Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

After a month in complete control of the federal government, Democrats in Congress and the White House have quickly dispensed with any notion that we have entered into a new post-partisan era of governance. Their campaign claims of wanting to govern inclusively were greeted with optimism by the more gullible among us. However, their recent actions leave no doubt as to their true intentions. They will push through whatever they want whenever they want. The minority party need not participate.

Their first order of business was the wasteful $787 billion economic stimulus bill, rushed through Congress with no Republican votes in the House and three in the Senate. Now they are eager to tackle such controversial and partisan measures like the Fairness Doctrine and card check. And, while the president has recently signaled his opposition to the Fairness Doctrine, card check is an entirely different matter.

Euphemistically called the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), card check is anything but. In fact, some may say it is a bit Orwellian.

Further, the measure is a huge political payback to the Democrats’ loyal supporters in organized labor. If passed, it will give big labor the unchecked ability to swell its ranks with new dues paying members.

Here is how it works.

For several decades, employees have enjoyed the right to join a union by voting on the issue with a secret ballot. EFCA would dramatically alter the system of voting on the union question. Rather than casting secret ballots, workers would be asked to sign authorization cards expressing their desire to join a union. These cards would be signed in the open, without the benefit of privacy. The legislation also imposes penalties on employers who illegally interfere with organization drives. On the other hand, there are no penalties for labor unions for illegal interference.

Union bosses say the current system favors employers who want to prevent unionization, and they argue this legislation restores the freedom of workers’ to join a union. They also claim employers intimidate their workers when a unionization process begins.

Those who oppose EFCA claim that it represents an unprecedented government intrusion into the rights of employers and employees to negotiate freely about pay and conditions. Removing the secret ballot, they say, would practically force workers to join a union through the simple “card check” process. Opponents also argue that workers would lose control over their ability to choose whether or not to be represented by a collective bargaining agreement, and they are concerned about the lack of penalties against unions who illegally interfere with the process.

Union bosses have said that if EFCA becomes law, they will be able to double or triple their membership within a year. That may be true, but what will the cost be to our employment picture? The relationship between labor and management has always been a unique and challenging dynamic in our country. Today, businesses both large and small survive because of the healthy relationship that exists due to a respectful understanding between the two sides.

Even the slightest legal change can result in drastic upheaval in our system. The sudden introduction of unions into this environment – an introduction which, under the proposed legislation, would not necessarily reflect the will of employees – could represent a sudden shock to the workplace system.

While workers today enjoy the right to unionize, the secret ballot helps guarantee that unionization is the will of the employee, free of undue pressure or intimidation. That’s why removing the protection of the secret ballot – one of the main provisions of EFCA – represents too drastic a step in these uncertain times.

The fact our new “post-partisan” government wants to payback its political supporters should come as no surprise to political observers. That they are willing to do it by taking away the right of workers to vote by secret ballot is telling. George Orwell saw it coming.

Unions????
I have avoided unions all my life. My grandfather was a Wobblie, at an early age, and by the time old union organizers were blacklisted by the HUAC (House Unamerican Activites Committee) the unions were mostly in the back pockets of organized crime. Those leaders also did nothing, NOTHING, to stand up for the people who planted the early seed of their power. When they killed Jock Yablonsky (Pres United Mine Workers) for trying to be a good union leader, unions showed they needed a flush. And now we have, once again a Hoffa leading a union...

I may be naive, but since the new stimulus bill requires all state infrastructure jobs be union jobs, even here in Texas,
(maybe the last bastion of free thought on the same continent as Alaska) am I the only one to whom the smell of cigars has once again become a familiar icon of the "new politics"?

1984?
Only a quarter century late... but pulling into the station at last. No more Constitution. No more Bill of Rights. No more America.

Long Live Big Brother! His name is Eric Holder... and he's watching YOU!

Unions????
With out them we would still be slaves but they went way overboard and helped destroy the auto industry and the post office retirement at 30 years is 80% of there wages and lifetime medical. Payed for by you. There is no bargaining power with out the Union. Most business owners will not pay you a decent wage and will cut benefits when ever they feel like it. I have watched my income go down for 18 years. I have been a diesel truck mechanic for 40 years. I am in the top 3 in production at the dealership I work at and the owner will give none a raise and keeps cutting benefits. He owns 5 dealerships. Yes there is a need for honest fair unions. But most unions are crooked. Most of the wealthy business owners are crooks. My brother makes 140k and pays $10 an hour with no benefits for building maintenance, pretty sad. When the people finally get tired of being used and walked on and stand up and say NO MORE!!! we can fix the country. A minimum wage for each type of job, a maximum wage for CEOs. A maximum profit for owners, the excess to be paid to employees and stock holders. A minimum benifit package depending on size of business and number of employees. Get rid of the illegals and fine and jail there employers. Mcdonalds restaurants guarentee a mil in profit with in 3 years of buying there franchise and there employees cant pay the rent or put food on there tables. Wake up Stand up NO MORE. God Bless you all. Gene

Impeach Obama-Enemy of Constitution 2

The Marxist lover of legislation-more-than Constitutional restraint on government rule by fiat, didn't stop there...

The Socialist "Constitutional scholar's" comments continued:
______________________________________________

"And that hasn't shifted and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so court-focused I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change.

In some ways we still suffer from that.”

IMPEACH OBAMA- Self-Avowed ENEMY OF THE CONSTITUTION and HATER OF FREE-MARKET CAPITALISM.

Impeach this Enemy of the Constitution 1

Seven years before Barack Obama's "spread the wealth" comment to Joe the Plumber, Obama said the U.S. has suffered from a fundamentally flawed Constitution that does not mandate or allow for redistribution of wealth.

In a newly unearthed tape, Obama is heard telling Chicago's public station WBEZ-FM in 2001 that "redistributive change" is needed, pointing to what he regarded as a failure of the U.S. Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren in its rulings on civil rights issues in the 1960s.

The Warren court, he said, failed to "break free from the essential constraints" in the U.S. Constitution and launch a major redistribution of wealth.

But Obama, then an Illinois state lawmaker, said the legislative branch of government, rather than the courts, probably was the ideal avenue for accomplishing that goal.

In the 2001 interview, Obama said:

“… the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn't that radical.

It didn't break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, at least as it's been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. “

Says what the states can't do to you.

Says what the federal government can't do to you,

but doesn't say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf.”

MUST DO...?

WTF?

Orwellian language
Newspeak is operating in the Obama presidency as we read and write. I agree totally with Mr. Blackwell.

Speaking Arabic
Oh, let the left have their fun. We will all either be dead or speaking Arabic by the time our fearless leader gets out of office.

THE CHICAGO MACHINE TAKES OVER WASHINGTO
The recent actions by Obama and the Congresss
threaten the very foundation of our Republic.
Congress has just passted the largest spending bill in our history by essentially suspending the democratic process including an open debate and public examination of the pending bill.

This bill was to lay the ground work of the remaking of America's political system into a one party system. Obama has used the weakening economy as his Reichstag fire event to get to pass an incredible amount of money so he could funnel hugh amount of pork and policitcal payoffs to his Democratice cronies and political allies. The bulk of the stimulus package goes directly to governmental employee and service employee unions who helped get Obama elected and are the backbone of the Democratic Party.

This bill will create over 30 new government programs. This stimulus will give the Democrats the oportunity to be the dominant political party for the next generation.

We must stop this madness now. There will be a backlash by the end of this year against this administration if the spending does not stop. There are rumors of a second stimulus bill already.

This is my country and I care what is happening. What say you America?

The union fallacy
The union bureaucracy is a microcosm of the federal bureaucracy. It is not meant for anything but assuring the existance of the bureaucracy for the sake of maintaining the heirarchy of jobs. There is a cost for maintaining this heirarchy and a performance cost that will be inefficient because it can't be changed unless the company goes under. Therefore we will be insuring the company performance will drop to maintain the union bureaucracy. This could have all been changed in the 60's and 70's when mediation could have been introduced as an alternative to unions. But now there is an entire party indebted to the unions and now the other repayment they're waiting on is more members from the Hispanics being made citizens and forced into the system.

"Silver Lion, you must be wealthy beyond
all imagination if you can just sit and watch this unfold".....

No, not really....I just believe the following, COMPLETELY!

"God rules his creation. Nothing is outside his authority—not even the leaders of the nations and kingdoms of this world. No person is placed in a position of power outside of God's will. This can be a great comfort when we see leaders take over in various places, especially leaders with whom we do not agree.

So what does this mean for the cruel tyrants of the world? It means that they too are under God's authority. Satan may author their evil acts, but their wrongdoing can only occur within the boundaries God sets. Why those boundaries are where they are for some nations is a question only God can answer. But we can rest assured that no power is in authority outside of God's plan. God always accomplishes his will, even through the most wicked leaders. God is always the final authority."

See the last statement? "God is always the final authority"....

Let BOTH parties reap the fruits of their political deeds....It sure will provide some comical relief, justice, and certainly entertaining drama. This is FAR better than the "The West Wing" TV series and Oprah COMBINED!

Unions killed newspapers
NYC had 16 in 1968, Phila. used to have morning and evening editions of the Bulletin and Inquirer, and now the LA Times is bankrupt, the NYTimes is trying to lease its own building (but that's because no one wants to read their lib. krap), and the Washington Post hasn't had a profitable quarter since 2007.
Unions have killed pub. ed., so that DC srs. graduate reading on the 4th grade level--a major reason why COng. sends its kids to private schools.
Unions killed steel, killed fabric, apparel, and fashion; are killing autos, and would kill coal and oil if given the chance.
Unions did move blue collar workers into the US middle class in the 50s and 60s but are useless now. They retire people in their 40s and 50s, push for insupportable fringe benefits, and no longer have the purpose they had 60 years ago.

Cable TV could charge pay-per-view for the potential carnage that may be just around the corner as a result!

As a fellow Buckeye...I agree with YOUR statement...

However, the Republicans are JUST AS GUILTY...and is why I am an INDEPENDENT!

I really do NOT like either party....As far as I'm concerned, they have BOTH sold us out for their OWN agendas!

Go Buckeyes!

Here's My Take On It...
"Union bosses have said that if EFCA becomes law, they will be able to double or triple their membership within a year."

That's what it's about ... they couldn't give a fig for the workers, they just want the dues!

And the more unions kill business, the more business needs government bailouts, which means government control over business.

Comrade Obama will unite the masses under his glorious banner of hope and change, whether they want it or not.

I went to a union meeting once.
they passed out their account papers. They had expenditures listed in account inventory codes. the misc. code accounted for over 40% od all expendures. In a normal business this misc code referes to money that cant be fit under any other code, such as money found on the floor. Wonder what they were spending all that money on?

they think
that Unions result in higher wages. these higher wages will stimulate the economy because people will have more to spend. All of that is true, if only that was all there is to consider. What these socialist wannabees always forget is that these wages must be paid with business earnings. Wages eat up earnings, cut profits, and dry up the motivation of the hard working, smart, energetic people in business who provide the jobs by creating and building businesses. When the union demands wages that sink the business, the government might bail it out with increased taxes on the union members, but only if it is a favored business. The government will let the unfavored businesses fail without acknowledging its culpibility. Do we really want the government redistrubiting wealth and picking economic winners and losers.

Unionize medical doctors
--
Throughout my professional lifetime, there have been spates of arrant idiocy leading certain small numbers of doctors to squall: "Let's uniionize!"

To which my rejoinder has always been: "So we can strike? Against whom? Our patients?"

The purpose for unionization has always been the improvement in the unionized worker's status through collective bargaining. Collective bargaining only works if the union - the collective - can deny its bargaining opponent the ability to carry on operations.

In other words, unionization only works if the employer cannot find alternatives to using union workers.

American workers who *refuse* the blessings of unionization only do so because they realize that their employers have alternatives to collective bargaining, and that as union members they would likely find themselves *LESS* well-off when their employers exercise those alternatives.

The clothing industry, for example, used to be big in New England and in the Mid-Atlantic states (like New Jersey). Down here in South Jersey, Hammonton used to have a bunch of clothing factories running.

Now the clothing factories of Hammonton are gone. Their buildings are as vacant and lifeless as the old Packard dealership near the railroad tracks.

The businesses moved to the Carolinas back in the '50s.

Why? Unions in New England and the Mid-Atlantic states priced labor costs out of the market. Employers either shut down altogether or fled.

I remember watching *Norma Rae* (1979), for which Sally Field won her first Oscar.

The Deep Southern factory in which her character worked voted for unionization.

I remember remarking: "Well, they're gonna be out of work in a couple of years."

Truth.

--

Unions are responsible for
the destruction of the U.S. Auto industry. Funny how Honda, Toyota, Hundai, Mercedes and BMW can build cars here, but GM, Ford and Chrysler cannot. I agree with an earlier post about Unions moving to other industries after killing off their current "host". Once the host dies, they have to move to another or die themselves. Their sole purpose is to enrich the Union, not help the members. All the things that have passed COngress over the last year have been about paying back supporters of the Democrat Party. period.
It is time for a revolt. The Declaration of Independence fully calls for the overthrow of oppressive, non-representative governments.

I can just see Nazi Pelosi

The government sponsored GPS you speak of is already in place on most new cars. It’s called Onstar.

The idea that union organizers will pressure employees to sign these proposed cards will probably come to pass, but no employee is required to sign the card except, perhaps, under threat of harm to life and limb at worst, and loss of employment at least.

While the employee who loses their job due to a failure to sign on to unionization may suffer in the short term, they will be far better off in the long term by steering clear of any unions. This comes from a 33 year member of the UAW who is facing an indefinite layoff after next week due to union rules.

Retired Greek
Surely you can see what a great idea a government monitored GPS in every car is. Why the cost alone would require another "stimulus" to pay for it. And of course we would need a massive federal agency to keep tabs on where we go, who we see, what we shop for etc. Just think of the possibilities! Visit a sporting goods store that sells ammunition? That's as good a reason as any to put you on a no-fly list. See a friend who's active in a citizen's militia? Time for an IRS audit for you. It's a Democrat's wet dream!!

Union Voting Card

Do you want to(Check appropriate block):

[ ] Unionize your company

[ ] Have your legs broken in 37 places

If "employee free choice" passes . . .
It would behoove ALL states to pass RIGHT TO WORK legislation. This would give any employee a true FREE CHOICE.

ELECTIONS + COERCION = LOSS OF FREEDOM
I think that this bill is the first step in America's eventual nosedive to complete loss of freedom. It will start with the unions and evetually small towns elections where the excuse will be "we're all her lets have a show of hands". The next thing you know election booth will be replaced where eveyone can see how you vote and then the intimidation will begin. Talk about disenfranchising the voter. But then I guess this is just the next step in "CHICAGO WAY" politics.

If "employee free choice" passes . . .
It would behoove ALL states to pass RIGHT TO WORK legislation. This would give any employee a true FREE CHOICE.

What it boils down to . . .
is CONTROL of the language and definitions therof. A good example is the "red" state, "blue" state definitions. It is a fact that the democRATS, being communist should have been given the "red" state label. Those so-called "journalists" most being communist themselves were successful in removing the red "stain" of communism from the democRAT states.
The environMENTALists change "jungle" to "rain forest", thereby giving the "jungle" a more palatable and less threatening appearance. "Swamps" are changed to "wetlands". Let's face it, "jungles" and "swamps" are nasty places in which human habitation is difficult if not impossible.
The bunny huggers have gained an advantage by changing a few words.
The "illegal immigration" proponents have changed "illegal alien" to "undocumented worker".
It is time to "take back" the language and call things as they are, not what those with an agenda want them to be.

FREE CHOICE ACT AKA SON OF WAGNER ACT

.....This ACT is the spawn of the WAGNER ACT which was FDR's "HOW TO BUY VOTES ACT" ...

.....The WAGNER ACT was a big step in FDRs plan to Blame Industry for the depression and to give workers through Labor Unions an advantage over the companies that employed them ...

.....This was the beginning of the end for America as an industrial power as the RUST BELT and present day Detroit attests ...

.....The power of the trade unions to coerse business into self destructive policies has put American Industry on life support ...now OBAMBI with his SON OF WAGNER ACT will pull the plug on what's left of the American economy ......COLOSSUS

Chicago also wants a 'tea party' now
And, maybe, just maybe other cities will be added. Then, we can all drink the tea while the losers and users drink the koolaid.

who is john gault?
More than Orwell, this whole obama thing smacks of "Atlas Shrugged". The beginning of the end of true free entrepreneurial spirit until we get up off our arse and march.

Obama wants GPS in each vehicle

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he wants to consider taxing motorists based on how many miles they drive rather than how much gasoline they burn — an idea that has angered drivers in some states where it has been proposed.

A tentative plan in Massachusetts to use GPS chips in vehicles to charge motorists by the mile has drawn complaints from drivers who say it's an Orwellian intrusion by government into the lives of citizens. Other motorists say it eliminates an incentive to drive more fuel-efficient cars since gas guzzlers will be taxed at the same rate as fuel sippers.

The system would require all cars and trucks be equipped with global satellite positioning technology, a transponder, a clock and other equipment to record how many miles a vehicle was driven, whether it was driven on highways or secondary roads, and even whether it was driven during peak traffic periods or off-peak hours."

Barack Obama wants to punish those who work with tolls and taxes, so that those who do not work can "Catch Up."

Robert Heinlein
was another author who was far ahead of his time. I rather like his idea that only those who had served an honorable term in the military would have the right to vote (and the military and honorable dischargees should be excluded from any voting restrictions in any case). Who better to determine our course than the people who have risked life and limb to defend our country and our Constitution. This would exclude me from voting, but frankly I think it's a great idea.

Orwellian
Welfare checks are now called tax cuts.

Pork spending is now called investing.

Coerced Collectivism is now called freedom.

Taxation without representation is now called patriotism.

Liberty is now called irresponsibility.

The abrogation of our Constitution is now called progress.

Yes, Orwell saw the modern day democrat party coming from a long way off. America needs to wake up. We could start by limiting the vote to people who get no money from the government. Anyone who gets public funds should be inelible to vote how those funds are distributed. Yes, that includes you Mom. Would that it were so, this country would be back on it's feet overnight.

Oligarchy
We are no longer a constitutional republic but are run by this Dem group of oligarchs. Soon the world will be run by this oligarchy unless we have a big Boston Butt pork and tea party, and a constitutional convention.

Unions & the Card Check Garbage
Unions are as unions do. While some unions operate in a reasonable manner, others do not. The organized crime influence in some unions and the predilection of some union thugs to resort to violence is well documented and inarguable. This EFCA card check criminality is just more of the same political influence buying that has always permeated the relationships between such unscrupulous unions and government.

The "Secret Ballot" is the only protection individuals, that don't care to be associated with unions, have to protect them from union retaliation. Truth is truth and isn't affected by propaganda.

The EFCA, card check Bill is a load of smelly, steaming, bovine pelosi.

Dwain Cleveland

This is unfair
If the unions arent' allowed to attract more members that means that the leadership is going to have to choose between supporting Dems or supporting their executive resort golf courses.

It'a totally unfair to ask them to make such a dificult decision.

Rich Not wealthy
Both are applicable to the present situation and the potential outcome. Orwell was a true visionary.

Silver Lion, you must be wealthy beyond
all imagination if you can just sit and watch this unfold. For the rest of us, we will have to fight our neighbors in the street to survive the coming catastrophe orchestrated by the One!

As to Orwell, this is much more like Animal Farm than 1984. The double-speak coming out of the Demonrats is astounding. If you take the literal meaning of the title of any legislation promoted by these traitors, the actual bill will do the exact opposite.

Joycey, unfortunately, both parties favor illegal immigration.

Years ago I wrote an opt ed
Years ago i wrote about a solution to the border problem. First thing is understanding the worst border problem. Unless the Mexican southern border is controlled to prevent the continual access of foreign drug cartels their will never be a soulution to the United States border issues. Put a United Nations base on the Mexican southern border, in the name of unity and peace democrats use your earmarks to fund the troops. This will serve the United States in amultitude of ways. International bases takes alot of support of the locals and would be a boost to the economy wherever it is placed, by having the United Nations involved the United States could not be accused of conolizing Mexico. The Mexican military would not be fighting the drug cartels all over the country, the local police would have better trained officers. Jobs in Mexico would also lead to less people having to cross the southern border of the United States looking for work. With the United States building the base, other countries and the United Nations could build hospitals and clinics for the indians being ignored by the government of Mexico. Military training by the United Nations in North America, but democrats do not want this solution because it would take away from their base, illegal aleins and their plight.

(Un)Fairness Doctrine
Obama has not abandon this idea. The Demorats are not stupid. They know that the public looks upon this an nothing more than censorship. Obama and the Demorats fully hope to instill the "Fairness" Doctrine through covert means such as "increasing minority ownership" in radio. They do this by restricting the number of radio stations an entity can own, and decreasing the duration of FCC radio licenses from 8 to 3 years. They are also pushing the idea of "localism" which is that the topics discussed must be related only to local issues. No more discussing national issues.

Seig Heil!! Comrades!

free societies
Free to work in a union shop or not? That is the question.

Join a union. Then try and get a job.

Join a union, get a job, try to rise in the ranks, change roles, etc.

Not so free any more! Union labor is the de facto employee of the union not the host company.

The inflexible nature of unions is such that they easily thug their way into an organization. However, if the best workers leave and form their own flexible company, the union organization loses.

Need any evidence? Look around.

Great, we need to kill more industries
Yes sir! Unions, fresh off of killing the auto industry need to obtain the ability to move on to what few industries we have here in the USA and kill them too. Make it impossible to compete here...hmmm. Didn't that send enough jobs to Bangalore as it is?

Card check? Why not appoint a Commissar at each company, to report on employees political leanings. Then we can get all the farmers into some, say, collective farms. Yes sir! A nice kolkhoz, we can number them too, just for the sake of convenience. Gather up all these unemployed into...labor camps. Yup.

Now we're talking. It's going to be great.

Silver Lions
Illegal immigration is fully supported and encouraged by the DEmocrats.

Business
I really fail to see what business it is what labor does. Government needs to keep to their own business and allow labor and employeers to do their own thing Collective barganing and strikes is the right od the people and government has no business getting involved at all. It is up to the individual workers to decide if they want to join a labor union or not. Yes, their are some advantages of belonging to a legitimate labor union but at the same time it is the individual workers decision if he or she wants to belong. It is not governments place to decide that for them.

Well...let's see.....
For sometime now....BOTH political parties have been playing the average taxpayer and citizen as suckers for years now....The Demoncrats with this new PORKZILLA bill and demographic change by fiat and massive immigration...and the Republicrats with illegal invaders pouring across our southern borders to save a buck on labor costs!

Card check will not matter in the long term....even union members will NOT like their freedoms eroded......but, we will see how it all plays out.

Pull up a chair, pop the top of a cold one, flavor the popcorn, and put your feet up. Unfolding events have the potential to become more entertaining than the new season of American Idol and Oprah!
