Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Overly influenced by certain big-name green groups, misled by their own ideology and perhaps also a bit dazzled by the unlikely stardom of failed-politician-turned-climate-hero Al Gore, Democrats on Capitol Hill seem bent on self-destruction when it comes to climate change.

At issue is palatable opposition to continuing plans for expensive and job-killing cap-and-trade legislation among members of the Democratic Party's most loyal core constituency: African-Americans.

A nationwide poll exclusively of African-Americans nationwide just released by the National Center for Public Policy Research found that 76 percent of African-Americans want action on climate change delayed until after the economy recovers.

The 800 African-Americans surveyed were overwhelmingly Democrat: 80 percent self-identified as Democrats, 67 percent self-reported being "strong" Democrats. Only 4 percent self-identified as Republican.

Yet despite the association of the climate change issue with the Democratic Party and President Barack Obama -- who, according to a CNN/Essence Magazine/Opinion Research Corp. poll released June 25, still receives the support of 96 percent of the African-American community -- black Americans leave the fold in droves when it comes to climate change.

Among the poll's findings:

- 76% of African-Americans want Congress to make economic recovery its top priority, even if it delays action on climate change;

- 38% believe job losses resulting from climate change legislation would fall heaviest on the African-American community. Only 7% believe job losses would fall heaviest on Hispanics and only 2% believe they would fall heaviest on whites;

- 56% believe Washington policymakers have failed to adequately take into account the economic and quality of life concerns of the African-American community when formulating climate change policy;

- 52% of respondents aren't willing to pay anything more for either gasoline or electricity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 73% are unwilling to pay more than 50 cents more for a gallon of gas and 76% are unwilling to pay more than $50 more per year for electricity to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions; Continued...

"These wouldn't have the power they have if it wasn't for the Democratic Reps from Black districts - this isn't "blaming" blacks for them, just stating a fact." Politics is driven by money. Obviously Reid and Polesi can generate more fundraising dollars vs black reps, so therefore they will have a front seat at the table.

"If you take the official positions of the parties then I think you could make an argument that GOP policies would help the Black Community." Official positions included, as a black person who lived through both Dem and Repub administrations at state and local levels, neither ideology is superior. I'm all for capitalism, but the concept of trickle down economics is no better than government handouts. Stupid drug laws and prison for profit aren't superior official positions. I give you credit on the school voucher thing, but outside of that I see no difference. Conservatives need to take some responsibility for the lack of blacks in their party. Many republican elections have been strategically won by building up white resentment amongst certain parts of the electorate. Paul Weyrich and Karl Rove were masters at such strategy.

"Blaming blacks for the likes of Reid and Pelosi is just silly. They are representatives of liberal white districts and don't have to depend on black votes to get elected." These wouldn't have the power they have if it wasn't for the Democratic Reps from Black districts - this isn't "blaming" blacks for them, just stating a fact.

"The GOP is no better than the DNC. All blacks are doing is choosing what they believe is the lesser of two evils." Unfortunately, you're correct. If you take the official positions of the parties then I think you could make an argument that GOP policies would help the Black Community, but neither party is driven by principles. Those are just the things they tell us around election time.

"If a black republican goes against the masses, he/she is blasted by conservatives. Colin Powell and Micheal Steele are primary examples" Gotta say you're wrong on this one - I think for most their opposition to the two you mention has much more to do with their positions on issues than their skin color. Kind of like most on Townhall dislike Kathleen Parker and Peggy Noonan, or David Frum. It's an elitist vs. average person thing, IMO, not black vs white.
