Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

More specifically, Frank Lombard stands accused of molesting his five year old adopted son. Is this arrest thwarting an effort by Lombard to promote tolerance of incest in the Episcopal Church?

Finally, Frank Lombard stands accused of telling a stranger he could rape his five year old adopted son. Is this arrest thwarting an effort by Lombard to promote tolerance of rape in the Episcopal Church?

Readers of my column, even those from the San Francisco area, will be quick to point out that pedophilia, incest, and rape are more repugnant morally than homosexuality. But where does one draw the line?

In 2003, many defenders drew a line (read: manufactured a standard) by saying that Jesus never specifically condemned homosexuality in the New Testament. But there is a huge problem: Jesus never specifically condemned pedophilia, incest, or rape in the New Testament either.

After my friend told me that any church he joins must allow gay deacons I asked this question: When you chose to cohabitate with your boyfriend did this also impose on the church a demand that they allow cohabitating deacons?

The question can be worded another way: Is it the role of the church to shape the culture or to merely reflect it?

That Frank Lombard was arrested on the day of Michael Jackson’s death is highly symbolic. Christians need to take a break from worshipping this culture and the idols it produces. We need to take a closer look at the man in the mirror.

Not your best work, Mike.
This is really dissapointing, and a very cheap trick. This seems beneath you, and disingenuous. When a friend comes to you and tells you of his troubles, you don't honestly try and help? Instead, you use his problems as lead-in for a story that has nothing to do with homosexuality. You are not really walking with God on this one.

Why are you holding up Lombard as being representative of gays or episcopalians? He is neither. He is obviously a monster who should either be incarcerated for the rest of his life, or executed. That's like saying Timothy McVeigh represents heterosexuals, or Rev. Jim Jones represents evangelicals, or Terry Sanford represents republican politicians.

I know a little bit about pedophiles from my work as a prosecutor. The vast majority of them are straight, not gay. Homosexuality is not a contributing risk factor for sex-crimes. Almost all of the rapists and child molesters in the USA are straight.

I know some people get confused and what to say that pedophiles and gays are the same thing, but they are not. I think you probably know better, and it is dissapointing to see you stretch the truth, for the sake of sophistry.

@Shrug - Churches Do Change Cultures
Christians change cultures by spreading the gospel, living it out, and standing against evil. For example, slavery ended because abolitionists Christians like Frederick Douglas and William Wilberforce challenged the sinful status quo. (Contrast this to Muslim countries where slavery is still prevalent.)

I'll close with a quote by Martin Luther King, who condemned churches that silently condoned the evil (e.g., Jim Crow) instead of opposing it:

"Things are different now. So often the contemporary church is a weak, ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound. So often it is an archdefender of the status quo. Far from being disturbed by the presence of the church, the power structure of the average community is consoled by the church's silent and often even vocal sanction of things as they are.

But the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. If today's church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be
dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century. "
