Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- A $14 trillion economy hangs by a thread composed of (a) a comically cynical, pitchfork-wielding Congress, (b) a hopelessly understaffed, stumbling Obama administration, and (c) $165 million.

That's $165 million in bonus money handed out to AIG debt manipulators who may be the only ones who know how to defuse the bomb they themselves built. Now, in the scheme of things, $165 million is a rounding error. It amounts to less than 1/18,500 of the $3.1 trillion federal budget. It's less than one-tenth of 1 percent of the bailout money given to AIG alone. If Bill Gates were to pay these AIG bonuses every year for the next 100 years, he'd still be left with more than half his personal fortune.

For this we are going to poison the well for any further financial rescues, face the prospect of letting AIG go under (which would make the Lehman Brothers collapse look trivial) and risk a run on the entire world financial system?

And there is such a thing as law. The way to break a contract legally is Chapter 11. Short of that, a contract is a contract. The AIG bonuses were agreed to before the government takeover and are perfectly legal. Is the rule now that when public anger is kindled, Congress summarily cancels contracts?

Even worse are the clever schemes now being cooked up in Congress to retrieve the money by means of some retroactive confiscatory tax. The common law is pretty clear about the impermissibility of ex post facto legislation and bills of attainder. They also happen to be specifically prohibited by the Constitution. We're going to overturn that for $165 million?

Nor has the president behaved much better. He too has been out there trying to lead the mob. But it's a losing game. His own congressional Democrats will out-demagogue him and heap the blame on the hapless Timothy Geithner.

Geithner has been particularly maladroit in handling this issue. But the reason he didn't give the bonuses much attention is because he's got far better things to do -- namely, work out a rescue plan for a dysfunctional credit system that is holding back any chance of recovery

It is time for the president to state the obvious: This recession is not caused by excessive executive compensation in government-controlled companies. The economy has been sinking because of a lack of credit, stemming from a general lack of confidence, stemming from the lack of a plan to detoxify the major lending institutions, mainly the banks, which, to paraphrase Willie Sutton, is where the money used to be.

Obama has been strangely passive about this single greatest threat to the country. In his address to Congress and his budget, he's been far more interested in his grand program for reshaping the American social contract in health care, energy and education.

Obama delegates to Geithner plans for a bailout -- and Geithner (thus far) delivers nothing. Obama delegates to Nancy Pelosi and her congressional grandees the writing of all things fiscal -- and gets a $787 billion stimulus package that is a wish list of liberal social spending, followed by a $410 billion omnibus spending bill festooned with pork and political paybacks.

That bill, we now discover, contains, among other depth charges, a Teamster-supported provision inserted by Sen. Byron Dorgan that terminates a Bush-era demonstration project to allow some Mexican trucks onto American highways, as required under NAFTA.

If you thought the AIG hysteria was a display of populist cynicism directed at a relative triviality, consider this: There are more than 6.5 million trucks in the United States. The program Congress terminated allowed 97 Mexican trucks to roam among them. Ninety-seven! Shutting them out not only undermines NAFTA. It caused Mexico to retaliate with tariffs on 90 goods affecting $2.4 billion in U.S. trade coming out of 40 states.

The very last thing we need now is American protectionism. It is guaranteed to start a world trade war. A deeply wounded world economy needs two things to recover: (1) vigorous U.S. government action to loosen credit by detoxifying the zombie banks and insolvent insurers, and (2) avoidance of a trade war.

Free trade is the one area where the world indisputably turns to Washington for leadership. What does it see? Grandstanding, parochialism, petty payoffs to truckers and a rush to mindless populism. Over what? Over 97 Mexican trucks -- and bonus money that comes to what the Yankees are paying for CC Sabathia's left arm.

Trivialities of a CAT-5 Hurricane
Tropical Storm Barack builds over Bahamas and the Feds said it couldn’t happen. Crossing the Florida Peninsula, it became a category I candidate and the Feds said don’t worry this never happened before. Then, the media hipped the storm that was finally recognized a threat in warm waters and landfall. Approaching New Orleans the age and capabilities of the levee system were questioned. Still, the Feds said don’t worry but a state of emergency was declared. “You’re on your own!” As the storm passed landfall the Feds said we dodged a bullet and Michael D. Brown commended for a job well done. Can anyone see the trivialities of Katrina and contrast them to the trivialities of the U.S. economy? Or, is it just another hurricane and just another economic cycle.

If they take the AIG bonuses
they have found a new way to break the constitution and steal from the private sector- even after making a "contract" they DO NOT HONOR as a government.
As far as I'm concerned three wrongs don't make a single thing right.
GET THE HECK OFF THE BONUSES THEY ARE NOT YOURS CONGRESS AND YOU HAVE TO WRITE ANOTHER ILLEGAL LAW TO STEAL THEM.
Go44amned criminals.

No Leadership
We focus on the trivial because Obama is so lacking as a leader. It shouldn't shock anyone either. The man has never led anything in his life. No reason to think he'll begin now.

We must hope the country wakes up before the next presidential election. Eight years of this guy might actually finish us off. Never thought it possible.

Precisely!
Are you a surgeon too?! Incredibly well written!

Nero is fiddling whilst Rome is aflame! Like Nero, the narcissism in DC, which plagues more than several, I fear will be the demise of us all.

Last point... Regardless of one's opinion about Geithner, he needs staff. This point alone substantiates that they (Congress and BO) are just not looking at the ball, they are not even in the parking lot of the ballfield.

If the People FEAR the government ...
that is TYRANNY.

If the Government fears the PEOPLE that is LIBERTY.

I'd say PEOPLE more fear the government than the government fears the people.

Well Said
The bonuses were done under legally binding contracts. Plus, we don't know the full details on who is receiving those bonuses and why. From what I hear, the compensation of people in that industry is made up of small salaries with bonus incentives. Now the logic of paying for non-performance is certainly debatable but the fact is that these bonuses fall under contractually legal obligations and the government has absolutely no business altering them or taxing them out of existence.

Thanks, Charles
Great column. Keep trying to wake them up out there, Charles.

But in all honesty, I think the hour is very late. I think we've barely seen the beginning of what's coming.

The only safe place will be found within a real and right relationship with the God of the Bible. Yes, we have to vote with wisdom. Yes, we have to fight the good fight of standing up for our freedoms. Yes, we have to make good daily decisions and teach our children well. But the first thing we have to do is get right with God and seek His will for our lives.

Each person has to decide for themselves is this is the truth or not.

I decided 17 years ago and it's the best thing I ever did.

Trivial - Tip of the IceBerg
Well said! As always! The incompetence of this entire travesty is sad and frightening for our nation. Not only are the Democrates of the "Kids in the Candy Store" mentality, they will leave no candy for our kids! Worse, they have made no decent decisions! They are destroying our nation, our national security, our very freedoms, and in their ignorance, their futures too. The real crooks are still leading our finance committees - Frank Dodd - why are they not being prosecuted for fraud, conflict of interest, incompetence, and grandstanding using our finances Fannie/Freddie to win an election, while destroying over 1/2 of all of our retirements just to get into the White House. And once in, they do not know what to do!
sparklestheclown here - still sick of this!

Charley K's Justification.
Well Mr Krauthammer, wonder's never cease-I never thought I'd see the day when you would provide justification for our so-called best and brightest financial folks.
That $165 million that you so expertly refer to as less that one-tenth of one percent of the bailout money given to AIG alone, was negotiated down from $450 million by Timmy Giethner before he was "trust" into the position he has now, back when he was just a lowly tax cheat.
Charley too bad you didn't channel the Ghost of Christmas past and go back to Christmases 2006 and 2007 when bonus monies was bonus monies and gas prices were high and our best and brightest were sitting pretty, getting huge bonuses to afford the gas in their Ferrari's and Bentleys, back when Franklyn Raines ran Fannie Mae and made, how much? and won't be giving back any of that ran into the ground Fannie Mae money any time soon, and Bear Sterns and Lehman Brothers were giving out hot-assed million dollar bonuses so that their best and brightest can afford the real estate in the Hamptons and Oyster Bay.
Our best and brightest at their best, and thank you Charles for justifying their existance.
Oh! by the way Charles we're in an economic downturn, you must have noticed, and the government are bailing out our best and brightest, I wonder why?

The O-bots are coming!
The O-bots are coming!
larry22...thanks for the tip and link, I tried it and there are events all year in my area in support of B.O., it's as if he's still campaigning. They want supporters out in my community to even draft "those that might've supported his opponent.." Huh? I'm afraid if we don't drink the Kool-Aid some bad things will come our way.... they will have union muscle forcing and coercing those that disagree with their mindset. stay awake America, and stay vigilant..I will always have the FREEDOM to think and choose as I want, and will make MY decisions for what I BELIEVE is best for this country...I'm not some paranoid conspiracy nut but people are stocking up on ammo for a reason, and we must defend our Constitution and Freedoms...is it a coincidence that the further our Country strays away from the principles our Founding Fathers (not framers) set the worse shape our Country gets?

TX Gal
Go back to the Obama brown shirt site and enter "Find An Event Near You" near the top. Then, enter your zip code. It is an active site to get sheeps to organize the community to sell Obama's continuous pork spending follies at the ACORN...er...local level.

"Pledge to Obama
If all of this is not enough, check out Obama's own website looking for lackeys to pledge TO HIM, not the country, the constitution or the flag but to him. To take a pledge and then go out into neighborhoods and get others to pledge. His own little brown shirts. Only some who have already been approached say the shirts are blue.

Be frightened folks, be very frightened."

Charlene, the link you gave looks like a site that was set up before the election in order for people to get involved in helping Obama get elected, IF that is something they wanted to do. I'm sure the McCain campaign also used volunteers for fundraising and just to go out and ask people to vote for him. I didn't see ANYTHING on that site about going out and asking anyone to make any kind of PLEDGE to Obama.

Sorry, but you're just spreading more paranoia.

Krauthammer
with all his brilliance still just wants an invitation to the White House. He'll never rock the boat and remember, he supports Geithner. Krauthammer is just another RINO who wants to be included at the dinner parties.

Obama Is A Fraud
He is simply POSING as a president.

He is not a natural born US citizen and may not even be a US citizen. He may be an illegal alien.

Why doesn't produce his HI birth certificate for authentication if only to shut us up?
Answer: It doesn't exist.

Charles - Great article, keep em comming
Hopefully one or more of the libs can explain why these bloviating hyppocrits in congress are so concerned about the wannabe homeowners NOT breaking their mortgage contracts and are themselves more than willing to break the AIG employees legally binding remuneration contracts.

While at it, explain why when you ask a member of congress for assistance they demand some sort of Privacy Release Form before proceeding and now comes buglemouth Schumer before every available TV camera demanding the release of the bonus employees names, addresses and etc.
Where are the privacy release forms required by the congress.

There was some hope for change this past Nov but look who got re-elected - Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and others to numerous to mention that have less than sterling performance records.

Sad, Sad, Sad.

Letter to Ohio Atty Genrl ... Game on!
To: Attorney General Richard Cordray

Dear Sir:

I write to you concerning the legitimacy of Mr. Barrack Obama / Barry Soetoro to serve as POTUS.

1. The U.S. President has to be a Natural Born Citizen, meaning born in this country to parents that are both US citizens. Mr. Obama's father was in this country on a student visa from Kenya, a British Colony at that time. Mr. Obama, Sr was never a US citizen.

2. The State of HI, statute 338, allows foreign born children of Hawaiian residents to get a Hawaiian BC. His paternal grandmother in Kenya and the Ambassador of Kenya made statements that he was born in Kenya.

3. The image Obama has posted on the Internet was not a valid BC, but a Short Version Certification of Live Birth. The COLB does not name a hospital, a doctor, or have signatures or a seal of HI Health Dept. This document is usually given to parties that don't have a proper hospital BC.

4. The State of HI has sealed his BC and only stated that there is a document on file and has refused to provide information as to whether it is a certificate for a foreign born child of a resident, is a proper hospital birth certificate, or a short version COLB.

5. Even if Obama had citizenship status until age 5, he lost it when he immigrated to Indonesia and acquired Indonesian citizenship. Indonesia doesn't allow dual citizenship and Obama reaffirmed his Indonesian citizenship; therefore, relinquishing his US citizenship when he traveled using an Indonesian passport as an adult.

6. Mr. Obama has sealed all of his vital records and reportedly spent over $800,000 on an army of attorneys to keep his records sealed.

7. In spite of Obama's claims that all cases were debunked, no single case was heard on the merits.

It is imperative that you as Attorney General of Ohio act on the citizens’ behalf and convene a grand jury to investigate this matter immediately.

Sincerely,
Susan E LeGear

smart folks...
The smartest people have the most opposite opinions on this bailout-investment-budget crisis...this education-health-energy "initiative" for change we can believe in.

Bill Clinton, for one, approves of what Obama is doing, from A to Z.

And what was Jimmy Carter doing in the White House the other day?

Larry Summers continues to serve and not resign on principle. No one has resigned on principle--except maybe Judd Gregg.

The idea that the Dems cannot run an economy was shattered by Clinton. Phil Gramm and Company were wrong--Bill Clinton and Company were right.

We're all on the edge of our seats. Personally, I've not felt yet the pain of this variegated crisis we face. What could possibly touch the cut in pay I took--going from public school teacher (wealth) to hourly store stocker (poverty)? As Heidegger, said, we make our Decisions...

More of the same
Just more idiocy from "Foggy Bottom" and "The One".
I'm sure there's still more to come yet I continue to pray that it will soon end before we suffer complete destruction.
How much more will it take before the Sheeple finally wake up and destroy this beast?

A True Patriot / Oath Keeper
So many good people confuse loyalty and devotion to our great Nation with obedience and servility to our Government. Our government is NOT the Nation, the Citizens are the Nation, and our Government has served us poorly for many years.

A true Patriot is always suspicious of our wonderful elected leaders and appointed Mandarins, because power corrupts. The people we have running this country should NOT be trusted, should be held to high standards, and should be scrutinized in every way. Our nation's survival does not depend on the citizenry being compliant to the government's will, but on the will of the people to insist on our government doing the right thing - following the Concepts and Principals of the Constitution. Our Fearless Leader has declared the Constitution a "Flawed document, in need of repair".

If that is not a call for vigilance on our part, I don't know what would be.
I took the oath to defend our Constitution 27 years ago, and I still consider myself bound to that oath until the day I die.

I am with you. "an armed man is a citizen, a disarmed man is a subject to be ruled"

I read your posts. They are excellent.

I do call my reps., the presidential comment line, and send faxes.

And I do pray.

Just wanted to know if there was something else I could do.

Keep posting and THANKS for answering.

I just took apart 50 tea bags . I took them apart because the actual TEA in the bag can be a toxic substance and gets stuck in the Federal Post Office. It does not reach the Reps. you send them to.But believe me...,Congress is aware that the Fed. Post Office is being inundated with thousands of tea bags.

So...,if you're mailing teabags ,just send the string and the little paper tab. That way your reps get the message delivered right to their offices.

Nancy Armstrong / Oathkeeper
My name is Nancy Armstrong. I am now a 100% disabled veteran but served my country in the United States Navy from 1979-1992. When I left the USN I was an ET1 (SW), a second generation sailor.

I swore to defend the Flag, the US Constitution and the country. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend all of these against the current government and president. I am sickened more each and every day as I watch the government doing end runs around our Constitution, one I believe in more today than ever.

I am reminded that our president said the US Constitution is no longer applicable to the country. It is my utter belief that the US Constitution is as viable today as ever. It is the very document that dictates the laws and values we live by.

Today I am willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with all to defend the country and our Constitution because it is a part of who I am.

It is important that we remind those currently serving that we have their "back".... I am proud to add my name to the Oath Keepers....

Great
Very good article. We have a light weight administration sprinkled with incompetent, liars and thieves. What can I say?

This all rests at the feet of
oslimeball obama and geithner and they more than deserve their herbert and marion sandler signs and the execution thereof.

Man Bites Dog OR Conyers Cracks ACORN

Mr. Conyers, Michigan Democrat and fierce partisan, suggested a congressional probe after scathing testimony about the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) during a hearing on various voting issues related to the 2008 presidential election.
Mr. Conyers called the accusations “a pretty serious matter.”

“I think that it would be something that would be worth our time,” he said during Thursday’s hearing. “We’ve never had one person representing ACORN before the committee. … I think in all fairness we ought to really examine it.”

The testimony by Pittsburgh lawyer Heather Heidelbaugh accused the nonprofit group of violating tax, campaign-finance and other laws by, among other things, sharing with the Barack Obama campaign a list of the Democrat’s maxed-out campaign donors so ACORN could use it to solicit them for a get-out-the-vote drive.

Sorry. I didn't catch your post...

What can be done about it???

The ONLY thing that can be done is for the government to STOP THE INSANE SPENDING.

Please read my posts from last night and early this morning.

Call AND write your representatives.

Protest at tea parties or wherever.

And, participate in the March on Washington, if the plans get off of the ground.

We must take back our country.

Most importantly, pray.

Lastly, have a great weekend.

democrats paid multi-millions in bonuses
Numerous democrats blocked attempts to confront the impending banking system crash. Bush, McCain and other Republicans attempted to get the democrat controlled congress to take protective actions.

As this video shows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs

democrats responded in two ways. Inside government, democrats blocked efforts to confront the mortgage crisis. Outside government, democrats personally profited from the mortgage crisis.

democrats raked in multi-million dollar paydays like, Jamie Gorelick, by using their connections with the DNC to help Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae cook their books. By the way, Jamie Gorelick is the one who established the "wall of separation" between the CIA and the FBI making the 9/11 terrorist attacks possible.

http://inzax.us/2008/09/17/jamie-gorelick-clinton-crony/

"Gorelick also served on the board of directors of Fannie Mae, and was part of the accounting cook booking scheme which has resulted in hundreds of billions of dollars in losses and is now owned by the taxpayer...Gorelick, a democrat politician, pocketed $26 million from her Fannie Mae affiliation."

Frank Raines, another democrat, raked in $90 million in bogus bonus pay to cook the books for democrats and ACORN:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/09/how_close _are_raines_and_obama.html

"He (Frank Raines) was accused of manipulating earnings statements so he could be paid bonuses to which he was not entitled. In July, Mr. Raines was interviewed by Anita Huslin, a business reporter for the Washington Post."

These two democrats should refund the American taxpayers! Or, have their ill-gotten bonuses taxed 90%, too!

Dr. k - another 5 *
Please keep the pressure on until we get some positive results from this incompetent administration.

How long is it going to take for the president to drop the celebrity tour and settle down to take care of PRESIDENTIAL business. You know, little things like removing the current Treasury Secretary and putting someone in charge who doesn't have 'tax cheat' written across his forehead...someone who might actually encourage other well-qualified individuals to come on board to help America find its way out of this rapidly deteriorating situation. Of course, making mention on the Leno Show as to why anyone would want to be a banker when they could be an engineer doesn't seem to me to be a good way to attract quality members of the banking industry to his administration. Sounds rather like the Kerry comment about being punished by ending up in Iraq!!! Believe me, I would take 500 of the servicemen and women serving over there now and sit them in the Halls of Congress after tossing the current lot out on the street!!! I would feel much more confident in the future of our country!!!

Time For A Legal&Proper Tax Rebellion !

While Obama,Schumer ,Frank and The Democrats Use The Chump Change $165 Million A.I.G. Bonus Issue as a Diversionary Scam , BIG BUCKS American Taxpayers force confiscated A.I.G. Bailout Money is going to Foreigner Banks.
France's Societe Generale and Germany's Deutsche Bank each got $12 Billion,Barclays Bank Of Britain got $8.5 Billion ,Switzerland's UBS got $5 Billion.

Then , Obama,Dodd ,McCain Campaign Money Greasers , Goldman Sachs got $12.9 Billion.

These Clowns must think We,American Taxpayers are The Great Unwashed ,who they can CON and Distract from This Bailout RIP OFF !

Up The Rebellion !

UNTIL they go after the bonuses of ALL
Fannie & Freddie, Merrill Lynch, BOA, Goldman Sachs ei al - AND the political contributions from ALL businesses who received 1$ of bailout or stimulus money, they should not try to focus on only AIG. Consider also Barney Frank's 'friend' at Fannie - Obama's financial advisor, Frankin Raines, also a Fannie (or Freddie) exec, the MANY Democrats in Congress, including the Democrat Senatorial Committee, who have received LARGE political contributions from these same ill-run organizations!

It's ALL or NOTHING, and if they want to keep America a country BASED ON LAW as our founding fathers planned, they had better think twice before voiding contracts or issuing retro taxes!!!

This is the problem CREATED BY & WORSENED BY CONGRESS - NOT the businesses they are busily investigating!

TERM LIMITS TERM LIMITS TERM LIMITS!!!!

Your comment resonates with me. I have actually e-mailed Krauthammer, and Will along with a few others who have the ability through their widely read columns to rally people to a banner, but the truth is they are more comfortable standing on the sidelines being aloof observers/commentators. And I really like Krauthammer!

What is 165 million?
Just heard that the deficit will be on average $1 trillion A YEAR over the next 10 years. A trillion is 1,000,000 millions. We will have some hope if Congress and the President spends as much effort into the remaining $999,835 millions.

How Obama moron ends cycles
At Lawrence Livermore Laboratories, during carefully controlled and recorded experiments, observed how the Obama moron disrupts normal economic cycles of expansion, contraction then rebound to expansion. Attempting to explain the Obama moron economic affect scientist said the Obama moron element will ultimately flat line the economy after a period of time.

The Obama moron flat line effect begins when the economy starts consuming itself while leaving no destructive waste because of an abundance of "Green" peon particles.

During experiments the Obama moron was recorded transmitting something to this effect, "I...er...uh...I...er...want to...there's something wrong with the teleprompter...I want to flat line the economy. I am not a socialist element. I am a flat line moron, using health care to produce the green energy, leading to the resulting flat line."

http://sweetness-light.com/archive/obama-will-not-accept-ec onomic-cycle

http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/rnr/1072469468.html

Then, this takes place the Obama moron assumes campaign mode.

Maobama is exposing his

real self. He is very similar to the leaders of the former Soviet Union.

One of his goals is to reduce the middle class to lower class so everyone is equal, except for the political leaders. They will continue to be the Lords in the Manors.

However, I do not necessarily believe Maobama will succeed in accomplishing his goals. There are a lot of armed, patriotic Americans who are determined to keep the dream alive. The Declaration of Independence is still important to many Americans. Hopefully, enough Americans to put a halt to this communist.

"Perverse Cosmic Myopia" - II
The president of the United States has decided to address this crisis while simultaneously tackling the four most complicated problems facing the nation: health care, energy, immigration and education. Why he has not also decided to spend his evenings mastering quantum mechanics and discovering the origins of consciousness is beyond me.

The results of this overload are evident on Capitol Hill. The banking plan is incomplete, and there is zero political will to pay for it. The president’s budget is being nibbled to death. The revenue ideas are dying one by one, while the spending ideas expand. By the latest estimate, the health care approach will cost $1.5 trillion over 10 years and the national debt will at least double, while the Chinese publicly complain about picking up the tab.

Many people used to wonder how the world’s leaders could be so myopic at various points in history — like during the Versailles Treaty or the turmoil of the 1930s. We don’t have to wonder any more. We get to watch the cosmic myopia replay itself in our own times.

"Perverse Cosmic Myopia" - I
You’d think if some tiger were lunging at your neck, your attention would be riveted on the tiger. But that’s apparently not how it works in the age of global A.D.D. As a tiger sinks its teeth into the world’s neck, we focus on the dust bunnies under the bed and the floorboards that need replacing on the deck. We live in the world of Perverse Cosmic Myopia, an inability to focus attention on the most perilous matter at hand.

The tiger, of course, is the collapsing world financial system. Americans actually have a falsely mild view of this crisis because the economy is worse abroad. The U.N.’s International Labor Organization projects between 30 million and 50 million job losses worldwide. Central European countries are teetering; Japan’s economy is horrifying; and the Chinese job creation machine is losing the race against its demographic pressures.

In times like these, you’d expect prudent leaders to prepare for the worst. After all, the pessimists have recently been vindicated by events. But that’s apparently too painful to think about. In normal times, leaders like to focus on the short term at the expense of the long term. But now the short term is really confusing, so leaders take refuge in projects that are years or decades away.

The End Of America? - III

The total monetary base, already at astronomical levels, is now expected to take another big hit with the new Fed policy of buying up U.S. longer-term treasury bills in a bid to drive down long-term interest rates.

Mr. Bernanke is sometimes known as “Helicopter Ben” because he once in an academic paper referred to the use of “helicopters” full of money to rescue an economy from deflation. In comments Wednesday to explain the Fed’s new policy of buying $300-billion in U.S. treasury bills, Mr. Bernanke noted that the Fed is now more worried about inflation being too low than about it getting too high in the future.

For the rest of the world, however, the worry is that America is at risk of becoming the fountainhead of a new inflationary outburst. The U.S. dollar is now in decline, gold is moving sharply higher, and new global currency turmoil is on the horizon.

It may not happen. A paper just published by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, source of the chart above, says that the Fed will have to be prepared to absorb all the excess money it has poured into the U.S. economy. It will be a technical and political challenge unlike any central bank has ever undertaken. The future of America is at stake.

The End Of America? - II

But America is at risk in other ways, especially in the technical business of setting and executing policy. The presidency of Barack Obama has set out on a course that has no precedent in U.S. history. Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose New Deal transformed the U.S. economy during the Great Depression, pushed America off on a sharply different political and ideological course. The Obama administration is different in many ways, not least in its supreme self-confidence in its methods and objectives.

Reform of health care, environmental policy, education, energy, banking, regulation — every nook and cranny of the U.S. economy has been put on alert for major change. Expansion of government spending, plunging the U.S. into unprecedented deficits, is without parallel. In economic policy, through regulation and control of energy output, financial services and monetary expansion, the U.S. government has embarked on a fundamental reshaping of America. It is designed, in short, to bring on the end of America.

The spillover effect of all this on the rest of the world promises to be dramatically disruptive. The greatest global risk is in monetary and currency policy. Below is a chart that graphically demonstrates the sharp deviation in monetary policy from past norms. Under the chairmanship of Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve is in the midst of a giant economic experiment, flooding the world with U.S. dollars, hoping that flood will stimulate economic activity.

The End Of America? - I

Helicopter Ben Bernanke’s Federal Reserve is dropping trillions of fresh paper dollars on the world economy, the President of the United States is cracking jokes on late-night comedy shows, his energy minister is threatening a trade war over carbon emissions, his treasury secretary is dithering over a banking reform program amid rising concerns over his competence and a monumentally dysfunctional U.S. Congress is launching another public jihad against corporations and bankers.

As an aghast world — from China to Chicago and Chihuahua — watches, the circus-like U.S. political system seems to be declining into near chaos. Through it all, stock and financial markets are paralyzed. The more the policy regime does, the worse the outlook gets. The multi-ringed spectacle raises a disturbing question in many minds: Is this the end of America?

Probably not, if only because there are good reasons for optimism. The U.S. economy has pulled out of self-destructive political spirals in the past, spurred on by its business class and corporate leaders, the profit-making and market-creating people who rose above the political turmoil to once again lift the world out of financial crisis. It’s happened many times before, except for once, when it took 20 years to rise out of the Great Depression.

Past success, however, is no guarantee of future recovery, especially now when there are daily disasters and new indicators of political breakdown. All developments are not disasters in themselves.

Roadmaster- Why the outrage???
Good post. I frequent the homes of some of my golfing/business friends. They are extremely successful. Some of these are MILLION dollar homes with several 100K cars in the driveway. Yes I am envious to a VERY small extent but also fascinated at thier ambition, drive and success and I try to learn from it. These people have been nothing BUT helpful and encouraging to me and I feel so lucky to be able to spend time with them. They are not to be hated or attacked by these Obamanites who would have you think they are criminals. Class warfare never works.

Another thing
What is the Bill Gates reference all about? It is lame. If this is his method of teaching people what a trillion dollars, then why is he bypassing an opportunity to expose the sleaze?

Geithner, God bless his soul, is not going to find a way out of the dilemma. It is the "People" Mr. Krauthammer, the true power of America, the believers, the hopers and the dreamers, the American people. The one's who Krauthammer thinks have to "get real, step aside and let the "big guns" do their thing. The people who come from a stock who froze the first winter but did't give up. Just study George Washington's tenacity.

Krauthammer does not believe in God, enough said.

What Does A Trillion Dollars Look Like?
Here is a great web link to visualize just how much a trillion dollars really is.

http://www.pagetutor.com/trillion/index.html

Obama and Congress are as someone so astutely said, "Fiscally Incontinent" with their Keynesian ideas and Social Engineering fantasies being fulfilled.

Americans need to wake up and smell the dog doo or we can kiss our country goodbye...

The Obama moron and co-moron operating
Lawrence Livermore Laboratories has produced 10 examples of the Obama moron, and its co-Biden moron, functioning. Follow this link:

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/toby_harnden/blog/2009/03/20/t op_10_gaffes_by_barack_obama_and_joe_biden_

These examples of the Obama moron in operation suggest the Obama moron was not joking when it admitted its bowling was suited for the Special Olympics.

Sam
This is what bugs me about Krauthammer's article. Any detective who says that a piece of evidence is negligible, is not a good detective. What Krauthammer's doing with his paycheck this week, is cashing in on the desensitization of the American people.

We have seen astronomical amounts of money thrown blindly to the wind called, "nobody's watching, because no one knows what they are doing."

I think we would have been better served if Krauthammer had spent less time on a schmooze, an more time on deciphering how to get the American people to realize that we are being raped financially.

This article is just another part of the problem.

Democrat Double Talk
The democrats are just doing what they are so good at denying they know anything and shifting the blame to any one else even their beloved pres. Lefty

Illusion at its best
This whole bru-ha-ha is an illusion comparable to one of Hudini's!!! The stimulus, the omnibus spending bill, and all to follow are/will be loaded with Democrat payments to patronage groups. Follow the money to AIG and understand why the law was crafed the way it was--only when the bonus payments came to light did the (feigned) outrage begin. If the public becomes enraged by the cessation of school vouchers in DC or Mexican trucks the same thing will happen. As an afterthought, how many more hidden payoffs will be found?

The Obama "Moron" element...
(This is not something I've created. Another poster, Farmer's Wife from TX, placed this on another TH board, on Feb. 13, 2009.)

Perhaps, this explains our nation's problem...

New discovery of the element, "The Obama Moron."

Lawrence Livermore Laboratories has discovered the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (Gv), has one
neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2- 6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of morons promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass.

When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

Hmmmm...

Tamping down public furor
is not wise. Anything to stop common apathy, to wake up the everyday guy and gal, is worth a whole lot more than people stabbing blindly playing redeemers and sending our country into bankruptcy.

Krauthammer throws credit to the wind, like Obama throws money down the drain.

This mini furor, hopefully woke up a lot people who could not wrap their minds around a trillion dollars.

You can spin words, all you want. It is not the same brainless idiots who got us here, who can get us out, it is the people of the United States taking control and saying "no to the crap." Unfortunately, Mr. Krauthammer assumes that AIG, who goes through money like I go through paper towels, will actually turn the economy around.

What will turn the economy around is when the fools are ferreted out, and the people start realizing that they aren't cowards, and racists, and bad guys because they work their hands to the bone to start a business, but they are Americans.

Mr. Krauthammer, you watched as all these people you want us to sit back and observe, send billions of our dollars to Europe. I think your mind is too caught up in the present. What a shame. I think it is time to set a fire under the "Sleeping Giant" the people of the United States of America.

Pete
How about, for starters, having time for Congress to read what they are about to vote on? That, to me, would be a good place to start.

BO also promised that the topics of Executive Orders would be published five days ahead of time. Last week the excuse was given that they had to work out the 'kinks' to do so. What? Mr. Techno Prez and his crew are stumbling over that?

larry22
I appreciate and thank you for your post. I am sick of hearing about how Bush lied. I would add one more comment to your examples, the other countries that stepped up and told the U.N. that their intelligence showed that Iraq was a danger due to WMD's. Does everyone forget, or conveniently ignore, what Germany and GB, for two, had to say?

A Rush to Legislate
This debacle simply demonstrates the folly of rushing legislation. By cutting out the critics -- and keeping it from the public scrutiny before being passed, the bailout-stimulus legislation was filled with programs and spending that aren't justified and is full of provisions that are likely to come back with unintended consequences.

The lesson is that the congressional leaders should honor Obama's campaign pledge that bills will be posted online for 5 days before final consideration.

if the Obama vision for our society and the role of the government is so important and vital, what is the problem with letting the voters see and comment on the proposals as they're being put together. Or is it that Obama and the Democrats are afraid that the voters won't like what they see? Either it's good and can be justified (and sold) to the public or it shouldn't be enacted -- and certainly enacting legislation in a rush is a recipe for disappointment.

I know, I know.

But...,what do we do?

Steve/Who's making money
Kinda wonder if there isn't an account which is under the name of some public interest group.
A public interest group so concerned with our safety, security, right to abortion, right to carry a gun, right to have a higher education and any other interest that it gives to all the members of Congress equally.

Strange pattern of democrat deception
The democrat party has a curious pattern and history of telling political lies and public deception.

Some examples.

The use of deception in the "Bush lied to us" political strategy when democrat statements reveal otherwise:

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them." - Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." - President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face." - Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

Now democrats use deception in their AIG lies:

Chris Dodd says Obama admin told him to add AIG bonuses in the democrat Porkulus bill:
http://www.wfsb.com/money/18969326/detail.html

Obama and Dodd were the 1 and 2 receivers of AIG campaign money:
http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2009/03/obama-administrat ion-knew-about-aig.html

However, both Obama, Dodd and democrat claim $165 million in AIG bonuses payments were unknown to them. All fake outrage over the bonuses and write tax legislation to cover up democrat lies.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29771499/

This is clear tyranny of the lying democrat majority! Are our freedoms, and country safe, while under the tyranny of left-wing, neo-marxism, democrats?

The Forest, Not The Trees

People, you are missing the big picture. Do you fully comprehend the motivations and ramifications of the Federal Reserve's actions of Wednesday?

The Federal Reserve is PRINTING money because the United States' ability to borrow overseas is drying up. Why is the Federal Reserve injecting another trillion dollars into the monetary circulation when it has tripled the supply in the last 6 months and the government has been spending worse than even the drunkest of sailors? Because we are in the death spiral of deflation, which is the highway to the hell of a DEPRESSION. The Federal Reserve is trying to avert this by jump starting INFLATION. NEVER in the history of monetary policy has a country successfully rode this one-trick pony. NEVER!

When the Federal Reserve fails, we are in:

1) a depression, or

2) have hyperinflation, or

3) have both, which would be similiar to the Weimar Government or modern-day Zimbabwe.

This situation is not the result of any one Administration. It is the product of decades of the expansion of government, obscene government spending (even in the Clinton Administration the national debt with up), and reckless monetary policy.

Wake up, people! You are looking at trees while there is a forest fire.

Wow...
I never thought I would miss the Clinton years, but Slick Willie is looking better and better in comparison with the Obamessiah.

Thank you Charles, this was exactly what I wanted....It appears to be a big Congressional search engine, which is what I have always wanted.

job of a president
Keep media focus on president. Keep media focus off Congress and the specifics of legislation they create.

Obama's doing great Bush needed a war.

Joe the Plumber Revisited
Obama is doing exactly what he said he was going to do, which is what he told Joe the Plumber. His actions, facilitated by a run-amok Congress are meant to RE-DISTRIBUTE THE WEALTH. Obama and Congress don't care about the economy or anything else other than to take our money. They know if they were honest about what they were doing, Americans would revolt. So, they constantly work to avert our attention, campaign to maintain approval ratings, and just flat out lie.

furthermore, David in MO
I find this amusing"

You say, "The majority of the income earned by Mexican truckers goes back to Mexico, it is not spent here in America. I don't need to explain that too, do I?"

Explain?

Explain why you'll work for nothing, let's hear it. Explain why those shipments are ordered, bought and paid for, but you can't take the money home to your place of bidniss, where they'll pay your salary and you-- the peon-

Can buy grub and clothes for your family. You think these guys must work for nothing? EXPLAIN, DAVE.

EVIL IS AS EVIL DOES
Obama and his cronies have ONE RULE: THERE ARE
NO RULES. The evidence is already in after only
60 days. The "DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO" doctrine
is failing on every front, and right-thinking
people are not only outraged, they are talking
about what action to take to stop this madness!
Treason is the only term to use to describe
what our "leaders" are doing in Washington,DC.
They ignore the Constitution at every turn, and
make up their own rules to suit themselves as
they go. Simply put, THEY ARE TRAITORS TO ALL
THIS COUNTRY STANDS FOR!
Who are the representatives of good and evil?
God and Satan respectively. God founded this
country, and Satan's representatives are in the
process of destroying it.
Stand up and actually charge these traitorous
"leaders" with their treasonous acts, prosecute
them, and reverse the damage they've done as
criminal acts!
Either do that, or pray to God that He will
intervene in His judgement upon this country
which has turned its back on Him...YOUR CHOICE.

Dear David in MO

If the US gov't had signed a contract with you & your trucking company; then summarily broken it --leaving you high and dry,

Would you object? So has Mexico. Only, unlike you; there's something Mexico can do about it. Raise tariffs. Meanwhile, the Teamsters is fat and sassy; who only have to worry about your one-truck operation. A fat lot you can do to their corrupt empire.

Then; I wonder how you reached the conclusion that "Mexican drivers," don't have the same COSTS you do, if you haven't paid their costs? --You, at least OWN your truck; where most of the Mexican drivers who are being defrauded now are only employees.

A contract is a contract; and NAFTA reaches both ways across our borders. This is also an illegal move by our Congress. It's another step toward socialism by a corrupt gang of racketeers in the Democrat party.

OBAMA IN THE SHADOWS
Obama is hiding from Washington and presidential responsibilities. He is still campaigning because he has no clue what to do as President and so the structures are crumbling around him as he spins his stuff on talk shows and in town halls. Why is there no major outrage at his suggestion to take away medical benefits from wounded veterans? He will give money away to those who are well able to work but who want to be supported and taken care of, but will deny those who have defended freedom the benefits they so desperately need. And there is often talk of 'social security' problems..does he want to do away with that too? Elderly people who depend on social security have worked hard...not like those he wants to support with houses and benefits in their young years. His people are throwing away trillions as they try to figure out what to do to get the economy in shape...oh, these trillions didn't do it so let's put in more trillions...it's all so absurd and yet frightening because we have people running the government who don't know how to run a governemtn. Obama needs to get back to Washington and stay there and work for his living like everyone else...and get teachers who can help him understand what it takes to run a country. He has broken almost every promise he made and now he's out stumping and making more promises...and yet, people still believe he's going to save them. What will it take for them to see beyond the shadows to his real self...many more will suffer before the American people wake up and realize they have elected a shadow man...he has paid millions to keep his past...his relevant past...a secret. Now we pay for the choice we made...hopefully, this choice will only last for four years and then healing will come....Sam

thing of beauty?
"All of you who think that Obama is an idiot who can't speak without a teleprompter should go read the transcript of his tonight show appearance. It's a thing of beauty. The man actually talks in complete sentences and expresses himself clearly and cogently."

If I memorize dozens of trite bumper sticker catch phrases, and randomly rearrange them in varying combinations, I, too, would be able to seem like a genius.

The only problem is that you have to remember the exact arrangement of the catch phrases that you used in order to prevent your self from contradicting yourself every time you turn around.

How's it working for you, Mr. President?

Mexican Truck Program
Mr. Krauthammer;
The Teamsters may have the most recognition in trucking, however, they only represent 10% (TEN) of the trucking industry affected by the Mexican truck program.

On any given day, there are about 3 million trucks ON THE ROAD, WORKING. Of that number, more than 75% are Independent Owner/Operators, small-business trucking companies that own 10 or FEWER trucks.

Like myself, a one-truck company.

And I am exasperated by all the Congressional and media blathering about the safety issues. Yes, there are some issues, but not with the 97 companies, not TRUCKS, that were allowed to operate here.

They were well-maintained trucks with drivers whose safety performance had been properly evaluated. However, Mexico still does not have a safety record database system OUR DOT and FMCSA Inspectors could access during roadside and Weigh Station inspections. Until they do, they are NOT on par with what we truckers deal with daily.

No, my concern is NOT the safety issues. It is Economics.

A.) Most Mexican drivers that would be allowed to operate here don't have to meet the same level of operating costs American truckers do. Therefore, they are able to UNDERBID us on loads and take business right out of our hands. This just cannot stand, you will bankrupt many small businessmen and create hardship for many AMERICAN families.

B.)The majority of the income earned by Mexican truckers goes back to Mexico, it is not spent here in America. I don't need to explain that too, do I?

Normally, like in the balance of your op-ed on AIG, I agree with you very often. However, on this truck program, you have the facts simply WRONG!

AIG Smoke Screen
AIG is a smoke screen. BHO and his minions knew about the bonuses last year. The more important question is: What part of the Constitution has BHO been violating while congress is playing at being upset?

Who voted and how?
Anyone have a clue about how to find a list of recorded votes by every Representative on this Constitutional violation vote??

Video Of The Lying B@stards!

Tim Geithner and Congress claim that they got blindsided by the AIG bonuses late last week, before anyone had a chance to stop AIG from paying them. However, C-SPAN’s video library tells a very different story. Watch the clip from a March 3rd hearing of the House Ways and Means Committee in which Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY) specifically mentions the upcoming payouts of over $162 million in bonuses to AIG execs, the very same number that inflamed Washington DC this week.

http://hotair.com/archives/2009/03/20/video-congress-geithn er-knew-about-bonuses-on-march-3rd/

AIG bonuses
Two possibilities concerning the big flap over the A.I.G. bonuses,
1. Our elected officials in Congress have been playing rope-a-dope convincing us that they are a bunch of defuses, when in reality they are pulling off a very cleaver diversion.
2. Or, like a small church congregation addressing their budget, there is little if any discussion about the three million for a new sanctuary because it’s not a reality for them, but $137 for office supplies creates a debate that can last for hours because the people understand $137.

Room for Thought
Right on Mr. Krauthammer!!

The brutal display of Congressional harshness towards the AIG CEO is an example of politics at its worst which gains nothing but satisfaction to the egos of those who represent us, and who place more value in getting reelected than resolving the fiscal problems that face this nation.

If they would focus their attention and efforts with the same kind of gusto in reducing our nation's debt they might regain my Trust.

The taxpayer cost to support the TARP and Stimulus legislation is misuscule as compared to the $50 trillion of unfunded Social Security and Medicare tax liablility that must be supported by future generations of taxpayers to keep both of these social programs solvent. This pending fiscal disaster apparently is of no concern to those who politcally represent us.

My taxes that in part support the salaries of those who represent me and would be better spent to help those who work for McDonalds and Wal-Mart as they truely work for a living and have my respect. Those who politically represent us are adapt at working with their mouths only.

Is collapse part of The Plan?
Obama's leadership void becomes more apparent with each passing week. The credit/banking mess is screaming for attention -- the forest is on fire, as it were -- yet Obama is fixated on his precious orchids: universal healthcare, dismantling national defense, income redistribution, and staged celebrity events!

The administration is in dire need of triage. There's a patient -- the economy -- spurting blood across the emergency room, and Obama is off on a sabbatical, strolling about on a vanity lecture tour discussing the coolest new plastic surgery procedures. Somebody's priorities are out of whack.

Or are they? Obama has an agenda, all right, and preserving the nation's economic system is not on it. The Obama Doctrine seems to be "Never let a serious crisis go to waste." Call me cynical, but it's as if he wants the economic crisis to persist as an excuse to ram through his Marxist programs.

This is the "community organizer", the street agitator, imposing his thuggery on a national scale. The man is a disgrace.

So True!
"Government can never manage a business. Goodness, they suck at delivering the mail and issuing drivers' licenses."

That is true! The reason being is the rules that apply to business do not apply to government, and the rules that apply to government do not apply to business. Trying to mix them is like mixing oil and water.

Who's making the money
How many people know that if you but the stimulise (sp?) packages at $2T. European bankers (commonly known as the Federal Reserve in the US) made $46B just off printing the money. Pretty good return for simply breathing.

Obama's Remark
I Do Not Support Obama. that being said the Special Olympics remark i believe he was poking fun at himself, not the participants of the Special Olympics. He should not have made the reference, it was stupid, and it is now being taken out of context. But in all fairness, if it would have been a republican who said the same thing, the backlash would have been worse.

Fox news this morning was outraged over the comment.
CNN news barely touched on it.

Gov't. in need of remedial math.
Charles continues to be among the top four or five columnists we have in the USA. He got it right this time, too.

I though witch hunts were in the past
I also can't remember the sheer amount of condemnatios and vitriol poured on people for almost no reason. Nadya Suleiman and the AIG folks are getting mob reactions for doing nothing purposefully to irritate others: she is having babies -- a quite natural outcome for fertilized eggs -- and AIG folks are getting the money contracted to them. I'm afraid I'd want the money also, as most of you would too.

America seems to be entering into an era of great self-righteous indignation. This can't be a good harbinger of things to come. Self-righteous anger never has an end, and is never repented of.

Here they come again
Congress passed the Garn St Germain legislation of 1982 which led to the S&L bailout.

Congress must have forgotten about the mortgage crisis when they created the Commodities Futures Modernization act of 2000 which allowed banks to bundle the loans.

Or Maybe it was deliberate. Who was it that said it was terrible to waste a good crisis? Especially if the crisis can create CASH.

AIG paid Bear Stearns not with government backed gaurantees.

Had Bear Stearns received government money prior to the AIG bailout?

Not to worry Congress is going to fix it.

Here is what the rule is:
The rule is that no longer the paper shuffling manipulators or their facilitators, whoever and wherever they are, can steal without potential consequence.

Great post! When I heard about Obama's idiotic remark, I thought to myself, "I bet some of those Special Olympic bowlers could do a lot better than 129!" I'd love to seem them take on Obama. They'd humiliate him.

Be careful what you wish for
If Congress can retroactively tax/confiscate AIG bonus money on a whim, then they can do it to other businesses and rich folks also on a whim. Explain to me why not?

You may be cheering when AIG suffers, but who's going to lament your money being taken? The underlining message is what counts: the government can decide winners and losers. Wow, it doesn't sound very Constitutional. This is a kind of class envy and vitriol I haven't seen or heard since my graduate work in Social Work. I'll be shocked if it doesn't lead to other confiscations.

Congress and the Constitution
How many of our legislators are lawyers? A majority, right? And still they are trying to pass laws which violate specific parts of the Constitution to appease mob anger. This is unconscionable. I am so disgusted. I wish I was surprised.
================

Your question puts me in mind of a comment one of my very good, and very conservative friends once made to me without thinking as we were discussing candidates in an upcoming state legislature election...

His brain fart of a declaration about one of the candidates I said I kind of liked...

"He wouldn't be a good legislator because he's not even a lawyer."

Given the immediate back peddling he started, after seeing the look on my face which musta done a fair job of explaining how stupid what he just offered was sounding...

My response..."Electing a lawyer is like leaving the fox to guard the hen house." It's a major strike against any candidate in my eyes.

Prattle about bonuses and taxes
People are missing a very important point this whole situation. This is the first time I've seen US history taxes or legislation used at the national level as a weapon against specific group with full support of the people "might as well be called the mob".

You used to see this crap in small towns out it in the sticks. And it was very petty. Now with the feds doing it we have opened a Pandora's box. If Obama signs this into law it will give full license for the staties and locals to do the same.

To cap it off investors are going to bow out of the US economy. The first step has been going for a long time now pre-Obama http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE52H2CY200903 18 Stupidity like this will accelerate this process. Get ready for $6 gallon gas folks and that's just the begining

"How quickly Congress can act over AIG bailouts!"

You're not kidding! What really outrages me is the fact that they get so outraged over THEIR OWN IRRESPONSIBLE ACTIONS!! Even though I despise what AIG did, I think this punitive tax on the bonuses is even more despicable. We're setting a dangerous precedent when we let Congress get away with ex post facto laws, especially when they're just trying to cover their own behinds. I hope AIG takes this to court.

Bush Tried To Limit Bonuses

Bush and Paulson tried to prevent bonuses being paid to AIG executives from TARP funds. There was significant push back from AIG and Paulson felt that the possibility of AIG failing, if the bonus issue became a deal breaker, was too grave a possibility to risk given the impact it would have on the overall economy.

Government can never manage a business. Goodness, they suck at delivering the mail and issuing drivers' licenses.

No more bailouts. PERIOD.

Bring It On!!!

Special Olympics Champ to Barack: Bring it On!

A bowling phenom in the Special Olympics has just challenged Prez Barack Obama to a White House roll-off ... and he'll probably kick Barack's butt.

Kolan McConiughey, a Special Olympics competitor who has bowled three perfect 300 games, tells TMZ that the Prez has to score a lot higher than 129 to beat him. Kolan says he bowls an average of 266.

Kolan -- who works at a grocery store in Ann Arbor, Mich. -- said he'd love to go to the White House to beat Barack on his own lane. Kolan said, "He's cool, but he can't beat me."

We posed the challenge to the White House. They said "no comment".

AIG
Is the perfect example of why the United States Government should stay out of the economy. D.C. Says we must help the failing companies, but only makes the situation worse. Way to go D.C.!!!

Our Constitution is being ripped apart by our leadership, Their "leadership" is no longer needed. Vote everyone of them out in the up coming election. Ron Paul, you keep up the good work, we will need someone to lead the leaders.

How quickly Congress can act
over AIG bailouts! Apparently they do hear from much of the public and they will move with lightning speed WHEN THEY CHOOSE to. But the scumbags in Congress ignored us all when we said the bailouts and budgets were a travesty. Nothing demonstrates their contempt for the American citizen better.

Congress = Self-serving Stupidity
In my 70-plus years, I've never seen the degree of hypocritical, self-serving, congressional stupidity that I've seen over the past couple of months. If their current actions and mindset presage what is to come, I fear for the republic. Decisions are far too vital in the context of both domestic and global needs to be left in the hands of these dolts. To compound insult upon injury, executive leadership appears to be weak, immature, and too "left-leaning" to serve America properly in these perilous times. The first step in the 2010 congressional elections is to vote most of the incumbents who are running out of office. Hopefully, it will not be too late at that time to prevent further damage.

congress
I've never done the blog-thing, but . . .
Those who have been elected to serve in Congress are too small. They are too small to be leaders. Emotionally small. Intellectually small. The more entrenched they get, the smaller they become.
They rant about "bonuses" like a tribe of tossed-up baboons, strut about like a flock of flustered chickens, and parade indignation like emperor's new wardrobe. Yet they see no parallel of the "bonuses" issue of stupidity and greed with their own legislative stupidity and greed. They are too small, and their spending frenzy must be the envy of pirana, a small, agressive fish with an insatiable appetite.

Our elected representatives and senators are openly demonstrating that they are too small for the job.

Bonuses
Strictly from a conservative view: why should people doing crappy work be rewarded? Why should anyone reward failure? The Dems - Dodd in particular - seem intent upon rewarding every kind of failure at every level of society.
That's what the Dims do: reward failure.

I agree that retroactive actions on the bonus are a bad idea - Squeaker Pelosi is a hysterical proponent of this nonsense.

But it is still a bad idea to reward failure.

Greyhounds killing coyotes
Ever watched Greyhounds kill a coyote?
I actually rode up on a dog hunter one morning just as he unleashed his greyhounds. Thinking back on it, that poor coyote never had a prayer. Those greyhounds looked like laser guided missles.

After seeing this, an easy analogy for me is to picture the coyote as, "We the People" and the greyhounds are the crop of DemwitOCrap libturds in-charge in Washington today...

The greyhounds technique is to attack as a team, lightening fast, with the first hit designed to knock the coyote off his feet and turn him upside down. Same with the subsequent hits, until a greyhound has a clear shot at a throat grab.

In otherwords this team of lightening fast DemwitOCraps keeps us slower moving "We the People" off balance and up ended until they manage to make a throat grab.

Phylo
It really sucks to be you.
End of conversation.

I am willing to help work our way out
I am willing to help by working to get our great country out of this mess, but not if you are going to tax away all my motivation to work and redistribute it to those who either don't know how to work or refuse to work. Think about it. What the Obama Administration is doing is destroying the core of personal incentive. It is this core incentive of Capitalism that has made us the greatest country in the history of mankind and they want to flush it down the sewer of income redistribution. It is no more complicated than that. Allow people who produce to produce and keep a fair share of their efforts or wallow in poverty and shame with those tax eaters who have gained control of the Government of the county.

Congressional folly
[[In the United States, the federal government is prohibited from passing ex post facto laws by Article I, section 9 of the U.S. Constitution and the states are prohibited from the same by clause 1 of section 10. This is one of the very few restrictions that the United States Constitution made to both the power of the federal and state governments prior to amendment.]]

Perhaps I missed where Charles pointed this out, but if the above is true, reckon how much more than $165 million will this Congressional folly cost us tax payers in legal fees??? And, if the Supreme Court does uphold the Constitution, what will the total cost to us, We the People???

whose side is Obama on?
The money problem was created just to cover Obama's other evil agendas like forcing verterans to obtain thier own health insurance...Which is not only disgraceful, but is an effort to discourage men from enlisting in the milatary...
And the camoflauge he has provided for muslim terrorists by first not allowing the word terrorist or enemy compatant to be even mentioned and by accusing men like Rush or Hannity or the tea gang as being the real terrorists..or by stopping the airline pilots from carrying firearms and forcing them into counceling if they get out of line.. This makes the airline pilots the real terrorists in peoples eyes..
One of the Gitmo killers said they would destroy us financially, militarily, and politically...I am wondering if Obama is their major weapon...As I see it Obama has not done one beneficial thing for American in his first 60 days..Only things to destroy and divide us..

Soros
Even Soros can't tank the dollar. For the short term, it will get stronger in relation to most currencies (i.e., the Euro is going in the tank over 3+T in defaults by Eastern Europe)because, no matter how bad it is here, it is worse everywhere else but China.
Now, when the money comes off the sidelines and our debt is not paid down as promised, based as it is on bad economic projections, THEN we will see hyperinflation, and the rookies we are depending on to fix that won't be able to.

A TRILLION for the Vertically Challenged
Take a quick look at some nearby window, one, say, around 3' by 3' and notice how many little spaces (interstices) there are in the screen on that window.
That's about a MILLION wee squares!
(Along the way imagine each square is a dollar.)
A BILLION dollars that way would be a long roll of 3'-wide screen wire...over a half-mile long!
A TRILLION dollars is over 200 acres covered with screen wire!
Now irrigate all that acreage and watch it rust.

WHAT HAS SOROS BEEN UP TO?

.....Has anyone been watching the man who broke the Bank of England by shorting the pound? ...

.....Who stands to benefit if the American dollar tanks? ...

.....Is SOROS the pupet master, the man behind the curtain who pulls OBAMBI'S strings? ...

.....Now I know what the citizens of ROME must have felt like as they watched their REPUBLIC crumble around their ears .....COLOSSUS

What I heard last night on Leno were trite jokes, mediocre but relaxed conversation, and a campaigner's trick of going back to his "big three issues" at every opportunity, even if totally unrelated to the subject. How anyone with an IQ above, say, 90, could view that crap as "brilliant and inspiring" is beyond me. And Jay, who is what he is, throwing softballs like a silly schoolgirl.
Do you think Kevin would have worn a suit for Bush? Just asking .....

The Cure for the AIG Bonus Blues

And so we have it... the "change" we can believe in. Over the last three years or so, Americans have wanted "change," and change is exactly what we have received. Since the Democrats have come to power, unemployment is going up and the stock market is going down. The housing market has collapsed, and the power of big government has grown by leaps and bounds.

But now, perhaps the American people will see what this new administration and the liberals in Congress are all about. The Obama agenda is about power... and not power to the people... but power to the government and a new ruling class. They construct an enemy, turn the focus of the American people on that enemy, and then push forward their radical agenda. In this case, the Obama "enemy" is the fact that AIG executives are getting paid bonuses with taxpayer-funded bailout money. Attention is being diverted to that issue and the "cure" is a new set of government powers that could be used to tax any particular person or group that the government chooses. If that doesn't make you fearful, it should!

Phylo 9:07 a.m.
Were you watching Leno in some alternate universe?

Also...,are you not posting from the state that has embraced Sharia banking, has missing Somali Americans who are being trained at terrorist camps, has installed footbaths for muslim residents at various public buildings? I was just wondering.

One more question. Isn't phylo some sort of dough? Here's a heads up for you.Dough is not a symbol of admirable higher thinking skills.

What IS a trillion?
Grab 100 of your old, wrinkled ten-thousand-dollar bills from your wallet and stack 'em into a little one-inch-high bundle. You're now looking at 1 MILLION dollars! Cool!
A BILLION dollars would be a pile of them little one-inchers 8 stories high! Very cool!
A TRILLION would be stacking those one-million-dollars-per-inch bundles 8 THOUSAND stories high! Really cool!
Be careful...dont let 'em topple over!
Now imagine a hole that deep...

Consistently Brilliant
Krauthammer, more than almost any other pundit, is the sage of these times. He says more, better, in fewer words, than anyone. It is important to note (and he did, but subtly, with the bomb line) that these are mainly retention bonuses to folks who are neede to unwind this catastrophe so the company can be split and sold off. These are not profit-bonuses. It is a ridiculous issue over which to turn the Constitution and rule of law on its head, and the Congress is acting like schoolchildren at recess. Oh, for a recess!

Phylo
Get off your knees, man.

You fawn over Obama like a love-sick school girl at a Jonas Brothers concert.

Shouldn't you be camped out for tickets at the site of his next stop on the talk show circuit? Maybe you can worm your way in the audience when he appears on "Ellen." You could throw your panties and hotel room key on the stage (if you can manage not to faint when he comes out from the green room).

AIG bonuses
While I am apalled by the bonuses paid to AIG people, these people have contractual agreements. Is it not against the law to break a contract? How can Congress levy a tax on monies given to people who are contractually "entitled?" Dodd, our treasury secretary, Obama, Rangle, Frank -- and on and on -- these people not only supported the bonuses, they enabled them. If the recipients of the bonuses go to court -- how much will that cost taxpayers. Clean up Congress first.

Magician indeed
Cambermeister has it right: this AIG thing is just the latest in a string of things Carville & Co have put out to distract us.

How about:

- why is the President of the US wasting his time on a talk show in the middle of this crisis?

- what about the bonuses to Freddie and Fanny execs? Their contributions to Frank & Obama make AIG look like pikers. Where's the "outrage" there?

LAWYERS AT FAULT
Charles, you are brilliant, insightful and wonderfully candid, as always. What is being overlooked in this financial crisis is the role played by the attorneys who orchestrated and were paid huge fees for closing on the toxic assets accumulated by Lehmans and AIG, et al.
The hedge fund scams and bond financing schemes that choked banks at the start of 2000 need to be examined and identified for what they were. Ways attorneys and banks and real estate brokers were able to manipulate numbers to convince the profitability of failed assets in order to get paid knowing they would default and be eligible to be re-financed all over again after a foreclosure and MORE fees generated. We have a Congress of marginally capable attorneys and politically annoited candidates who have no business making any of these decisions. As Shakespeare so correctly assessed, "First, kill all the lawyers." I would add a second, "term limits."

Clueless
I fail to understand why anyone would vote for the Democrats.

Denise
NOW! NOW! You KNOW that Elitist Liberal thinks that laws are for “the Little People”, while Liberal Elitists, because they are BETTER than us (rolls eyes), can break them with impunity. Look at the Liberal Elitist murderers, pedophiles and tax cheats walling around in DC.

Lenobama?
Yes Mr. Krauthammer!
Like a magician fooling a child with the coin from the ear trick, The White House decides to distract us with farcical nonsense of a caliber comparatively inconsequential.
As the American family nest egg has been reduced by Trillions (with a T) and the debt passed on to our kids has been increased by Trillions (also with a T).
This administration has decided to orchestrate a hissy fit over millions (with an M not T or even a B) bonuses paid to what are in essence government employees that they oversee.
Not only have the major networks latched on, but most semi-smart folks I know are similarly outraged.
Big AIG Bonuses are certainly inappropriate right now, but the smoothness with which Carville and company have scripted this and trained the trainable to spew spit like a Pavlov dog is truly impressive.
What will be the next distraction?
Will we stare at a mosquito as a Kenworth runs us over.
Will we be transfixed by the LenoObama show while our house is on fire.
God help us, since we've lost the focus to help ourselves.

======================

The comment about bowling and the Special Olympics was a beauty alright.

Say it again and again.

I believe this is your first mentioning of Pres-Obama without making reference to his 'nimbleness' or 'sophistication'. That's because there has been nothing sophisticated or nimble happening. This economy is chained to a bunch of congressmen that are so bled dry of rationale I can't help but believe the an intellectual vampire lurking about the halls.
I wonder who or whom that could be...??
Arrogance and sophisticated inteptitude has a way of spreading itself around. It's contagious--you know, like vampirism.

AIG Bonuses and Congress
There is only one reason why Congressional Democrats and the president are so focussed on this issue - they hope and pray that it will divert the public's attention from their role in screwing up the United States and World economy. Everytime they act in an emercency mode it is to cover up their past, pathetic, ill-conceived legislation and policy directives which created the mess to begin with. They do not have a clue what they are doing - that is all too evident!

"If I Can Dream"
"Deep in my heart there's a trembling question
Still I am sure that the answer gonna come somehow
Out there in the dark, there's a beckoning candle
And while I can think, while I can talk
While I can stand, while I can walk
While I can dream, please let my dream
Come true, right now"
Impeach Obama, Pelosi, Schumer, Frank, Dodd and bring back captitalism.
Quotes from Elvis Presley

Obama is clueless and a Danger to us all
Obama is the result of the Mindless Liberal Left running amok in Universities, the Media and Government. Blame George Bush all you want to, but he is no longer in the White House. He is also not making a Fool of himself on Jay Leno. Obama is no more capable of leading this Country than Pee Wee Herman. At least Pee Wee Herman was an actual Hollywood entertainer. For this guy to of been elected is a National embarrassment. "Change we can believe in".

Charles well said.
I am 71 and very nervous about my future and my children's future. Mine because I have already lost over 50% of the value of my retirement investments and my children's who will have to pay for all of it.

Big government does not work, and I can't understand why the so many supposedly brilliant people think it does.

It is all the same Global warming is a matter of perspective, the bail out is also a matter of perspective. As you said, the bonuses amount to less that 1/10 of 1 percent of the total bailout. Government wants to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Unforntunatly, those in power either don't know or don't care.

What a shame, this used to be a great place to live and raise a family. Now is it just a safe place to live and getting worse every day.

Term Limits;

Roadmaster, your post about The Outrage is right on. We keep complaining about this and that but keep electing the boobs into office election after election. If we want to solve the majority of our problems in government we need to start putting pressure on our government for term limits. I suggest 1 term (6 years) for a senator and 3 terms (6 years) for a house member. I think this would solve a lot of our problems. We can't do any worse than we are now and it would get rid of some of the corruption we have now. Too many professional politicians who have never done anything. They have never held a job in the private sector. They have no experience in running a company or anything else. Term limits will get rid of the Kennedys, The Barney Franks, Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry etc.

Ooo, bad timing, Kraut.
Krauthammer is foaming with outrage over what the president should be telling the American people and... oops, turns out that that's exactly what Obama said last night on Leno.

All of you who think that Obama is an idiot who can't speak without a teleprompter should go read the transcript of his tonight show appearance. It's a thing of beauty. The man actually talks in complete sentences and expresses himself clearly and cogently.

Obama was basically saying, last night, everything that Krauthammer is saying here in this column. But Republicans think Krauthammer is a genius who can do no wrong, and you think Obama is an idiot who can;t do anything right.

The disconnect between reality and right wing world continues to amaze and confound me.

Phylo out.

Charles you hit the nail on the head!!
Dear Charles,

Once again, you hit the nail on the head. These were the exact arguments I was giving my husband last night. Please keep sharing your eloquent writings on what is happening in our country and the world today. You say it the best!!!

Just Another Step.....
By Jeremy Gaunt, European Investment Correspondent

LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) - A U.N. panel will next week recommend that the world ditch the dollar as its reserve currency in favor of a shared basket of currencies, a member of the panel said on Wednesday, adding to pressure on the dollar.

Corporate Governance
I'm so tired of this story and stupid congressional reaction. Maybe we should educate people how companies work. Companies have three things, debtholders, equity holders (or owners) and managers.

Debtholders are first in line to get paid and get a specific rate of return. In general, they get no say in how a company is run unless there is a specific set of principles set out contractually when they loan the money. We are all debtholders in AIG and becuase we didn't specify when we loaned them the money, we get no say

Equity holders are last in line to be paid and they get to elect the board of directors and, in some cases, vote on policy issues. We are also equity holders in AIG but my understanding is we have a special class of equity that doesn't get to vote. Our choice, not theirs. Of course, for the amount of money we have spent, we could have bought the company many times over but we didn't.

Management gets to make most decisions and, to some degree, serves at the pleasure of the board of directors. We are not management.

Why does this matter? We (the government) chose to invest in AIG (and many other companies) in a way that gives us no say and now we're outraged that we have no say. Want a say in whether AIG gives bonuses then buy the company. At the moment, it's worth 4.36 billion despite the 180 billion we've put in.

No One Seems To Mention
Who in AIG authorized the political campaign payments to Obama and Chris Dodd and how much it was. Then it might be interesting to know the actual return on the investment, ratio. As in the standard law in economics, the more risky the investment the higher the expected reward. Obviously, the bonuses were the expected payoffs for supporting Dodd and Obama.

It really makes a taxpayer feel good to know that his taxes are earmarked to pay off debts to contributors.

The Good News
In the past, most Americans didn't even know who the Secretary of the Treasury was. They knew nothing of the Federal Reserve, or how it functioned, and the same for the SEC and FDIC.

The current situation has brought the economic structure to top of mind awareness for many Americans, and the more people know, the better.

It's troubling to see Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi(" comically cynical, pitchfork-wielding Congress") as influential in our economic policies, since they represent a fringe element in this country. Of course the same could be said about Tom DeLay a decade ago, but that's another story.

As Americans become more informed as to the structure of our spending and our debt, moderate Democrats will join with moderate Republicans to promote responsible spending, with or without the President's blessing.

Bambi Only Needs Two Senate Repubs
to pass this budget.

The last time he had three Senate Repubs.

The Republicans are either criminally complicit or useless.

I hate both organized criminal enterprises.

my two cents
My friend John Frary ran for Congress last year. He was soundly defeated. In an interview after the election he said, referring to the voters, "Someday they'll get the connection between the government they despise and the congress they keep re-electing."

Let's not forget that in the (limited) debate last month before voting on the 'economic stimulus bill' the senate (note lack of capitals) voted to strip from it a provision that would have banned the bonuses that have caused this (latest) pathetic political food-fight.

I don't know about the rest of you but for me that is a darn good working definition of the word hypocrisy.

97 Mexican trucks?
They aren't a drop in the bucket compared to the 50,000 (?) Canadian trucks. Did they undercut US truckers? YEP, and soon discovered that if you price your self so cheap that you don't make a profit, you either go broke or raise your rates.

In the trucking biz, there is a continuous fluctuation of rates, scrambling for freight. Those who are smart, figure out how to stay in business without giving it away.

The owner of Werner Trucking figured that if each of his 10,000 trucks only made $1 profit per day, he would be $10,000 richer. He undercut the competition and kept his trucks loaded and running with cheap freight.

After a few years, most of his owner operators were in dire straights, and the turn over of company drivers was so high, the losses were piling up like snowdrifts in Buffalo. Werner couldn't afford to upgrade their equipment or get out of the downward spiral they'd put themselves in. I think they're doing better, now, but they had to change their business model.

J.B Hunt trucking did about the same thing, and almost went bankrupt. Smarter people figured out that the bottom line is just that. Below it, is broke!

Just wait until Cap and Trade puts all these extra taxes on the transportation industry. Like all business, they'll pass the higher costs on to YOU, the end consumer.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned....
and the Prez goes on Leno to glad hand and winds up insulting the Special Olympics.

What scares me about these AIG bonuses is that who's to say Congress won't decide to tax everyone who receives a bonus?

But what ticks me off totally is that the same Congressmen who are screaming at the top of their lungs about AIG employees receiving bonuses are the SAME idiots who inserted the clause that granted the bonuses in the original bailout package. Once the bonuses became public, they knew their willing accomplices in the media would carry their water, making dolts like Chris Dodd seem to be the voice of the people.

It's not that the bonuses are "easy for voters to understand," it's that most voters don't pay enough attention to the details and are thus easy to manipulate.

Are The AIG Bonuses Trivial?
Are $165,000,000 in taxpayer-funded-enabled bonuses to managers who ran their company into the ground and helped cause the mess we're in trivial in the grand scheme of things?

Well yes, come to that, a trillion dollars is trivial in the grand scheme of things. All the world is trivial in the grand scheme of things. Isaiah 40:15 -- Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.

That said, the end-'O-the-week meme of "the bonuses are trivial compared to ..." misses a critical point.

The AIG bonuses are something that voters can understand.

More and more voters are watching the news and realizing how completely arrogant and out of touch with reality our Federal government has become (then there's the topic of the 50% income tax hike being proposed in Illinois, but let that go for a moment).

Voters are anxious, realizing that there's nothing they can do about this circus until November, 2010.

All of that and more is why the $165,000,000 in bonuses resonates. Like the House Post Office and check-kiting scandals in the early 1990s, it's something people can clearly understand, and which cannot be explained away.

Thank you Mr. Krauthammer
Your article was such a common sense description of the insanity that we are witnessing.

The posts are just as good as the article. Too many great ones to single out anyone.Thank You All!

There's nothing left to say except.. attend a Tea Party near you. If you cannot, send a tea bag to your Reps. in D.C..

And..., everyone should read "Rules For Radicals" by Saul D. Alinsky. It is Barry's bible.

Why the outrage???
This envy of those who make serious money is irrational. Would you work for a company with one foot in the grave and another on a bananna peel without some incentives?

I've spent many happy hours in truck stops, arguing with drivers grousing about CEO compensation. When some high powered exec makes BIG bucks, it doesn't take a nickel out of my pocket. The directors of those companies hire people to run them who they feel will maximize profits, and there isn't a surplus of highly talented CEO's and competition is fierce. Are some of them slugs and then have to be bought off? Of course, but they then look for someone who would bring value to the company to replace them.

I hope the owner of the little company where I currently am employed makes as much money as possible. I hope he gets wealthier than he already is, because that means more raises, bonuses, equipment and benefits for us workers.

The machine I operate makes a lot of money, because of my knowledge. skill and ingenuity. I've saved their rear ends multiple times, by taking over a job that was seemingly impossible, and getting it done. They pay me considerably more than my supervisor, and he doesn't have a problem with that because he knows my value to the shop. Our competitors even know who I am and have even sought to learn my "secrets." They would hire me in a second, should I get fired or decide to move on.

That's the way it works, boys and girls.

My senator...
Corker from Tennessee is the only one I've heard speak intelligently about our fiscal problems. How can he make a difference when you look at who he is talking to up there in Washingtom.....Idiots like Barny Frank.

Maybe a March on Washington would let BO know his ego needs some massaging. The regular news media isn't going to show any of these tea parties. They might HAVE to show it if the Washington mall were covered in outraged people.

reflection...
on the vote and what it meant. I can feel all the smugness I want for voting for McCain but you know what...I really didn't want him to win. But that was because the choice was no choice. The politicians of this country have got to be put out of business. They are slowing destroying our country. The day should be coming soon when march on Washington will take on a new meaning.

One must conclude...
... that after 50 days, Obama is virtually clueless or is a manipulative demon.
The propensity to say one thing, or give labels to bills, but intend the opposite has been elevated to an art form by him and his cohorts. It is misdirection of the highest order.
In the grand scheme of things, the AIG bonus money amount is indeed trivial, as Dr. Krauthammer shows, but Obama's intention to use the manufactured outrage to seek more executive power over banks is the "end game" of that ploy. Today's online WSJ shows a Fox news video of Obama stating his intention to seek more authority over the financial institutions of this country.
http:// online.wsj (dot) com/video-center
One cannot conclude that Obama is clueless. Rather, he is a calculating, manipulating ideologue and thus, far more dangerous.

Mob rule is all Obama has . . .
What else has he used to date?

Twenty years after, we are headed for October 1917 ourselves.

Unless a person 'Means what they say and says what they mean' then it's "Just Words" with NO VALUE.
Unless paper money 'has collateral' to back it up, it's 'Just Paper' with NO VALUE.
Our government just printed a TRILLION dollar IOU, the 'I' of IOU meaning the American taxpayers the government is 'charging' the TRILLION dollar debt to.
Our government is USING our Country as 'collateral' to put 'VALUE' on the debt they have 'Indebted' the American taxpayers for.
And when American taxpayers are unable to satisfy this debt, the government will seize our property and assets. When those are not enough, our government will start 'selling' off our Country to the highest bidders. America and We the People will be 'SOLD' down the drain.

THE MESSAGE FROM BO
Whereas the self-interest of society is to not sacrifice the many for the few or the one...

BO's precepts are to sacrifice the many for the one or the few

The liberal-diseased mind does not assimilate freedom, free choice, accountability(ownership of choice) response-ability (the ability to respond to the choice) and doing so at no cost to others without their consent.

Democrat Supporters!
Are you all happy now or would you rather our country go down the drain faster? I say, VOTE in more Democrat senators in 2010 so we really can become a banana republic. Will you be happy then?

Let Them Eat Gold.
Back around 2800 BC, in the town of Ur, credit was invented -- get something now, pay for it later.

Another practice was already in operation. When a people desired something, they built up a military force, and took the somethng from a people with a weaker military force.

Whatever happens, humans will get back to that earlier practice. It's the only thing proven to support "getting stuff now, paying for it later."

Rome proved that over their thousand year survival. They tried bailouts, too, but they found that the Legions worked better.

It took immigration to end the success of Rome.

I've noticed an interesting dichotomy
People on the Right seem most often to come down on the side of integrity ... honoring contracts ... honoring ones word ... EVEN when its distasteful! On the Left its the ends justify the means.

Beyond that the new axis of evil (Schumer, Frank, Pelosi, and Reid) seem determined to stir the pitchfork wielding mobs rather than responsibly leading the country.

Let's remember this dichotomy in 2010. Btw, shame on Tom McClintock (sp?) for voting for the outrageous, confiscatory, and unconstitutional House tax bill.

America, America
what happened?? Well - could be the electorate has fallen off the IQ scale - at the lower end.
Some voters read, seek information, analyze, think and then vote. Some have Obama fever - God Help Us! As a senior citizen - I am horrified at the thought of four more years of an Obama presidency - his election has unleashed the already corrupt politicians in Congress to the point of insanity.
Where is Obama - off on another campaign trip - another distraction - the man is a disaster.

THE DEATH OF THE UTOPIAN DREAM
The age of socialism is over. With the collapse of the Soviet Union we live in a post-socialist world. But not for the regressives of the progressive Left as they are trapped in the past seriously lagging behind reality and holding our nation back from its destiny. But this is going to change and the cultural stalemate will end as the Left is about to suffer a rude awakening. Obama is going to crash and burn and give them a bruising experience. An experience which will put an end to their folly, drive them out of the Democratic Party and spell the death of the utopian dream.

Trivialities
I have a sneaking feeling that we could survive a trade war with Mexico.

"$2.4 billion in U.S. trade coming out of 40 states" represents .02% of the $14 trillion economy. Talk about trivial.

I'd rather see the border closed with Mexico than 97 Mexican trucks on American roads.

We're a whore,
a fat, unclean, disease-infested whore all perfumed and decked out in discarded walmart finery stepping out of a caredboard box under some freeway bridge and walking down the boulevard like we really own the world.

We did not inherit these criminals, we elected them time after time, they are us, our reflection in the gilded mirrors that line the corridors of power. We have nothing anymore, our obligations far exceed our total assets and the will to do the right thing, i.e., to work our way out of the hole honestly and as hard as we can. Covered as we are in glitter and denial, we put on call girl airs because for a long time we were the only game in town.

Wildly inflating our way into the reality of our condition will bring not just the US to her knees but much of the world who has been only too eager to throw cash at us as long as we used the cash right away to buy from them our glass beads and trinkets.

Now we're going to pay them back with Monopoly money, literally, because that's going to soon be our actual currency. What can they do, get mad? Use the "withdrawal" method?

Unnerved By The Federal Reserve
One day after the Federal Reserve strode into uncharted territory with a plan to buy Treasury bonds, investors remained more unnerved than inspired by its bold move.

Rather than ignite optimism among investors, the Fed's plan rekindled their fears about inflation, since the central bank is printing money and pumping it into the economy.

The dollar was the main casualty, extending its losses against a range of currencies. Traditional hedges against rising prices -- among them gold, silver and oil -- rose.

Stocks fell, erasing some of the gains they registered in the wake of Wednesday's announcement. Some traders blamed skepticism about whether the Fed's bond purchases will work, while others said that stocks were due for a pause after their torrid rally in recent days.

"It's difficult to visualize the market running straight up from here because of the absence of fundamental good news from companies, because of the geopolitical risks, which are very much evolving and because of the potential threat of increased inflation," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors.

Gold futures jumped to a three-week high, gaining almost 8% for $958.30 per troy ounce. Silver futures surged 13%, their largest one-day percentage gain in over two decades. The price of oil rose to its highest level this year, floating above $50 a barrel to $51.61.

Hate to say this but
Vrauthammer is right about the contracts. As I have heard, not all of the company failed, just the part that did took the rest down with it. And for all I know the bonuses might be like the 5% annual bonus we sales clerks got every year just because it was January. (Until the company got tired of it and cancelled it out one year. Oh well,) One might be able to withhold a performance based bonus. One might also question AIG taking out a loan to pay abonus (paying it with bailout money.) But for the government to unilaterally abrogate agreements is dangerous. You trade law for fiat.

Look who's in Charge now!
An empty suit in the White House, venal fools in charge of Congress and a citizenry that can't differentiate between 'million and TRILLION'. Our newsmedia/reporters are like animated Barbie/Ken dolls - trendy and vacuous!
What has happened to our ounce great nation. I already miss Bush, would you believe. At least he was 'REAL', not like these phony hypocrites that know only one thing: SPEND AMERICA INTO OBLIVION!

missing the point
The dollar figure doesn't matter. It's the idea that a company that couldn't continue without borrowing money from you and me, is able to pay out bonuses. My company didn't borrow any money, but we're not getting any bonuses this year.
We're sick of being lied to by the President, and the Congress. These people don't deserve our trust or our respect. We deserve better. THAT'S THE POINT!

The AIG Tax Is Unconstitutional

1) They were valid and binding contracts executed and entered by and between AIG and the exexutives, individually. The compensation packages were disclosed publicly over a year ago through AIG's SEC filings and in the company's Annual Report.

2) The Constitution specifically prohibits ex poste facto legislation (retroactive) for punitive purposes and, secondly, it prohibits a Bill of Attainder (targeting an individual or group for specific and punitive punishment or taxation).

3) Lastly, since the retention bonuses were actually inducements to certain individuals to remain with AIG so as to resolve toxic derivative contracts, which they were able to knock off over $1T in bad contracts, any express action to seize these assets may violate the Takings Clause.

Unchartered Territory - II

China previously expressed concern over their investments and, in a way, were rewarded yesterday by the Fed's actions because they made $700bn in one day. Today, Russia has voiced grave concern about the stability of our dollar because of the similarities it sees with its own disastrous past.

At the rate we are going, the poor will NEVER see parity with the "middle class", who will likewise lose their buying power. The next shoe to drop is going to be the collapse of state pension funds, which will wipe out the retirement savings of millions.

Any collapse of or significant instability in the dollar will make it nearly impossible to borrow overseas. Should this occur, Obama can say goobye to his dreams of universal healthcare, cap-n-tax, and likely card check, which will result in a replay of the effects of the 1936 Wagner Act and other workplace rules that led to the 1937 recession within the Great Depression.

Folks, this is not a partisan issue. We are beyond name calling. Our future is at stake. Please call or write your representatives and tell them to quit spending. Unfortunately, we can't dictate to the Fed. so spending cessation is our only hope.

Unchartered Territory - I

All that is going on is a distraction to the main and, without being pollyannaish, the most dire situation that we have seen in decades, if not in our history. As I indicated below, the Fed is printing money at an alarming rate. Understand, NEVER in the history of monetary policy has a government been able to effectively time inflationary tools to counteract deflation. NEVER. We are either looking at the most devastating recession that we have ever seen in this country or another depression AND this is only if we quit spending. If the Fed continues to print money and the government continues to spend it, not only will we have inflation and a depression, but the dollar will collapse. Most people do not believe that there can be a depression and inflation at the same time. This is simply not the case. Any cursory review of the Weimar Government or modern day Zimbabwe proves that inflation can occur in a depression.

According to sources from within the Congressional Budget Office, Obama is going to receive devastating news tomorrow on both the economy and his proposed budget. The new projections put his budget AT MORE THAN FOUR TRILLION DOLLARS!

"Inflation, Extravagance, Bankruptcy."

John Maynard Keynes campaigned for budgetary flexibility and abandonment of the gold standard for at least a decade before publishing his General Theory in 1936. And he was a genius of rhetoric as well as of economics. He could explain his ideas with equal brilliance in the abstractions of Treasury mandarins or the straightforward language of common people: "Housewives of England, for every shilling you save, you put a man out of work for a day."

But Keynes's arguments were ignored by democratic governments the world over. Gordon Brown describes a document in the Treasury archives in which Keynes's proposals for saving Britain from depression were dismissed by the Permanent Secretary with three scribbled words: "Inflation, Extravagance, Bankruptcy."

Most people in the 1930s agreed with the Treasury that Keynes was irresponsible and deluded. And that is what many believe today -that a debt crisis cannot be cured by borrowing; that saving is virtuous while spending is wasteful; that printing money creates inflation and that the best response to recession is to fire government bureaucrats.

If these beliefs become conventional wisdom among voters, then coping with the economic crisis will become as difficult as it was in the 1930s - at least for democracies. And here we come to the real horror.

In the 1930s only one country put expansionary policies fully into practice. Hitler's Germany.

FANNIE MAE JUST LIKE AIG
BIG FAT FAILED FANNIE
This is just plain wrong!

Yes but...
I agree with Dr. Krauthammer that we need to have a perspective, that greater issues face our country than 98 trucks or a few million in compensation. Nevertheless, these issues (especially the AIG bonuses) are instructive. We are able to see just how inept, feckless, dishonest, shortsighted, unfocused, and downright stupid our "leaders" are. We are able to see just how badly the Dems are at governing.

For example, trying to recover the bonuses via taxes is simply kicking the can down the road. There will be lawsuits and the government will likely lose because the new law appears unconstitutional. This will cost us in litigation fees and lost productivity. But today's Congress doesn't care since these consequences will happen after the next election cycle.

Stop The Insanity!

The Fed. Res. and the fed. govt. have tripled the amount of money in circulation in the last 6 months. Then, we have Scamulus, the mortgage bailout, the omnibus bill, and god help us, Mugabe's freakin =$4.6 budget.

Yesterday, the Fed announced:

1) It would buy $300bn worth of treasury bonds so as to lower mortgage rates, which hasn't been done since the inflationary period of the 1960s.

2) Another $750bn to buy toxic assets, which is on top of the $500bn already spent.

3) Up to another $1T for bank stabilization.

$2T for universal healthcare.

$2T for the stupid and useless cap-n-tax.

We have a national debt over $12bn.

Unfunded obligations for social security that are between $56T and $75T.

This in unsustainable.

"How Bad Is It Really?"

The bonuses are disgusting, but there was a Keystone Kops element to the White House reaction. Its yes-we-can, no-we-can't act on canceling the payoffs was clumsy, especially when the President said he wanted the bonuses stopped. It made for good sound bites before an aide called the whole thing off, saying it was too late, legal contracts, yada, yada.

On most days, such White House fumbling would be big news, but the real outrage is that the bonuses represent a fraction of the taxpayer money consumed by AIG. Yet nobody, including Obama or the Bush administration, which started the bailout, is even talking about how to end the gravy train or what the final cost could be.

Nearly $180 billion is already gone, and there will be huge additional losses because AIG still holds a portfolio said to contain $1.6 trillion worth of lethal credit default swaps. Against that, the bonus money is chump change.

Curiously, you haven't heard much about the spent $180 billion or whether there was a better way. Maybe the pols don't have a clue.

Or maybe they figure it's safer to focus on the bonus angle because "bonus" is such a red meat word. Put a name and face on the people with the gall to demand such dough and the pols can ride the public anger like a surfer rides a wave.

But there's a third option, and that's where my money is. I bet you haven't heard much about the real cost of settling AIG's instruments of wealth destruction because Washington doesn't want you to know how bad it really is.
