Chicago: More Murders in 18 Days Than Yearly Total of Eight States

Chicago has experienced 21 homicides so far this September. The following states all had fewer homicides in the 12 months of 2011 (the most recent year statistics are available) than Chicago has had in the 18 days of September so far:

5. South Dakota (15)

5. Wyoming (15)

7. New Hampshire (16)

8. Montana (18)

Honorable Mention: These states all had fewer than 53 homicides in 2011, which is equal to the number in Chicago during the month of August in 2013: Maine (25), Alaska (29), Idaho (32), Delaware (41), Iowa (44), and Utah (51).

In 2012, 532 people were murdered in Chicago, which is more than the total homicides of every state in 2011 except for California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
