Gotcha Questions for Katie Couric (and Her Colleagues)

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Just as Charlie Gibson did in his interview with Sarah Palin, Katie Couric set out to humiliate the Republican vice-presidential candidate with a series of "gotcha" questions.

This tactic -- rarely employed with major liberal candidates -- could be used equally effectively against Couric, or most any other liberal member of the television news media. It would be highly instructive to have Couric asked questions in the same way in which she (and Gibson) asked questions of Palin.

For example:

Q: Critics of the war in Iraq argue that prior to the invasion of Iraq, America had never attacked a country that had no plans to attack it. How then do you explain the Korean War?

On my radio show, I have asked this question of some of the most celebrated names among liberal intellectuals, and they had little or nothing to say. One major editor simply admitted that he had little familiarity with that war. That is too bad because America invaded a country that had absolutely no intention, let alone ability, to attack the United States. The United States attacked Korea -- and sacrificed over 30,000 American lives -- solely in order to prevent Korea from becoming a totalitarian Communist state. We succeeded in the southern half, and over 50 years later, North Korea remains essentially a gigantic concentration camp.

Q: Many Americans believe that the most important way of understanding the effects of taxation on government revenues is the Laffer Curve. What is your opinion about this?

The Laffer Curve, which, unlike the "Bush Doctrine," is objectively definable, is perhaps the most important economic argument against tax increases -- because at a given point of increased taxation, the government will actually receive less tax revenue, not more. It would be quite surprising if many TV news people, including anchors, could define this economic theory, let alone intelligently discuss it.

Q: Is there any point in a woman's pregnancy at which you would call an abortion immoral?

Couric spent some time trying to show how immoral Palin's anti-abortion position is, since it even extends to cases of rape or incest. That was not necessarily unfair questioning. Even some who believe that human life begins at conception are prepared to allow abortions in the case of rape or incest. But it would be highly educational for Americans to see the tables reversed on pro-choice people: Are there any circumstances when a pro-choice person is prepared to make a moral judgment on killing a human fetus? How about during the third trimester (presuming, of course, that the pregnancy poses no threat to the life or health of the mother)? Or when an abortion is performed solely for convenience (for example, a married woman who was planning to start a new business or to take a long-planned trip abroad -- and the pregnancy therefore came at an inconvenient time)?

Some more possible questions:

Q: Members of the news media believe, correctly, that individuals running for political office, because of their potentially great impact on American life, should subject themselves to interview after interview about their views, values, personal life and knowledge base by often hostile members of the news media. But, the most powerful members of the news media, people who have more impact on American life than almost any politician in America, do not allow themselves to be interviewed about their views, values, personal life and knowledge of the issues. Why not?

Q: Which of the Federalist Papers do you think is most important? Why?

Q: In a question to Palin, you said that "women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes." If that is so, why don't employers only hire women whenever possible? What employer wouldn't want to save 23 percent for the same work? Is it possible that many women choose more flexible hours, want jobs with less travel and may choose less demanding work given their desire to be home more?

Q: On one of your CBS newscasts this year, you said: "A new study on teens and sexual harassment should give every parent pause. … In a study that appeared in the journal Child Development, 90 percent of teen girls say they've been harassed at least once." Did you read that report? If not, how do you justify reporting it on a national newscast in order to alarm "every parent"? The report defines sexism and sexual harassment as including "sexist comments about their academic abilities, sexist comments about their athletic abilities … demeaning gender-related comments, teasing based on their appearance, and unwanted physical contact." In other words, if a boy says to a girl, "You throw a ball like a girl!" that is deemed an instance of sexual harassment. Isn't that somewhat hysterical?

Q: What did you think of any articles in the most recent issues of Commentary, The Weekly Standard, National Review or any other conservative journal? Or do you only read liberal writing?

While every conservative pundit, commentator and talk show host I know of is regularly exposed to liberal thought, the opposite is not the case. It would be fascinating to learn how much Couric knows about how half the country thinks.

Gotcha!
I would love to see the tables turned and have Gibson and Couric questioned in this manner. It would be interesting to to hear their answers to the questions mentioned in Dennis' article...gotcha!

Those opposed to the war in Iraq
Here's a few questions for those opposed to the war in Iraq, and believe we should be in Afghanistan going after Bin Laden.

Question 1: Are you aware the World Trade Center was attacked by islamic terrorists in February of 1993?

Question 2: Do you believe our response, to the Feb 93 attack, capturing the man who planted the bomb, Ramzi Yusuf, and convicting him and sentencing him to life in prison, was an adequate response.?

Question 3: If you believe our response to the 93 bombing was adequate, how do you explain the towers comming down on Sept. 11th ?

Great column!
Keep up the GREAT work!

I wish
I wish the Rep. nominees were as quick on the uptake as Dennis is. I can't fault Palin so much as she is a newcomer to the national scene. McCain, however, has been at this for a long time and should be well versed and have plenty of ammo to come back at the libs. McCain needs to step up the rhetoric and come with guns a blazin tommorow night or he'll look like the LA Angels did tonight, pitiful.

Couric the Ignoramus
Do you think that Katie Couric came up with those questions all by herself? Just asking. It seems to me that she doesn't know much of anything, other than what she hears from all her leftist friends. You know that they all just talk to each other anyway, that's why they were all shocked when GW Bush won the second time. Talk about being out of touch!

The 2 Couric Questions are Pretty Easy
What do you read? Houston Chronicle,Time,Newsweek,New York Times,USA Today(only in an airport)

Supreme Court decisions you disagree with besides Roe v Wade? Bush v Gore,Dred Scott the other ones I can think of are OK and wait so is Roe v Wade.

I can answer so I can be VP.

From the debates and interviews the only conclusion is Sarah is Stupid. One answer was keep government out minute later she said we need more government regulation. And you wonder why you are losing.

Gotcha?
Asking someone what newspapers she reads is only a gotcha question if you're an uncurious, ignorant dolt.

Or if you're illiterate.

Ranger29 Reply #6
First. I agree that the McCain campaign is handling Sarah the wrong way and that is probably why she didn't do well in the interview.
Second. I think your missing Dennis's point on Korea. He is not comparing the Korean war to the war in Iraq. Rather he is stating that one of the arguments used against said war is that we never invaded a country that hadn't attacked us.
Third. I doubt that Dennis would have you on his show as he has more class than you, judging by the attitude/language in your post. I'm not trying to be offensive, just pointing out the fact.

Grand Inquisitors ...
that can't pass the quiz.

It is funny to think of Tom Brokaw, Mr. Williams, Ms. Couric, Ms. Ifill, Ms. Anne Curry, Ms. Zahn, Mr. Eric Roberts, Ms.Campbell Brown, Mr. Rick Sanchez, Mr.Tony Hill, even Ms. Amanpour, etc, being asked very rudimentary questions on geo-politics or foreign policy that haven’t been in the news recently.

Only Mr. Zakaria gives off the sense of skill that one would associate with capacity and competency.

For the rest, it would be a stumble bum fest.

Ranger29
Let's not forget that it was Bill Clinton that decided that "regime change" was necessary. I still don't think that your getting the point. As Dennis said, Korea didn't attack us nor did they have the ability to, same with Iraq. Korea was about stopping the commies and Iraq was about stopping countries that harbour terroist's who already showed the desire and the ability to harm us. Also, I'm no history buff but wasn't Korea one nation until the commies tried to take over and then we got involved and hence two countries now North and South?

gotcha? not really.
Kouric and Gibson did not ask hard questions. Those were pretty simply and direct questions that any number of Republican, Independents, and Democrats could answer in a heartbeat. It's a sad fact that Palin just wasn't prepared for the obvious.

Question to Curic.
Why did your Show Fail??
Can you be more specific??

Getting back to Katie re Supreme Court
RE: Bad Supreme Court decisions - Katie's inquiring mind wants to know.

The worst Supreme Court decisions are those that regard any human life as having less value than any other simply on the basis of appearance: color, age, etc. That would apply equally to blacks in the Dred Scott decision and to the very earliest stages of human life deemed less valuable in Roe vs. Wade.

Scientists know that we all began our lives at the moment of conception. Follow the DNA. If yours is like everyone else's you can trace it back to your moment of conception. Just remember DNA and Do Not Abort.

From the moment of conception until the moment we took our first breath, we needed the environmental protection of our mother's womb. Just remember it as your first EPA.

While I personally acknowledge the scientific fact that all new and unique human life begins at conception, I would fully support laws that allow a mother who has become pregnant by rape or incest to terminate her pregnancy if she so chooses.

Given the choice of supporting a bill that would protect 98% of babies destined for abortion which has a chance of passing or a bill that would protect 100% without any chance of passing, I will choose the former.

Dennis, Ask about the Armey Curve
Yes, that Dick Armey, retired member of the House, and an economist.

Similar to the Laffer Curve which posited declining tax revenues when taxation levels are excessive, the Armey Curve posits that excessive taxation depresses economic growth. A variety of studies have shown that the Armey Curve indeed exists. An interesting study (see http://www.house.gov/jec/growth/govtsize/govtsize.pdf) shows that GDP growth has steadily declined in this country as taxes have increased.

So, with bad economic conditions an Obama Tax Plan can only make matters worse. But say Obama defenders he will only tax the rich who can afford it. As it shows in the report this is the worst type of taxation and it will suppress growth more severely. The reason is obvious I think. If government takes money from the productive part of society and gives it to the unproductive part of society, then society as a whole will be less productive. The reason is that productive people use the money to innovate, which helps everyone.

Who is running anyway?
Dennis Prager doesn't seem to realize that Sarah Palin is running for vice president and not Katie Couric. Voters need to know how Palin handles tough questions. This is not going to happen if Ms Couric pitches the softballs Prager seems to believe constitute actual journalism. Come on Dennis, Sarah Palin is being hailed by you and others as nothing less than today's version of Ronald Reagan. And would not Reagan have made mincemeat of any journalist, no matter what the context?

remarkable historical ignorance
Let's see, does anyone remember about the Mexican-American War? Hint: prior to the Civil War.

How about the Spanish-American War? Hint: TR and the Rough Riders. The supression of the Filipino nationals after USN won the Battle of Manilla Bay (defeated the Spanish?)

The Boxer Rebellion? The China Marines?

How about the Marines in the banana republics between WWI and WWII?

For that matter, our involvement in WWI? Who attacked us? Do you know that for some time during the Great War, prior to our entrance, there was significant support for the German-Autrian-Hungarian-Ottoman side? Wilson was reelected partly because, "He kept us out of War!" and then promptly got us into it.

Our assistance (military forces, not just "aid") to the White Russians in their failure against the Bolshevicks during the Russian Revolution in 1917-1918?

In Korea, there were actually American forces on the ground in South Korea before the invasion from the North. They were there following the defeat of Japan, much as we occupied part of Europe for a time. US and ROK (S. Korean) forces were overrun and pushed back to the Pussan Perimiter before we started pushing back and regaining ground. Doesn't attacking our military forces count as "attacking us?" You can say the same about Vietnam and our forces being attacked. These are not really good examples, Dennis. Some of mine are better than Korea. Of course, many of your intended questionees probably never heard of most of these, and have heard of Korea.

For those interested in Korea, I would recommend TR Fehrenbach's _This Kind of War_, published in 1963.

Actually
I was imagining a conversation in which Palin is being interviewed by the likes of Couric or Gibson, and has the presence of mind when being asked a gotcha question to ask the question of th questioner. So, what do you think, Ms. Couric? Where in the Constitution does it give the power to the Supreme Court of Judicial Review - to decide the Constitutionality of Federal or State laws? Answer? Ms. Couric.? Where? Ms. Couric.? Oh, the answer: It doesn't. Its not in the constitution. The court just decided it had the power and has continued on since then. Do you know the case in which it said so - perhaps the most important decision the court ever made. The case that began 200 years of finding laws unconstintutional. Do you know the case? Just about the most important case in the history of the Supreme Court. Ms. Couric? Ok, I'll tell you. Marbury v. Madison. You remember now, don't you, Ms. Couric.? I thought you would.

History Lesson for John
Korea was a "kingdom" (something like Great Britain) that was subjected to French & other colonialism. Korea, Vietnam, Germany, and many others were subdued by Japan or Germany or Italy prior to WWII.

Korea & Vietnam were some of the last Asian countries abandoned by japanese AFTER WWII ended. They, like Germany et.al. were divided by the victors resulting in divided countries. In each case, except Germany, half of the country remained a protectorate and developed a democratic society. The other half was allowed to return to a feudal system that eventually was controlled by a socialistic/marxist structure.

Due to the cold war, Germany eventually evolved into a unified, democratically controlled country.

Korea and Vietnam wars started with comunist agression to unify the countries into marxist regimes. American involement was due to the protectorate status under the UN.

Although American soldiers were the predominant forces in Korea & Vietnam, UN forces (Incl Australia, Gemany, Canada, etc) were involved. Korean communists were defeated until the UN decided to negotiate a truce and divide the country at the 38th parrallel. Sout Korea has flourished under the protection of American and the UN (there are still some troops there from various non-communist countries).

I would add
As much a strict constructionist as Robert Bork is, and as much a revisionist decision Marbury v. Madison was, Bork concludes that, acknowledging its revisionist and power grabbing nature, it was necessary for the court to decide the way it did for the functioning of the government. Interesting. "Governments" consist of men and women. And someone said, broadly paraphased, (I don't recall who, so I am glad I am not being interviewed) that it does not matter what the constitution says if the people are corrupt and are not willing to live by it. Its up to us. Being up to us is what the phrase "self government" means. If we are not willing for "self government" we can always elect Barak Obama who will be willing to govern us as he sees fit.

korean history lesson
If anyone has a right to be unhappy it is the Koreans. They were unhappy with the US for allowing them to be thoughtlessly divided along the 38th parallel. They were unhappy with China for helping to drive back the Allied forces from North Korea. They were especially unhappy with Japan for having invaded them in the first place, and still without an official apology. And they are unhappy with a communist dictator who subjects his people to misery while he lives a life of ridiculous splendor.

Almost right, Dave.
The Russians declared war on Japan in the closing days of WWII, specifically to get their piece of the pie. If I recall correctly, the Kurile (sp?) Islands were lost to the Japanese following the Sino-Soviet war and they specifically wanted to reclaim them. Korea was divided, Russia to the north and USA to the south. The northern part of Korea was by far the richer and more industrialized prior to the Korean War. (This is a good example of the relative merits of communism and free society, that these positions have been radically reversed.) OBTW, I would never compare the Korean system prior to WWII to the British monarchy. Also, the Korean penisula has been conquered repeatedly by various people throughout history. It was considered the invader's route to China.

Germany was not united during the Cold War; one of the effects of the end of the Cold War was thre reunification of Germany. (Again the relative prosperity of West Germany compared to the East (communist) half demonstrate the relative merits of the systems in a dramatic fashion.) Europe was supposed to be temporarily partitioned among the Allied powers following the defeat of the Axis powers in WWII so that the Nazis would be removed from the governments and the proper authorities reestablished. The Russians held on to Eastern Europe, the countries they had overrun on their way to Germany, until the end of the Cold War. The were known as the "Warsaw Pact." Russia tried to effectively kick us out of Germany when they denied access to West Berlin. Truman stupidly responded with the Berlin Airlift. It was a remarkable feat by USAF, but gutless and stupid of Truman. The division of Germany lasted until the Berlin Wall came down in 1989.

Katie Couric and the Media
I have enjoyed Katie Couric in the past and felt she did a good job until her attempt to portray Gov. Palin in a derogatory way. I feel the media in general has lost its sense of purpose to present the facts on both sides of the issues in the presidential race.Instead they have backed Obama, failed to report the facts about his involvement in things Americans need to know in order to make a personal decision for the candidate of their choice, not the media's choice. They can vote for whoever they choose, but as citizens we all have that right and deserve to hear the truth about both candidates, not biased reports and personal opinions. This is America, we have the right to disagree on the issues, some of us are liberals and some of us are conservatives, but more important than being Republican or Democrat, we are all Americans and want the best for our country~May God bless America in the days ahead.

further, Dave
In Vietnam, the French tried to reestablish their colonial rule following WWII. This did not work out so well, as forces under Ho Chi Mihn defeated the French at Dien Bin Phu. Following this, the country was divided with free elections scheduled to determine the type of government. The North never held their election. The South established a representative form of government. We were there to help them defend themselves from the invasions from the north.

Easy questions
The Korean war was also a bad thing. Abortion = not always moral. What do I think of the articles in conservative media? They're total crap. Liberals do not fear questions like these. You'll have to come up with something better.

and
I heard Prager make this point on other shows but I don't see it in this article. i.e. ask Couric how many abortions she's had, the sex, the age of the fetuses, the father's name (just to not be sexist) and if she balked at answering any questions, make a big deal about it, and of course this would apply to all female and male reporters. Then there is asking what style of underpants any of them wear too, as well as their spouses and lovers. Just to be current, did Prager say that Keith Olberman made the report about "sitting up and taking notice" when Palin spoke on TV or was it someone else on MSNBC? Well how about making that comment to Couric, or Rosie O'Donnell? I wouldn't want to be the one to ask. I like my nose unbroken, and I generally don't wear protective gear.

Yet again, more pathetic victimology practiced by the poor republicns.
Whine, Whine, Whine

Whining.
I fully support the McCain-Palin ticket. I even like the smartness displayed, most times, by Dennis Prager. But this, this was painful to read. It actually feels "Michael Moore-ish," to me.

We don't need that.

How does the song go?
"Why is everyone picking on me".

Why the continual 'moan, whine, sulk, sulk, sniffel,'.

Ms. Palin may one day soon be the president of the USA. (What a terrifying thought). And, instead of the Republicans themselves testing her to her limits, they're whining "Why is everyone picking on me".

On the international stage Putin and others would eat her for breakfast. She can't then say, "Boo-hoo, they don't fight fair!"

There It Is, Prager -- LetsAllRelax
See, I told you so.

LetsAllRelax: I hope you are, because, hopefully, you ain't seen nothin', yet -- once we get Prager to stop whining.

Letsall
You remind me of the fella that stuck his right hand into the saw to show his friends how he lost his left hand.

What a simple fool you are!

Why bother?
Our biased, dopey, bigotted and incompetent media "personalities" for the most part can't be taken seriously. They are living posters of for our grossly failed education systems.
Arthur Laffer had great success with his thesis of diminishing returns by pointing out the obvious.
We have been conquered from within and it's too late to change that. We have taxed and regulated our economy towards a vicious cycle where business is presented with a choice of either moving to less hostile environments offshore or close down.
At present we have at least one bureaucrat for every productive citizen mostly in the services industry.
Hello Banana Republic!

Insane woman from WV
asking the question about reading material is loaded with baggage. The material itself, everything ever written in the material has to be defended by Sarah Palin if she identifies it as her reading material. She was wise to not be specific.

Gotcha Questions
Ask Katie Couric if her slow start in her current position should have led to her firing and ridicule?

Should the guys have sent hypocritical feminists to attack Katie for them?

What does Katie think about hateful attacks on Gov. Sarah Palin by women, fronting for the guys?

How about feminists acting like catty schoolgirls while undermining Gov. Palin with attacks against her mainly as a woman and as a mom?

How about Speaker Nancy Pelosi's schoolyard attacks against Hillary Clinton and Cong. Jane Harmon so that she could be the queen bee?

By the way, before the silliness of political correctness, wouldn't Steny Hoyer and Jane Harmon be the adults running the House instead of the aging hippies like Pelosi and Jack Murtha?

Should Hillary Clinton voters support McCain/Palin in 2008, so that they can vote for Hillary in 2012?

LSD35
Oh dear, here we go again.
The deep and meaningful level of discussion of another Townhall intellectual. "I don't have an answer to his points so I'll just insult him". Sounds like the style of Palin/Macpain.

LSD35, if the level of discussion is above what your brain can deal with then just stay away. (How's THAT!)

Give it up
Methinks doth protest too much!

Palin is like the lecturer who outlines a chapter from a book and gives a lecture. If you ask a question that goes beyond the basic outline you get gibberish or" I'll get back to ya."

What one reads or give a Supreme Court case you disagree with other than Roe are pretty softball. Palin lacks significant knowledge. No doubt she's learning some now, but its too little too late for the job she could inherit.

People understand this--which is why 6 of 10 rightly see her as unqualified.

History Lesson for Dave
The Koreans were never under French or any other European colonialism. They were under Japanese domination from 1905 through end of World War II. For centuries they have fought off the Chinese or Japanese to maintain their independence.

The worst part of Couric is she takes up oxygen that other people could use.

Korea
Enlighten me wobbie; why exactly did we invade Korea and am I safer for it? I spent a year in that hell hole and can tell you without a doubt it wasn't worth the life of one American let alone 30,000. Yes the ROK is a free nation compared to their neighbors to the north but how does that affect me? As far as I'm concerned they are just another bunch of ungratefull a$$-holes who regularly bite the hand which feeds them not to mention a source for cheap labor. How many American jobs have been lost because we "saved" South Korea? We lost Vietnam and America survived. Darfur is being overrun by ragheads and as of yet it hasn't affected me. At this point I am beginning to agree with Pat Bucannan when it comes to our foreign policy. Face it McCain is most likely gonna lose because he made a career of stabbing the base in the back. Yes I will hold my nose and vote for him because osama obama and his wife "little omarosa" will be a disaster for this country like we have never seen. Look at it this way we can pull ourselves out of this econmic slump by opening up some burka manufacturing mills if osama obama wins.

LetsAllRelax - Question for you?

“When we get in a tussle, we appeal to the Founding Fathers and the Constitution’s ratifiers to give direction. Some, like Justice Scalia, conclude that the original understanding must be followed and if we obey this rule, democracy is respected.

Others, like Justice Breyer, insist that sometimes the original understanding can take you only so far -- that on the truly big arguments, we have to take context, history, and the practical outcomes of a decision into account.

I have to side with Justice Breyer’s view of the Constitution -- that it is not a static but rather a living document and must be read in the context of an ever-changing world.”
Barack Obama, In his 2006 book 'The Audacity of Hope'.

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set," he said. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded."

wobbie
STHU You ain't nothing but a tofu eating lib.

Hi Retired Geek...
The Constitution is not carved in stone with just one interpretation. It is, as any human document, open to interpretation by it's language, by historical and cultural changes. It has to be flexible to allow for cultural evolution and growth of new ideas. Otherwise it is a dead piece of paper. See it as a guide to a path, not the path itself.

Just look confusion of the 'armed militia' and the 'right to bear arms' - does that include the right to own a T72 tank? An atomic bomb? A space-based laser?

(We could include the Bible and the Koran here, as there are those who believe there is only one interpretation - theirs :-)

What Bull
So are you saying that if Palin had been asked about the Korean War or the Laffer Curve she would have known the answers.

Politicians are often asked tough questions. Chris Wallace, the Late Tim Russert did it all of the time. So why should different rules apply to Sarah Palin and as an outsider the press had more responsibility to vet her.

If as you say, she got a raw deal what are you suggesting as an alternative. The infomercial she did with Sean Hanity or the absolutely silly piece william kristol had in the New York Times.

Putting aside this victimization narrative which is unbecoming of a candidiate for President or VP what was wrong with asking Sarah Palin which supreme court decision she did not like. and what was wrong with asking her what media she reads. That was a soft ball question kind of like the one I was asked by my local paper when I ran for school board. They wanted to know what books I had read lately and who were my favorite books. Thats a soft ball question if there ever was one and Palin well it was an ambush you know.

Lets really get down to it. This is nothing Sarah Palin could do including getting the conservative stuff wrong in her debate that would tarnish her image with the wing nuts. They just love her sarcastic tone and her aggressiveness too much to worry about the details.

Anyway the premise of your column is stupid. The press are not running for VP.

Doc...
You're missing my point. I'm not defending Obama at all. I'm saying that Palin SHOULD be pushed to her limits to see if she has the capabilities of (possibly) becoming president. Internation politics is a very tough and mean school.

If she, and her supporters, sulk because she had a 'biased' interview what are they going to do when she really gets poked in the eye? Drop the bomb? Invade the country that made her life difficult.

C'mon guys and gals, poke her yourself first to see if she will not disappoint you when push comes to shove.?

"Living Document"
A "living document" means nothing at all. If you can make the Constitution mean whatever you think it should mean given the current world, you have no foundation to build the country on, you have sand.

There are 2 mechanisms in place to change the Constitution. I you can't convince enough of your country to make the changes, tough. If you don't like it, unlike totalitarian regimes, you can always leave. If, for example, Europe is so superior to us, go there.

The dependability of contracts, of law in general, is one of the central properties of this free country which enables our peace and prosperity. Without it, you get corruption and poverty, if not 3rd world hellholes.

Gotcha
There is no such thing as a "gotcha" question for someone who is running to be vice-president, or there ought not to be. In effect, it is running for the presidency - nothing should be off limits, nothing should be considered "gotcha". We are talking about the same job here aren't we? I mean, if the presidency is a job an old schmo can do then fine, I agree, but it isn't, at least not in my book. Besides, she was asked what media she reads and she couldn't answer. How is that "gotcha"? It just proves what a poor intellect Couric was having to interview...

Eat them alive
If you had a liberal showing this level of confusion running for high office both the liberal and conservative press would eat the person alive. In Palin's case it is only the Liberal Media and a few conservatives with integrity like Parker, Will, Noonan and Krauthammer. Hanity, Prager, Sowell, Malkin, they don't have a shred of integity when it comes to conservative politicians. The Hanity interview with Palin was an infomercial.

Whew!
It's kind of sad that some people judge an intellect by the number of liberal publications one has read.

Politicians are often asked tough questions. Chris Wallace, the Late Tim Russert did it all of the time. So why should different rules apply to Sarah Palin and as an outsider the press had more responsibility to vet her.

Why? They sure spent no time vetting your pick for POTUS. So there lies the problem and the question at hand. Why does the MSM NOT treat all candidates equally? I think we all know why.

Take off the kid-gloves
The worst thing that could happen for American conservatives is for Palin to get to the White House and then show that she just doesn't have it to do the job.

So push her NOW.

Ask her:
What does she think of the China-Taiwan problem.
What does she think about possibly having to shake hands with Gadaffi, a declared terrorist and mass-murderer America tried to assassinate.
What does she think of the Cuba embargo and why is it then OK to trade with China and Vietnam.
What does she think of the military take-over in Thailand?
What does she think of the push to have Spanish as the main language in schools in South LA?

It should be the job of the conservatives to ask these questions. Not just whine and say,"Not fair. Not fair".

The top job on the world org chart

Is the President of the US. And certainly the VP job is in the 10 (note: the Yankee's manager job has dropped off the list).

I get harder question on a job interview than what Couric asked Palin.

Come on, where you get your news is a easy one.

As Govenour of Alaska I do read the The Anchorage Daily News and Petroleum News published out of Anchorage. For national News, I watch Fox.

That was easy. Palin does quite well when informed on a topic but fails when not prepared.

Which means the only news she reads is the Wasilla Warrior Hockey newsletter.

Couric should have asked "what effects did the two-line passing rule have in the NHL and should Wasilla adapt this rule as well".

Palin would have nailed that one!

Don Ju-an a la Lord Byron 8:11
Lord GOD!, ol sod, I about to CHOKE myself laughin when I read your masterpiece of inanity!

So it’s “Playing God” to say: “It is immoral and unconstitutional to take a human life”. But it is NOT “playing God” TO MURDER that life!

What a BRILLIANT piece of illogic, DJ! It is “immoral” to TELL a Female “thou shalt not kill”, but it is NOT immoral to ACTUALLY KILL a Female simply because she is parked in somebody else’s garage!

You simply enlarge my idea of the possible, DJ!

“As a Society we have clearly drawn the line at birth?” What Society YOU livin in, boy?
Every Roman Catholic, and most Protestants, a damn big portion of “society” KNOW BETTER!
Matter of FACT DJ, OUR WHOLE DAMN SOCIETY KNEW BETTER till just a GENERATION AGO!! And “Society” didn’t DECIDE! I didn’t vote on it, and neither did you.
Nine Idiot Aszholes “decided” to deliberately betray their sworn duty and MIS-Interpret the CONSTITUTION to get us here!
Might as well say “society” decided a black man was only 3/5ths human AND WE SHOULD STICK WITH IT!

Mick

It's Over, Katie
Katie Couric is in her own little NYC liberal bubble. Actually, in reality she is a bubblehead who should have stayed with her feel-good morning show. She pales in comparison to respected broadcasters like Huntley and Brinkley and Eric Severeid.

After Dan Rather most of us viewers realize they all have agendas--pretty faces and handsome people who nightly regurgitate the latest liberal line.

I believe they are dinosaurs who don't really know that their day is over. Their monopoly of the news is over. The Internet and talk radio are able to explore issues in depth and are not confined to one half-hour quick run-downs. TV news anchors only parrot the liberal zeitgeist and most knowledgeable viewers recognize the game and switch the channel.

Not only were Couric's & Gibson's

"gotcha" questions, the interviews were EDITED to put Palin in the worst possible light...

Nice huh? And they call that "journalism????

And what about Gibson's accusation of "hubris" when Palin said she didn't blink when McCain asked her to run as VP?

Gibson's snarky accusation is what took unabashed hubris!

I'm waiting for someone to ask Gibson if he's stopped beating his wife yet, and Couric if she's stopped dating engaged and married men.

Another Lying Neocon....
Dennis Prager is particularly odious in that he masquerades as a moralist, but loves to use lies as half-truths. Here is a doozy from this column:

"Critics of the war in Iraq argue that prior to the invasion of Iraq, America had never attacked a country that had no plans to attack it."

Huh? Which critics is Mr. Prager referring to? I read an awful lot every day of the week, and I am yet to come across an anti-war commentator who makes this claim. Now, maybe you can google this concept and come up with someone who has made such a nitwit claim, but to say "critics of the Iraq war argue" means that this is a commonly-heard refrain.

Actually, most anti-war critics, including myself and most libertarians, are fully aware that the US has attacked countries that are not a threat to us many times in our history. That is precisely the problem.

Usually, Prager's distortions, to give him credit, are a little more subtle than this.

DJ the Constitutional Scholar
DJ I would just LOVE to hear your cogent reasoning as to exactly HOW a Human Female at 22 Weeks Gestation, and quite capable of LIVING outside the womb, is in ANY WAY DIFFERENT from any other female outside the womb, EXCEPT FOR PHYSICAL LOCATION!

If that is the guts of your argument remind me not to let you swallow my diamond ring!
Might as well argue if we have joint ownership of Season Tickets to the Skins you have the right to BURN them simply because they are in YOUR wallet!

I say Brain Wave and Heart beat means it’s a Human Female with its OWN CONSTITUTIONAL rights to “Life”, “Liberty” and “Property” and to be secure in its person from “unreasonable search and seizure”, DJ. And I’m willing to entertain the idea there is something analogous to Brain and Heart activity at a molecular level from conception, maybe even an analog of Thought, Self-awareness, Worship even.

If you are not, fine, but the burden of proof shifts to YOU to PROVE it is NOT a Human Being with CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF ITS OWN when he or she has Human Heart Beat and Brain Waves.
At bottom you are granting one Human Female OWNERSHIP of the LIFE of ANOTHER HUMAN Female simply on the basis of Spacial Location! The owning of Human Flesh went out in 1864, dude!

JMO51
"Lets really get down to it. This is nothing Sarah Palin could do including getting the conservative stuff wrong in her debate that would tarnish her image with the wing nuts. They just love her sarcastic tone and her aggressiveness too much to worry about the details."

Maybe. Evidence does not support. Conversatives were understandably downhearted about her right before the VP debate.

The converse of your proposition, however, is supportable by the evidence:
There is nothing Sarah Palin could do short of converting to 24-carat liberalism that would change her image with the Obamabots.

Cute, Dennie,
but we're not contemplating putting Couric's finger on the nuclear button.
Do you really want a believer in End of Days to have access...especially when that person is willing to pass responsibility to God for any and all catastrophic actions? We already know what that will bring.

Arrogance
It's the arrogance with which these reporters interrogate (not interview) conservative candidates. Texaschuck calls Sarah an uncurious dolt for not being able to answer a question about what she reads. (While he reads Time (liberal), Newsweek (liberal), NYT (leftist)and USA Today (a real feat of intellectualism)! I understood why she didn't answer that question on two levels: one, she hasn't been trained like other Washington pols to have a ready answer that changes the subject, and she is being told to watch every word she says to the media, so she didn't have a graceful way of deflecting the question. Two, she maybe wanted to preserve some of her privacy (the horror!). She still hasn't adjusted to the idea that the press thinks they are allowed to turn her life inside out and scorn her in national news. As for Texaschuck, I read National Review, Weekly Standard, Commentary, Entertainment Weekly, and American Spectator. I don't read a paper because they are all liberal rags. I get my news and other commentary from the internet and sites like this. Since Time and Newsweek aren't deeply intellectual rags, I conclude that you are an incurious dolt.

What I know about Palin
She is the governor of Alaska. She had 2 chances to let us know her better but--- one with Charles Gibson and one with Katie. Both times I didn't hear her answer any questions she was asked. She didn't answer Charles because
the questions were all sexist because he's a man and she's a woman. She didn't answer Katie
because the questions were all sexist because
Katie's a woman and she's a woman. What excuse can we expect next time?

ya betcha
gosh darnit Katie, asking me what newspaper I read is a gotcha question. ya betcha (wink wink)

History lesson for Sir Michael
You said: Russia tried to effectively kick us out of Germany when they denied access to West Berlin. Truman stupidly responded with the Berlin Airlift. It was a remarkable feat by USAF, but gutless and stupid of Truman. The division of Germany lasted until the Berlin Wall came down in 1989.

As one who was awarded the WWII Occupation Medal for helping keep West Berlin open (USAF), I am curious to know why you think the Airlift was gutless and stupid. Symbols are totemic. The fact that a free Berlin existed inside of communist East Germany was a shining ray of hope to the Germans who were separated from their families and living under a totalitarian government. Many died trying to get over the Berlin Wall to freedom. What would have been gutless was leaving the Berliners behind to live in totalitarian misery. Is there nothing worth fighting for? My tour in Berlin as a Russian linguist was a very satisfying contribution to world freedom. And yours was?

TV Double Standard
Even Bill O'Reilly, who has the reputation of being tough, relented on his relestless probing of Barack Obama and challenged him to a one-on-one basketball game! This is the "fair and balanced" kind of reporting we see on a daily basis. Every TV reporter is scared silly to touch the third rail of criticizing a black man. But you can be sure that Russia's Putin has no such reservation. If Obama is elected president and things screw up, as they always do, we will have the wonderful sight nightly of TV anchors going into all kinds of contortions not to be perceived as critizing a black liberal. Of course, taking whacks at conservative blacks like Clarence Thomas is permitted and encouraged.

"Fear da 'Cuda!"

"'Cuda Phobic"! The unreasoning stark naked terror of Sarah Palin. DJ, Pablo, J-Mo, ModiMark should all get tested.

Shhh! Don't let them hear this, but the spittle on their chins does tend to make one wonder, if Palin is such a lightweight non-entity, why she scares the sheite out of em so much that they react with such visceral and irrational massive attacks. If she is the fly they say, why the MOAB as a Flyswatter? One would have thought they would "get" that and wonders why it doesn't occur to them. Like I say, we done crossed over into Pathology Land here.

Tired of the gotchas
Good article. While I would disagree with most of Gov. Palin’s positions on the issues, However the way the media had gone after her is nothing less that shameful. Anyone can be asked gotcha questions and be made to look foolish. I suspect part of the reason that there is such a reaction to Palin is that win or lose this November she is positioned to run for president either in 2008 or 2012. Now that scares the hell out of a lot of people myself included. However that is no excuse for behaving badly and resorting to character assignation.

BTW the right and conservatives are not one bit better. We have lost the ability to have civil discourse and we all lose as result.

"Q: Critics of the war in Iraq argue that prior to the invasion of Iraq, America had never attacked a country that had no plans to attack it. How then do you explain the Korean War?

No, the US had never attacked another country that hadn't acted belligerently threatening to the US. Very very simple. We went to war with approval of the UN and to help out the South Koreans who were being AGGRESSIVELY attacked. True, we feared the spread of communism and what we thought was right. Bush's war is spreading radicalism and allowing the cancer of the Taliban to spread to the point where one of the lead military commanders in
Afghanistan says we can't defeat the Taliban. Palin was asked simple questions and she muffed it big time, like not even knowing a major newspaper, and that is very frightening.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/09/60minutes/main592 330.shtml

Palin vs. The Man Child
I have no qualms about voting for Sarah Palin as president right now. She believes in the right to life, the right to drill for oil, and the right of all Americans to be free.

On the other hand, Obama believes in the right to tax us all into poverty, the right to grant mortgages to people who do not have the wherewithal to pay them back, and the right to kill babies before they're born--soon to be followed by the right to off the paralyzed, the old, and inconvenient.

Maybe if SARAH had ANSWERED!
She does the "Sarah Dance" around EVERY QUESTION, and when CALLED ON IT, BLAMES THE MEDIA!
POOR, POOR SARAH!

Then GO back to Alaska..
"Alaska First, Alaska Always"
Your ANTI-AMERICAN Secession buddies are waiting.

HA! HA! HA!

Huh
Where does this irrational paranoia on the right come from? Couric asked some rather obvious questions of Palin. She did not specify that Palin name liberal or mainstream news sources she reads. She asked the rather innocent, but interesting, question as to what her sources of news is. Candidates get asked about their abortion views all the time. What lead to the follow up with Palin was that her answer was a designed obfuscation that avoided actually giving a position.

I don't know where the base of the first question is supposed to come from. Vietnam is another example of a war that did not start from our being attacked. The Korean war, like the first Gulf war was a case of turning back an invasion of South Korea by North Korea (the division dating back to where our troops ended up in World War II. What is supposed to be a gotcha about that?

The Laffer curve in the abstract is about as useless an argument as possible. It says there are times that raising taxes raises revenue, and other times when it lowers revenue, and by itself says nothing to tell when either is the case. How am I got by pointing that out?

Didn't Couric allow filming of a medical procedure on her? She doesn't seem to be someone who has hidden her personal life. (I don't watch her show so I am not positive about this one).

It is the fantasy of everyone not in politics, that if they were they would wow everybody with their unanswerable arguments. What silliness.

Couric = Obama What's new
I would like to see Obama asked these questions and be able to watch his expressions and see how long it takes him to answer.

1.Why did you pressure Iraq to delay troop withdrawls?
2.Who is Mohammed Al-Churbaji?
3.What is your connections to ACORN?
4.Why does Fannie Mae CEO call you & the democrats FAMILY?
5.Why won’t you produce your LEGAL birth certificate?

We know the answers.

"'Cuda Phobia" alert!
Only two things will bring the commiqrs ...
(see my The Big Mick blog on TH for the etymology of my semantically correct usage for the “terminological inexactitude” “liberal” and a debunking of the disingenuous and outmoded Left-Right Linear Political Spectrum Model which is the source of its falsehood.)

...the only two things besides any Coulter Column that will bring out the “‘Cuda Phobics” like this are 1. Homosexuality. 2. Abortion.

So here they are. What I think is the biggest hoot are those trying to justify Flat(ulent) Earth Isolationism in the Context of Abortion. Ok to kill female babies inside their mommas but not Adult Sandnazis in THEIR back yard! What a moral cognitive dissonance! Borderline Skitzo!

Well armed doves are still “sitting birds” as 911 demonstrated (And the French throughout History). The Tommy Lee Jones
“Fugitive” approach worked so well after Trade Center 1. These guys DO know Lucky Lindy landed in Paris and Isolationism hasn’t been a viable Foreign Policy sense then, don’t they?

All they got to do is leave me and mine the hell alone. If they won’t I want ALL THEIR stuff blown up and burned and all of THEM DEAD in THEIR front yard.

Anything else is an INVITATION to our Enemies to ATTACK us. Since I figure one of us is more valuable then ALL of them, I don’t see ALLOWING them to do that has ANY cost/benefit to US! Kill them all, kill them now, kill them over there and leave me and mine the hell alone.

"WHAT is your favorite color?" -- "Blue"
"Right, off you go..."

"STOP...What is your name?" -- "Sarah Palin"
"WHAT is your quest?" -- "To become VP"
"WHAT...is the capital of Assyria?"

irrational paranoia?
Please - give me a break on your claim that Couric was just asking simple questions. She pounded Palin on the followups. She would never, ever, pull that BS on Biden or Nobama.

Bottom line, no one watches her show anyhow so in the end it does not matter.

But the double standard in the liberal media, as shown by Charlie and Katie, is obvious to anyone with common sense.

Prager and Abortion
I don't understand the morality of being anti abortion but willing to flush the rest of Christianity down the drain. The sure magnitude of lying in this campaign by the republicans is just out of control. Prager along with most of the rw base think it's perfectly fine to torture someone, or to go to war for oil. Iraq is listed as the worst place in the world to be a child,or a woman, and they have seen the disappearance of a million Christians. One of the leading republicans is now Eric Cantor, lauded here at T.H. and who thinks no illegal should get hospital care. There is no consistency. Either your a christian all the time or not. The Pope, is anti-abortion, and he's anti-Iraq preemptive war and torture. It flows with moral logic.

The laughter curve
Does anyone know that the referenced "Laffer curve" is only a theoretical curve and has absolutely no scientific basis?

It is a theoretical solution to the question of taxes vs. production. It is of course true in one sense, if you tax 100% there will be nothing left over for production and growth. But no one in the economic community can tell you where and when the two lines cross.

I don't know of anyone that said we haven't invaded other countries without being invaded. The question should be what countries have we invaded that didn't attack the United States?

Taft
As my good friend Steve Strehle used to say over cold chilli dogs at Deitrick Dinning Hall Va Tech (Steve went on to get 2 Docs-one from Dallas Theo one from Basil Switz--had to teach himself German to get the lectures, taught himself Medieval French German Latin to read the ORIGINAL Manuscripts) Steve, he would say, referring to folks like you, Taft:
"Most people don't understand the Scriptures well enough to even venture an opinion."

What I think, Taft is that what you know about Christian Doctrine couldn't fill a thimble.

What I think is that you need to read up on Augustine's Doctrine of Just War, and C.S. Lewis on the Disobedience of Pacifism. Quickest way to make sure there ARE no Pacifist Countries is to BE a Pacifist Country!

What I think is that Jesus says if you want to help the poor you give HALF YOUR STUFF--NOT SOMEBODY ELSE'S! You want a Criminal Reconquista Invader to have health care YOU BUY IT FOR HIM OUT OF YOUR PAYCHECK. Doing it out of somebody else's is THEFT! Just a reminder "don't steal" is one of the Big 10!

Your "moral logic" ain't-Taft, and ain't worth a damn. More UHF4-CH4.

By the way, when's the last time somebody tried to Bomb the Vatican? I'd call the Pope's position "Cheap Grace", easy enough when nobody is trying to bomb YOU! And if the Pope's into Health Care for Reconquistas let him pay for it, ya'll got the coin. Half, Jesus says, right?!

Par-for-course behaviour of Couric
1999, she was known for casting blame on Focus On The Family and other Christian organisations (despite of her having no evidence whatsoever) for the Matthew Shepard murder.

Another factoid: she got the morning show job due to NBC's double-standard firing of Deb Norville (who wished to take maternity leave, as she was expecting)--though Couric was even further along. IMO, due to Couric's being an obvious low-talent groat vs Norville's attempting to do right.

You're totally right, but Taft isn't gonna get it. Liberal 'Christianity' (there's an oxymoron) throws principal and pragmatic analysis out the window and suggests that Christians be governed only by compassion. Fighting evil is never acceptable because it's a fight.

Couric and Gibson would do better
on these questions than Palin imho.

Anyone disagree?

Didn't think so.

Palin
She didnt have good interviews w either Gibson or Curic , that doesnt make her a dope. If her and Mccain lose i hope she spends the next few yrs improving her world knowledge and comes back in 2012. i would vote for in a second if only because she has no ties to Washington.

Fighting the war in Iraq, 100,000 dead, child prostitutes in Syria, a million dead or displaced Christians and 4 million displaced Iraqis wasn't fighting evil. Let's look reality in the face and see things for what they are.

BigMick, of course you are right

on what brings the far left to TH, abortion and same-sex sodomy. The left are ardent supporters of both. But the most ardent supporter of keeping abortion legal and having the government endorse same-sex sodomy is Satan. He sees every abortion as a victory and every act of same-sex sodomy as a victory.

I realize most of the left do not understand who they are serving when they support such vile practices, but they cannot say they were not told when they face their Creator's judgment.

Katie Couric was advised that her career was in such serious jeopardy that she is slated to lose her job at the end of the elections. All the more reason for her to scurry around and find obscure, meaningless questions to get a 'gotcha' moment.

Where is Hal Doofus, the John Murtha of TH, these days? Oh, wait! Is he representing the military in secretive talks with Iran?

Why won't Obama let his grades and papers be released by Occidental College, Columbia and Harvard? What is there to hide?

Palin Should Have Answers
These were very easy questions that anyone should have been able to answer. Palin was given the kid glove treatment and still failed.I'm wondering why a few people in our party are still defending her. What happened to accountability? If someone can't do the job (and she can't for so many reasons) then they need to be replaced. Stop pounding the mainstram media as they have given Palin every break and then some. It is now we Republicans that want her head, not the media or Dems (who love what Palin has done to our party). Wake up her extremist views just don't cut it on mainstreet. She will have a long career in right wing talk radio(also way out of touch with mainstreet) but, her days in politics are numbered.

Who did you support in the GOP primary?

"and quite capable of LIVING outside the womb..."

One..exactly one at 22 weeks has survived. As for your question, that's easy Roe V. Wade and even Scalia won't support that idea the a fetus is a person with the protections of the Constitution.

KATIE COURIC,LOVES THE RADICAL LIBERALS,SO DOES GIBSON.THEY ARE THE ONES THAT NEED TO BE ASKED THE QUESTIONS,ARE THEY COMMUNIST??

To Big Mick

You say, “I won't listen to you if you won't talk to me the way I say even if we both know you are right!" It is, at bottom, a complete disregard for the Truth ….”

Well Big Mick we actually agree on that. It’s easy to have a conversation with some one who thinks and talks like you. The real challenge is to have a civil discussion with someone who thinks radically different than you without letting it get personal.

That's where the civility comes in. We can and should attack stupid ideas but not the person. The other guy probably thinks it is your ideas that are stupid. Often the truth is somewhere between the two.

J.Riolo http://psychjourney_blogs.typepad.com/your_advocate_online /

Pathetic
There are really two issues here.

First, none of these questions were gotcha questions. This is a person who want to be Vice President of the most powerful nation in the history of the world! earth. She is anxious to place herself one heart beat away from being the most powerful single person in the history of the world.

The people of the US have a right to see what she knows and doesn't know. For someone with ambitions like that, there is no such thing as a gotcha question. Prager's article and those who agree with it are showing exactly how low their expectations are of this woman.

Secondly, the Couric questions were the opposite of gotcha questions. They were softballs! "What newspaper or magazines do you read?" Exactly how hard is that! "Can you name a Supreme COurt decision besides Roe V. Wade?" That's too tough for someone who wants to be president!

Again, if these are gotcha questions your expectations for your politicians are pathetically low.

Great Read M. Prager
Only one problem. The dumbed-down education most recieve is most evident in replies. They know nothing about how their RIGHTS have been protected and were they get the RIGHT to spew their uneducated speil. Keep up the GOOD WORK> Some are educated enough to seek the TRUTH. GREAT ARTICLE!!!!!!!

Palin
Why are all the libs so afraid of Sarah Palin? Of all the candidates she is the only one with executive experience. You might want to ask Couric & Gibson why they are so in the tank for a candidate who: (1) Has no experience; (2) has very sorid associates i.e. Bill Ayers, terrorist, Tony Resko, criminal, ACORN who is part and parcel of our economic debacle; (Acorn has funded Obama's campaign as well as Freddie & Fannie (3) promises change - but have you seen his tax plan? (go to http://www.rightmarch.com). You might want to ask Couric & Gibson why they want socialism in this country instead of the free democracy our founding fathers outlined? Why do you - or don't you know what socialism, Marxism is? Why do you want it for your children and grandchilren? There are those ignorant people who will follow a Pied Piper right down to their own destruction. Sad.

Pablo St Illegal
The only things discredited are ACORN Obama and his Obamatards!

One More Thing
Prager begins his rather shameful article by telling us what liberals think. His premise is that liberals think teh Iraq war was a mistake becuase the US has never attacked a nation that didn't have plans to attack us first.

The problem is that there are few, if any, liberals who think that. The US not only went to war in Korea, but with Spain, Russia, Panama, Grenada, and a few other nations who didn't have plans to attack the US. And that doesn't include wars due to various treaty obligations.

Prager and his ilk simply could not function if they didn't begin by telling their gullible readers what liberals think, and then arguing against it.

My Creator's judgement
Will be different than your Creator. My Creator is a good natured being full of compassion for all of the creations in the universe.

My Creator also likes chocolate fudge ice cream. Or so I hear from my pastor.

Jacy asked
"Why are all the libs so afraid of Sarah Palin?

Well, Lacey, I would say they are actually afraid of having another president who picks unqualified people to help him run the country?

Am I to guess that your approval of McCain's choice of Palin would make you also happy to see a defense department and cabinet staffed by Jimmy Buffet, Britney Spears, or, if it's "executive experience" that you think is the most important qualification, what about Jesse Ventura? He certainly has even more executive experience than Palin and he thrives on getting the populist vote of people who are frightened by good education and brains in a candidate.

Jack
Prager is doing his conservative job by telling his reader that all democrats and liberals are clones of each other. If he was to get more complicated than that, nobody would read his columns.

On a blog like this everything is supposed to be expressed in terms of generalities, slogans, and echo-chamber memes.

Sarah Palin's "executive experience" is a perfect example - it was selected as a sound bite when she was chosen, put into the conservative ether, and now every right winger who can spell will echo it back over and over. Of course, the term is next to meaningless, as it can apply equally to the guy who manages the local dairy Queen as it can to the woman who works for our little city hall and plans the summer art fairs.

in general
Apparently, asking someone what they read for information about current events is only a "gotcha" question when it's asked of Sarah Palin.

I don't personally know anybody who couldn't answer that question in about 3 seconds.

Todd
Asking follow up questions when someone tries to dodge answering a question is the job of a serious journalist. Palin only appeared to be pounded because she was woefully unprepared.

To take one example, one of the follow up questions that Palin was "pounded" by was the request to name a supreme court decision besides Roe that she disagreed with. But this was part of matching questions that were asked to Palin and Biden in the lead up to the debate. Biden knocked the question out of the park. (He chose the limitations placed by the court on the Violence Against Women Act that he sponsored). Palin had recently written (or more likely had a staffer write) a column criticizing a supreme court ruling with regard to the Valdez affair. So it is not like there are no cases she has come out against.

But look at the incredible bias of asking the candidates the same questions and expecting Palin to be able to answer them too. (But I think the bigger bias is on the part of Palin supporters who think this is unfair.)

Michael
Throughout Chinese history, China has usually been invaded from the north toward Mongolia by various peoples--the Xiongnu, the Nuzhen, the Mongols, the Manchu, not from Korea. The exception to that was 1931 when Japan did it from Korea. Look at the various walls (The Great Wall), the Qin, Han, Ming walls are all directed toward the Gobi and Mongolia where the invasions came from. Korea is sealed off by the Ming Wall by the wall putting Manchuria and thus Korea outside the wall, the Qin and Han wall has a section the runs north-south from western North Korea into Liaoning along the Yellow Sea and across the Yalu Jiang, but the wall is directed toward the barbarians living on the steppe on the edge of the Gobi, not Korea.

The Soviet declaration of war on Japan On August 8, 1945 was in fact to gain Japanese territory and a greater influence on Japan's surrender than the atomic bombs. The Soviets got the southern Kurils, southern Sakhalin, northern Korea, Manchukuo, and control of the CER. It wanted Hokkaido as well, but stiff resistance in the Kuril operation and possible violent opposition from the Americans dashed its hopes for getting its hands on Hokkaido.

As for Vietnam, well, there was supposed to be elections in both North and South in 1956, but when it became clear that Ho Chi Min's side was going to win--the US-backed south and the US withdrew from them. You may also note that the conflict was not just with the north, but pro-communist southerners as well.

last for now
I suspect what Palin and Prager are really upset about is that the format didn't provide Palin with a chance to express her usual I'm better-than-you-are disdain for people who like to travel, don't hunt and fish, and don't demean their listeners by winking at them.

liberals not afraid of palin
in fact it has turned out in our favor.

50% of americans (in a poll taken after the debate ) still think she is not ready to be president.

from Palin's Fla rally
" Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy.""

Goog going, guys. This is sure to win your boy alot of votes. In fact, on Saturday she actually got at least one conservative to call for Obama's death.

Are you Kidding?
Gotcha! If Palin could not answer these few questions then she does not and should not be running for the second highest office of this Republic. This article is pandering at it's worst!

true-independent
Is this blog full of 'generalities, slogans and echo-chamber memes' on the same footing as Obama's lack of answers when asked what he would have to cut from his trillion dollar new give-away programs in light of the financial problems we face?

Several times Obama has said that some things he wants, which things are never specified, might have to be put off for ten years. Has the number of years in a presidental term or the number of terms allowed changed? Or, are we changing from an elected president and some of us are not aware of it yet?

Why won't Obama agree to the release of his records and writings from Occidental College, Columbia, or Harvard? As an unknown, he wrote two autobiographical pieces, one over 400 pages, to make his life the proverbial open book, why should anything be hidden now? What is there to hide?

Why are questions about Obama's associates not acceptable? William Ayres is neither ancient history or a changed man, despite now being characterized as a pillar of society. On 9/12 he expressed his wish that the Weathermen's bombings had done more. Antoin Rezko has yet to be sentenced and is working a deal on his sentence with prosecutors. Jeremiah Wright threw Obama away before Obama disavowed him and his rhetoric.

If you are truly independent, you are interested in these matters, aren't you?

John
"Also, I'm no history buff but wasn't Korea one nation until the commies tried to take over and then we got involved and hence two countries now North and South?"

Korea was a protectorate of China, but wars with China in 1894-1895 and the Russians in 1904-1905, led to Japan annexing Korea in 1910.

At the end of World War II, Soviet forces took northern Korea while American forces took the south. Anti-Japanese leader Kim Il Song (who was a member of an anti-Japanese group tied to the CCP) and Syngman Rhee who was a pro-Korean independence leader were basically installed by the Allies--the Soviets installed Kim and the Americans installed Rhee. And that is why there is a DPRK in the north and a ROK in the south today.

Who is to blame
I'm adamantly opposed to Obama, but I can't see anyone to blame for the Couric interview other than Palin. Were there some gotcha questions? Maybe so, but even if there were (and I've listened to the entire interview), they were mild ones.

For god's sake I could have fielded most of those questions better than Palin did. IMO she froze.

Thank goodness she held her own in the Biden debate. Now the strategy must be to keep Palin on the campaign trail is weak Red states to energize the Base and generating campaign donations. But please keep her away from mainstream media interviews. Their lying in wait for her like sharks. And she's a minnow.

Summers
It seems you are asking me if not answering a question at all is on the same footing as answering it with gibberish, lame cover-ups, ignorance, and then whining that you were san-bagged.

No, I don't think they're the same at all. I may have wished that Obama had answered the question, but I remain convinced that, if he can't, then when elected he will hire educated, experienced, brilliant people who can -- and they won't make their decision based on what they can see from their back porch.

JOhnR22
I agree. But the problem for me is that minnows have no place in politics and government, which is rough and tough and in which people don't get to cry that they're being treated rudely.

Sir Michael
In late June of 1950, there were no US troops fighting along side the ROK Army. That would not happen until July when a small detachment from the 24th Infantry was sent over from Japan--see Battle of Osan. There were US troops in southern Korea right after the Japanese surrender but by 1950, they were long gone. Like in any country there were a small number of US military personnel in Korea, but the US wouldn't engage the DPRK forces until July--they coming over from Japan and those are the ones that got pushed into the Pusan Perimeter.

Summers
I would guess that most conservatives were not 100% pleased with Palin's performance with Couric regardless of the kind of questions asked.

I would also say that based on her performance at the debate, she is a quick study.

Additionally, one of the things people are looking for is which of the candidates has the best judgment and who would put the best people around them to manage the White House. Clearly, Palin is significantly better in this area than either Senator Obama or Senator Biden. They're lack of judgment is appalling regardless of how well they can speak and answer questions.

Kind Regards as always.

jestak
Sounds to me like he "thought" about it extensively. at to the point that he came up[ with his won GOTCHA question. Sounds like you are the one NOT THINKING because you don't like the questions or answers

Don't Blame Katie
Dennis Prager insults his reading audiences intelligence by blaming CBS anchor Katie Couric for Sarah Palin's beyond poor showing in the interviews with Couric.

Some Obama voters like me, do not question Palin's intellect because we know she is a smart, fierce woman and we are shocked by what the McCain campaign has made her.

She was so scared of making a mistake she could not even answer what newspapers she reads or naming one supreme court case she would like to see overturned besides Roe. She, one of the most promising Republican women in years has allowed herself to become a punchline.

Because of the McCain campaign not Katie Couric, a good part of this country would rather see Tina Fey be VP then her.

Your logic has been got
You still fail to explain how "What newspapers do you read" and "What Supreme court cases do you disagree with" are gotcha questions? You also forgot to mention that Couric asked Biden the same Supreme Court question (to which he referred to the United States v. Morrison ruling, although he did not mention it by its specific name). If you really think asking someone "What is The Laffer Curve" and "What papers do you read" are at all the same you are delusional.

Obama knows he can't answer for two reasons. One if he throws an issue out he alienates a potential voter base. Two he has no intention of backing off any of his wish list.
We should be electing brilliance not the man that would simply hire brilliance.

ModMark
"Can Palin even grasp what is going on? Could she even have an intelligent conversation with somebody like Greenspan? Palin calling Obama a terrorist certainly moved McCain to my naughty list."

Considering she has more executive experience and has held actual real world jobs I would have to say yes. Furthermore you can't have an intelligent conversation about the economic mess or even grasp it yourself. You hold Palin to standards that you, yourself cannot achieve. You proved that yesterday.

libs and these questions
I find it funny that we actually have liberals here answering the questions. Let me think, they have the internet at their tips with hours to answer. Im hoping you can come up with something.

Ill be most liberals that answered didn't even know what the laffer curve was? I didn't by name myself, but I have talked about it on these boards in theory before. Last time we lowered taxes, listening Pablo?, our revenues rose. Now, that would mean we are on the higher end of that curve. Lowering taxes again and again until revenues fall would be the appropriate thing to do no?

Then we have DJ the liberatarian speaking more nonsense.

"The portfolio of rights that it protects is for the most part procedural; virtually all of the BoR is about procedure."

Yes a procedure on how they cannot remove our right to bear arms or our right to free speech etc etc. My gosh ignorance is coming oozing from your ears.

"At a certain point along the Laffer curve, tax revenues are maximized. This is where the government should set its tax burden. Less taxes do not always mean more revenue. You could reduce the tax burden to zero, and under Laffer's theories, you would maximize economic output. Problem is, you don't have any money left to run the government. "

Now, you as a "liberatarian" shouldn't be feeling that the government should take the most amount of money possible from you. Wouldn't you want maximum economic output while giving the government just enough money to continue? I thought that was a stance of liberatarians lol.

Better be sure to plug one ear DJ, you don't want a draft in your head haha.

So really it takes a puppet to win as president for you. Who cares about anything right? BTW, who is Obama putting in his cabinet, if you are so sure he will be having those brilliant people surrounding him?

That statement you made just showed that you will vote democrat no matter what. Doesn't matter what the candidate knows or doesn't know. Doesn't matter if he has any experience or not. Doesn't matter what his ideological beliefs are either. You will just HOPE that he will put smarter people around him. What a laughable argument.

Akagi the non US citizen
Ahhh....Akagi the north korean troll has come upon his area of expertise. Or, at least his north korean handlers area of knowledge. Notice how he interjected the month/day/hour/minute of the US presence when Mr. Prager made no claims whatsoever about this. Mr Prager was simply making a point. But Akagi the north korean had gotten the story from his handlers and his grandparents and he could not resist flashing with his brilliant almost first hand knowledge of the korean war.
Akagi, the North Korean troll. Pay him no mind folks he is just tryin to show off.

this has got to be a joke!
Because Palin can't articulate where she gets her news, nor why AK being near Russia gives her foreign policy experience...this somehow means that our journalists should have to answer "real" questions??? Since when? It's a journalist's job to ASK questions, not answer them (in Prager's defense, he would have no way of knowing that as he's not a journalist).

And by the way, I'm sure Couric, Gibson, Williams, Brokaw, Matthews, Maddow, Olberman, Gregory, Mitchell, the late Russert, Barbara Walters, Anderson Cooper, Lauer, and probably even Larry King could answer ALL those questions.

Howsabout asking them to O'Reilly, Hannity, Limburger, et al, and watch them squirm.

If Couric had asked Palin the "gotcha" question of what her favorite color was I'm sure she'd have flubbed that one, too. Pathetic!

Get a life. When you say something like this:

"And by the way, I'm sure Couric, Gibson, Williams, Brokaw, Matthews, Maddow, Olberman, Gregory, Mitchell, the late Russert, Barbara Walters, Anderson Cooper, Lauer, and probably even Larry King could answer ALL those questions.

It just makes you look like an idiot. Anything else you have to say is overlooked because of the wholly incompetent statement you made.

BTW...you should research all she has to do with the National Guard up there because she is on Russia's border. You should learn that stuff before you come screaming on a conservative site.

No! Lowering taxes until the revenues fall is exactly what happened. It dramatically increased the national debt.

Got any idea how much additional money came into the treasury because of the tax cuts?

Over a two year period revenues rose from the low in 2003 of $1.8 trillion to a high in 2005 of $2.15 trillion.

So about $315 billion dollars came in. Was that from the tax cuts? Not all of it. The economy was in a normal rebound.

Look at the graph.

How much did the tax cuts cost?

$1.8 trillion dollars over 10 years

Ok, so lets see here...normal rebound? From what? Our GDP wasn't in decline after the first quarter of 2001. going from 2.15 from 1.8 is an increase of nearly 20%. Was inflation that high? Let me check..........nope. Sorry.. our revenues went up. You lead me to the taxprof, to prove my point? That graph does exactly what I said it did. lol

You mention how the cuts increased our debt. Just how did that happen if our revenues went up? Spending went up! thats what caused our debt.
