many other peoples "Thousands of miles and thousands of years apart".

On Dec 21, 2012 some devastating or stupendous event will occur. There were no predictions for after 2012. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN????? End of the world, maybe???

The one thing that really bugs me...
Every major city I have been in (St. Louis, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis) since November, has very large billboards of Obama's face with tag lines of Hope, Change, Progress.

There is something very unnerving about any man who doesn't seem to mind seeing his face plastered on the side of a building or along the side of a highway.

Can you say Dictator?
Oh that's right, it could never happen here in America.


Give Obama the benefit of the doubt?
I don't think Obama needs any more "benefit of the doubt" than what he's already received from the demobrats that elected him... he's gonna need a whole lot more than that for the next four years.

Let's just hope he doesn't completely embarrass himself or destroy this country.


I just want to scream
The Democrats can get away with what ever they want because the MSM won't negatively report it. This Congress is more corrupt than any in history but as long as it is a Democrat, it is ok.
Those of you who don't think the MSM is left biased, you are full of whale dung. Those of you who think Obama is the messiah that will save this country, you have been filled with whale dung and have no clue. Our founding fathers tried to tie down the beast, but the politicians and MSM have loosed the bindings.

Maybe we should give President Elect Obama the benefit of doubt. He has appointed some very good people to serve government. He had nothing to do with the selection of Pelosi and Reid and did not tank the economy.

Can anyone name one person that has known Obama before he moved to Chicago?

The Republic's only hope
We need a constitutional amendement term limiting Congress. Thank God we have the 22nd amendment term limiting the president. Now we need the 28th amendment term limiting these good for nothing politicians in Congress. Let them go back to their states and help fix the problems in their local communities and let's get some problem solvers in Washington that will look out for our great country and not their reelection.


More Panic
Once again, we listen to another politician or academic or social reformer or environmental activist, who tells us the crisis is upon us, if we fail to act it will be even worse than what we think we know it will be, and you must give me complete authority to act however I deem appropriate, no matter what & no matter how much it costs, because if you fail to act immediately or sooner, the sky will fall, the heavens will open up & destroy us, the rivers will run dry, the sun will burst & death will follow us into eternity.

This new guy apparently believes he is the Messiah. He really could be the end of this country. I have this nightmare of hyper inflation wherein a loaf of bread is $10 and other items are high. Inflation is worse than a tax increase
While we are squabbling about whether Democrats or Republicans have screwed us the most, we are missing the big picture... that BOTH of them are screwing us. We can learn a lot from history, for example consider what John Kennedy said: Inflation is the most insidious form of taxation." While all our elected officials are hell bent on spending our way out of the impending depression (now called a recession) which has been caused by unsustainable fiscal policies at all levels, the dollar will be devalued robbing not only the buying power of our present income but our savings as well. Teh only silver lining is that we can repay China and the Oil producing countries with devalued dollars until they get smart and either base the debt on a stable currency or adjust the debt payments based on inflation.

As kids we were taught that covering up a lie only made matters worse. Yet our elected officials failed to learn this as demonstrated by their borrowing on a scale never before conceived of. Government needs to come clean and learn from its mistakes as do consumers that bought into unsustainable debt.

Instead we are trading our future standard of living for a short term band-aid fix that will ultimately fail making the "correction" far more painful.

Repeal the 17th Amendment
The People were given a voice in the House of Representatives. The interest of the people do not always agree with the interest of the States. The States had a voice in the Senate but the 17th Amendment eliminated it. Since then, the Federal Government has run amok over the States and either infringed upon or blatantly taken over State powers. The only hope we have now is for State Governors and Governments to "Take the Tenth!" Amendment X "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

A couple of you got it exactly right! We are now in a fight for personal survival and the ride is going to be rough.

I've told my yellow-dog Demmie friends and relatives, "You got what you wanted. Tell me in a year - or even six months - if what you got is what you expected. Also tell me if you are pleased."

Strange looks and few responses. I suspect those who voted in the dimmies and BHO are seeing they are NOT getting what they wanted.

Hey! BHO KNOWS a dissatisfied and angry citizenry might actually rebel. That's why he has promised to create his Civilian Defense Force (exactly like Hitler created the brownshirts).

Seriously, unless action is taken soon and unless there are some serious consequences for those elected officials who misuse and/or abuse this republic, our children will suffer consequences none of us intended.

What the PE intends for this country, as outlined this week in his own words, is unacceptable. The House and Senate have been acting for years and years and years like they are "ordained" to act FOR the good of the 'little people.' My neice and step-kids deserve better.

Survivalism is No Longer a Dirty Word
It's past the time to seek out like-minded survivalists in your area. I don't mean screwballs that want to attack the government institutions, but decent neighbors who can be trusted to watch your back when times get rough.

Prepare and cache the material, food and defensive tools that allow you to shelter in place and not become economic refugees. Accumulate goods to barter in a collapsed economy. Learn primitive skills like canning and other food preservation techniques. Turn lawns into gardens this summer, but disguise the size of your harvest.

Lay low. Don't provoke attack or government confiscation by advertising your degree of readiness. The key is to survive the initial convulsions to the social order and come out in one piece.

In politics, as in sports, the GOOD and BAD come into clear focus in the extremes. Yet, in politics the playing field is manipulated from outside by those with a self-serving desire for influence and power that has corrupted our institutions to the point of no return; unless WE THE PEOPLE make sure that the playing field is not manipulated.

What is the answer?...That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Give Mr. Obama credit
He got elected and global warming can no longer even be considered can it? He may have had such an effect on it that his own coronation is stormed out. I beleive another winter storm is predicted for late in the week or early next week.

This is leadership?
The Democrats promised transparency and ethics reform. We know the public generally favors term limits, knowing that they combat cronyism. Democrats eliminate them. Good for Republicans to keep them. In fact, I think Republicans should set up their own ethics reforms for their party, show the Democrats how responsible we can be!

Also, not accepting Republican amendments and now stifling debate. How's that for bipartisanship? Of course, it's all politics. The Dems will still blame the Republicans for anything that goes wrong, although it will be harder since they have eviscerated our party.

Democrat and Republican Collectivism
Unfortunately, the Democrat Party does not have a solid lock on collectivism. The RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) are doing well on the collectivist front.

RINOs long ago abandoned conservative/ libertarian principles just so they could get elected to power.

They claim they "can't do anything if they are not in power." That is true, but if you "get in power" and then try to out-Democrat the Democrats, what have you accomplished but more intense collectivism?

If the GOP does not dump the RINOs like Mc Cain, Specter, Collins, Snow, etc., etc., they deserve to lose and we will actually be better off for it.

There should be no such thing as a "career politician." Eight years is aplenty. How long does it take for one's head to swell to immense proportions, anyway?


Perhaps a new Constitution Party could "throw the bums out." All of them, Democrats, Scamocrats, Scumocrats, Republicrats, RINOs, "neo-cons, and "compassionate conservatives."

Remember, "W" learned at the knee of "GHW," the "nice-guy RINO who brought us the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) --- a tremendous burden on the free market. He violated the Constitution.

This country was founded as a "representative republic," not a so-called democracy, plutocracy, oligarchy, or monarchy.

Party Labels

You should call their party the Democrat Party, not the Democratic Party.

If the members of the party were called "Collectivists, would you called it the Collectivistic Party?

If he fails, the USA will pay the penalty. If he succeeds, the Democrats will be in power who knows how long. Most of their policies seem to me to be unsound. As you see, I have mixed feelings. I am strong for the USA and not strong for the Democrats. The Republicans were not at all patriotic when their behavior allowed the Democrats to get the Senate, the House and the White House. They had it and they blew it. Some time I would like to to be able to vote for the candidates that I thought were the best rather than voting for those I thought less bad.

Obama must fail
It will never cease to amaze me that so many idiots say they want Obama to succeed. I don't want dirty Obama Chicago politics. I don't want the deranged ideas of Wright and Ayers spread throughout the US. And I don't want a biased media again deciding who the president should be. The lib media is on a politically correct trip where they got a black lib in for president this time and next time it will be a gay, then a muslim, etc. It does not take a genius to figure out that this is a recipe for a third world nation. You idiots wanted CHANGE, now you get to change the greatest country in the world to a hell hole like Zimbabwe.

It is better that we take our lumps now and learn a big lesson before it is too late. Obama needs to make huge blunders and people in the US need to suffer for electing him. That is the only way people will begin to look closer at the actual candidate and for the media to get out of the business of selecting our leaders.

This country was founded by people that wanted freedom from government! Only by voting against ALL incumbents will we ever see an end to the Tax and Spend, More Big Government lunatic policies of Congress. 90+% of a 12% approval rated Congress were re-elected?! Most by a wide margin. It is high time that we start kicking these bums out!!

YES!! Where, indeed, will this money come from? China is about to turn off the spigot, and Europeans are revolting over raised taxes. It is insulting that we are being asked to budget for our food while Congress completely ignores income-outgo.

Trouble & Imperialism
I want to scream out in terror when I read where our country is going via sleight of hand, disinformation, apapthy and greed. I have written my Congressmen and Senators and always get back a stupid form letter, never really addressing the concerns I wrote about. It is like they have me pigeon-holed as a crackpot and send me supposedly soothing pre-written internist letters. So much for congress listening to the taxpayer. I have to agree with the topic discussed in realclearpolitics. Thanks for the link. I have a tendancy to forget other sites. I keep hearing we must unite, but I would like some particulars. I have entertained an idea of starting a door to door canvass of my city to call the people to action, but I am deaf and it would not be a good experience. I wrote a letter to the editor which was never published, so they must have my name under crackpot also. I don't know how much more of this congressional garbage I can take. I am very serious when I say congress needs to cut their salaries by 25% immediately and special perks by 50% followed each year with a further cut in each of 5% and 10% respectively for five years and TOTALLY illiminate retirement benefits and make them pay for a portion of their own medical care like everybody else is expected to. WE THE PEOPLE have been asleep long enough. Time to wake and call to action. The constitution is under attack and we are ho-hum about it.

I once made a political donation and immediately received "woe is me" letters from about 20 oranizations and people, most I had never heard of. This tells me there is a list somewhere we could get to send out a mass mailing a little at a time for the next two years to try and educate the people. But it would have to be a short letter and to the point, not some gushy general anestatizing (sp?) drone of a letter. I have the time and means by which I could personalize these letters to reach a somnambulent audience.

How Long?
The fact that criminals like those currently serving in Congress are elected again and again speaks to the Billy Ayers influence on education in this country. These people are rendered stupid by being spoon-fed propaganda and untruths by a corrupt education system. It is also aided by the so-called 'news media' that spews forth propaganda and vomits up half-truths or downright distortions for these venal politicians. I agree with those posters who have said that this this nation is in trouble; it most certainly is. My questions is this: How long will it be before there is armed revolt against those who sit in power to destroy the livelihoods and freedoms of the non-dependent, non-deceived American people?

re elected them because this government mirrors their own corruption. Do you think for one minute bubba would have been allowed to remain in office with is immoral conduct if we'd had a majority of moral and religious people our Founders said would only keep this Republic working? Would a moral and religious people have allowed him and Gore to sell our secrets to China and elsewhere? Would a moral and religious people (I should have also included patriotic above) allowed a nonentity like O
to stand abroad and trash U.S. and be ELECTED?

No, and it's not all their fault, it's the fault of the American church for turning to entertainment instead of preaching the Cross and Him Cruicified. There are people who attend church on Sunday without fail but haven't a clue about what it means to be a follower of Christ and it isn't using God as an ATM machine or using TQM business methods to fill the pews and thus the coffers of huge churches such as Saddleback. Add in the fear of the IRS and we have a lukewarm body of go along to get alongs otherwise we wouldn't have elected the worst Baby torturer in our Senate or have allowed 50,000 million unborn babies to die horrible deaths worse than seen during the Nazi reign of terror. Nope, we are our own worst enemies and it's up to the believers in the church to seek His face on our knees, repent and pray that He will heal our land (2 Chron, 7:14) if we don't we, the people are toast. We have already voted for death in the person of O and his 'choice' mentality..how far down must we go before we look up to Him, and not this false messiah.

Change of hope
"Our republic is in trouble. We have to recognize that our economic problems are but a symptom of even bigger political problems." You got that right Paul. The majority of American people (misguided, misinformed, uninformed and apethetic) need to wake up and get involved. It is time for WE THE PEOPLE to act as one and remove every single career politician on the Hill and replace them with every day people with some friggin common sense! This garbage has gone on for entirely too long and the actions of Marie Antoinette (Pelosi) and crew of the new administration only serve to illustrate this point in vivid clarity. Get pissed off people and DO something!

Your version of these alleged "breaches" would surely not match mine. Bush 43's main fault has been his misguided effort to ignore or accomocate ankle-biters like you. He personifies the deficiencies of mushy-headed Methodism.

CONGRESS KNOWS
Our liberal Congress knows that the success of their liberal agenda is diametrically opposite of their approval rating. Would their approval rating to go up, they would know their agendas were failing.
Think about it, if, in fact, politicians actually regarded the American people as their 'employers', they would be subject to working under and for us and dare I say, on a 'time clock'. But,they haven't for years, knowing full well, that if the American people 'took charge', we would 'terminate' the employment of most of them.
Politicians 'life work' is ensuring the power and growth of their existence, and We the People, in our own individual struggles to better our lives have handed them the 'role' of 'employer' allowing them to demote us to the 'position' of employee (subject to them).
Only once in a while can we 'fire' a politician, for elections and voting are 'fixed' and 'fraudulent'. Congress plays 'deaf' to our Voice. They are silently pleased by our single digit approval rating for it proves their 'power', in that we have no organized way to make them respond to it.
The government, which looks down on us as their 'employees' may not be able to 'fire' us, however, one of these days, We the People, being members of the largest 'Union', the 'Union' of our Country, may be forced to go on 'Strike'.
