Will Congress pass Obamacare by the end of the year?

Six imams got on a plane in Minneapolis. Accounts vary, but it seems that they were speaking in Arabic before boarding of their disgust with the U.S. war in Iraq and with American policy in general. One was heard to declare that he would do whatever was necessary to fulfill his obligations under the Koran. Another repeated, "Allah, Allah." Once aboard, they aroused suspicion by requesting seat-belt extenders that they did not appear to require and took seats not together but scattered throughout the plane.

Several people contacted the flight attendants, and the men were asked to leave.

Now comes the nonsense. The Associated Press declares that this is a case of "flying while Muslim," and a TV anchor compares the imams to Rosa Parks. Nihad Awad of the Council on American-Islamic Relations denounced the incident as an example of "Islamophobia," adding, "We are concerned that crew members, passengers and security personnel may have succumbed to fear and prejudice based on stereotyping of Muslims and Islam."

The Department of Homeland Security has announced that its Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties is opening an inquiry into the incident. And talk radio is abuzz. "Would they have done the same to a group of priests?" asked one talk radio host. "Or rabbis?"

Let us assume, for the sake of argument, that the person who was overheard chanting "Allah, Allah" was actually saying something else. Let's go ahead and allow that there was nothing suspicious about the request for seat-belt extenders, as several of the imams were a bit rotund. Let's even agree that the six imams were "victims" of discrimination.

It's a shame. But it's absolutely necessary. It cannot have been pleasant to be denied the opportunity to fly, to be singled out, to be embarrassed in front of a plane full of strangers. But this knee-jerk reaction to the word "discrimination" is completely out of place in this discussion.

When passengers see six Arab men praying, talking animatedly in Arabic (a fellow passenger understood Arabic and was one of those who contacted a flight attendant), and then boarding an airplane and sitting in different places, I wonder what goes through their minds? Is it: "I sure don't like Muslims. Think I'll just harass and annoy them"? Or could it possibly be: "Oh dear God, this is what the 9/11 hijackers must have looked like"?

Is it discrimination? Well, of course it is. But that cannot be the end of the discussion. We are so robotic in America whenever the word "discrimination" is used that we shut down thought and all genuflect in the direction of whoever is complaining. But the proper question is not whether it is discrimination but whether it is justified.

Of course passengers would not be nervous in the presence of six priests or six rabbis. Neither of these groups has any history of blowing up innocent people. Nor do Americans despise those who pray. In fact, uniquely among Western democracies, we are great fans of religion.

But Islam is problematic. While we would love to think that Islam is as pacific as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism or Hinduism, the facts suggest otherwise. Time and again, terrorists who have committed or attempted to commit murder on a large scale have done so after becoming serious Muslims.

This is a hijacking of a great faith you say? Maybe so. I'm inclined to believe it since I do not think that a billion people would be drawn to a religion of hate. But that much having been said, the haters within Islam are certainly having a heck of a run at the moment. Maybe they are only 10 percent of the worldwide total of the umma, but that still leaves us with 100 million very religious fellows who believe they have divine sanction to blow us up.

One final note, if Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch, is correct, one of the imams ejected from that plane, Omar Shahin, was involved with the Islamic charity Kind Hearts, which has had its assets frozen by the U.S. Treasury Department because of its connections to the terrorist group Hamas.

hypocrisy
I found SteveHerbert's post particularly interesting because of the remarkable contradictions it displays.

Item 1: "What does it take to become an Inman? Denounce a few Christian? ... Preach hate and intolerence for other faiths?"

Point taken. There are fundamentalist Muslim clerics who preach hatred and intolerance and whose public speeches have led to outbursts of violence both in the Middle East and in the West.

However, the same poster says,

"Until the day Islam truly becomes a peaceful and productive religion in society, it should be outlawed."

What is this but hate and intolerance for other faiths? How can anyone chastise Muslims for their hatemongering and then adopt the exact same position? It is not only unchristian, but also unamerican/unwestern to advocate that millions of people, most of them peaceful and inconspicuous, be deprived of the fundamental right to practise their faith.

Perhaps my perspective is different as a white, Christian Canadian who lives in an urban area with people of many ethnicities and faiths. The Muslims that I see everyday, either going to class or to work, running their businesses, are peaceful and productive people who do not threaten anyone and who contribute to the economy just like everyone else. Those who do not, along with anyone else who breaks the law, are dealt with accordingly. Justice is served when criminals are prosecuted. But only bigotry and hatred are served when due to the acts of a few, millions are made to suffer.

Item 2: "Today, NO Christian or Jewish religion preaches hatred and intolerence."

Say what? What kind of ivory tower do you live in? Are you under the impression that Israeli rabbis profess love and acceptance for Arabic Palestinians? Have you never heard a fundamentalist pastor thunder not only against the "heathen," but also against Christians of other denominations? And yet, we take a much more rational view of such expressions of hatred and intolerance. We understand that both Israelis and Palestinians are motivated to spew hatred by a long-drawn conflict. We understand that just because some Christians are intolerant, not all of them are and most are reasonable people. So is the average, non-fundamentalist Muslim and we should be able to understand that the sins of the few should not reflect on the many. Otherwise, I'm afraid we'd have to lobby for the outlawing of the Roman Catholic Church because a few priests have committed despicable acts of abuse.

More interesting things:

"Though the way Liberals are at war with Christianity, you would think that Catholic Nuns had perpetrated 9/11."

Liberals at war with Christianity? Oh, the benefits of inflated rhetoric. Has a Liberal government ever closed or bulldozed churches? Have Christians been prevented from expressing their religious views? Have Christians been prevented from assembling in public? Have we been forced to tattoo a cross on our foreheads and denied rights because of this? Have the Liberals created concentration camps for Christians?

When this happens, then you can rationally argue that anyone is at war with Christians. From what I see, many who profess to be Christ's followers demand deportation and concentration camps for Muslims or the limitation of their religious rights. Turning things around and playing victim is just a stratagem to detract attention from hate-speech. And for the record, anyone who supports concentration camps for innocent civilians does not have the right to call him/herself a Christian. Doing so would be an abuse and a desecration of everything Christ lived and died for.

"I have yet to see anyone be forced to convert to Christinity but [sic - by?] the Government."

I have yet to see anyone being forced to convert to Islam by the Liberals. Or to give up Christianity.

"The danger Liberal's see in Christianity is a figment of their imagination, much like evolution, global warming and their intellectual superiority."

You see, I am all about expressing religious views freely. But denying evolution and global warming has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with ignorance. As it happens, many respected Christian denominations see no contradiction between faith and science and understand that there is a place for each. Accepting scientific fact does not make someone less of a Christian. The fact that fundamentalist denominations prefer to consider those Christians open to scientific fact heathens is yet another proof that intolerance and hatred breed in the Christian Churches as well.

But what I find amusing is that someone can go on about the Liberal hysteria regarding Christianity and fail to see the Conservative hysteria regarding Liberals.

Finally, "They seem to think they can do socialism the right way, unlike the rest of the West that have crippled their economies with entitlements and tax burdens."

Interesting. According to the 2006 Human Development Report, Norway, Iceland, Sweden, and Canada all have better standards of living than the US. Must be the socialism and the entitlements ...

The USAir was set up.
This was a publicity stunt by the Muslim scum. To call them Muslim "clerics" or "leaders" gives them too much credibility. What does it take to become an Inman? Denounce a few Christian? Blame the West for all of the Middle East's problems? Preach hate and intolerence for other faiths?

Until the day Islam truly becomes a peaceful and productive religion in society, it should be outlawed. Today, NO Christian or Jewish religion preaches hatred and intolerence. Though the way Liberals are at war with Christianity, you would think that Catholic Nuns had perpetrated 9/11. I have yet to be told by a Catholic Priest that I will be killed if I convert to another faith. I have yet to see anyone be forced to convert to Christinity but the Government. The danger Liberal's see in Christianity is a figment of their imagination, much like evolution, global warming and their intellectual superiority.

As for liberals and their trolls. Liberal trolls are know to inhabit their parent's basements and are habitual vidiots. Ignoring them is the best policy. Don't feed the trolls.

Liberals are hypocrites that hate their country, yet love the life it provides for them. They want to see it humbled, yet want to keep the liberties it's stature provides. They seem to think they can do socialism the right way, unlike the rest of the West that have crippled their economies with entitlements and tax burdens.

Middle Eastern terrorists are the enemies we can and will defeat. American Islamic terrorists and Liberals are the threat that may just destroy us.
