California is Liberalism's "Canary in the Coal Mine"

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Once, California was known as the “Golden State.” No more. It’s struggling with a fiscal crisis of epic proportions. And voters are so disgusted with the ineptitude and waste of a state legislature dominated by liberal Democrats that they are poised to vote down a $16 billion tax increase and a slew of propositions allegedly intended to beat back fiscal Armageddon.

If residents of the other 49 states haven’t focused on California’s plight yet, they should. In a real sense, California has become liberalism’s “canary in the coal mine.” It is an instructive – and frightening – warning of the toll exacted by the kind of leftism now in vogue in Washington, D.C..

Put simply, California is in desperate fiscal straits because it has become a place where government works for only two constituencies: Those who need public assistance, and unions. Sacramento is so busy responding to the needs of the one and the demands of the other that the legitimate expectations of regular, taxpaying citizens have been completely ignored.

For union members, life is good. California teachers earn 25% more than the national average, even though some of the most incompetent, indifferent or downright dangerous of them cannot be fired because of concessions won by the teachers’ unions. The SEIU is so powerful that some of its members were able to listen in on a phone call between the Obama administration and the state – which resulted in the President’s threat to withhold stimulus money if the cash-strapped state made even modest cuts in the salaries of unionized home health care employees. In fact, state government is routinely held hostage by public employee unions; not surprising when one considers that California is home to 356,000 state workers – 9.3 of them for every 1,000 residents.

Similarly, if one is an illegal alien or in need of public aid, California works well, offering a panoply of health and other welfare services with few questions asked. Just last week, in fact, Democrats in the state legislature opposed requiring welfare recipients who failed to complete a drug treatment program to take random drug tests in order to continue receiving benefits. And California spends in excess of $5 billion per year on illegal immigrants and their families, offering a menu of health care services that includes non-emergency care, long-term nursing home care, and abortions.

To pay for all of this, California has the highest top personal income tax rate and the highest sales tax rate in the country. Corporate taxes are high, too. And yet regular taxpayers have little to show for the exorbitant sums extracted from them by state government.

How times change. Forty years ago, California’s roads and schools were the envy of the country. Now, of course, highways are jammed, and schools languish near the bottom of nationwide rankings. Hospitals are overcrowded, as are prisons. And contrary to the claims of those on the left, the problem isn’t inadequate “investment,” i.e., spending. Forty years ago, the state spent $1240 for every man, woman and child in the state, in today’s inflation-adjusted dollars. Now, it spends more than double that amount – $3200 per person – even as ordinary citizens’ quality of life has plummeted. No wonder voters are poised to reject the politicians’ propositions, which would require another $16 billion in tax increases!

What’s become apparent from the California debacle is that government is perhaps capable of doing a little bit for everyone, or everything for a few. But liberalism’s golden promise of an efficient government that does everything for everyone is nothing but a pipe dream – and an expensive, destructive one at that.

If Americans are smart, they’ll learn from California’s example. There’s something eerily familiar about President Obama’s close embrace of government employees and unions – along with his historically budget-busting “investments” in all manner of services – coupled with his call for higher taxes.

In California, we’ve seen it all before. And believe me, it isn’t pretty.

CORRUPTION, UNIONS AND WELFARE
My beloved birth state which I moved from when it became more like a third world crap hole, covered in graffiti by warring gang members, has become a Leftist paradise. Corrupt Unions like the SEIU and their partner, ACORN, are given too much power and have bankrupted the state, along with the insane "entitlement" and welfare programs. The teachers are the highest paid in this country and their students rate second from the BOTTOM in test scores. Unless the government is purged of the leftist nutwads who have destroyed California's economy, it will continue to sink until it looks more like Mexico than a once proud leader of our nation. It is heartbreaking to remember what it was once like.

Great Day for the Golden State
By a margin of 66 to 34, California voters defeated the handiwork of our Democrat dominated State Assembly.

Who's coughing now?

Here in Los Angeles, in a "non partisan" City Attorney race, the conservative-backed Carmen Trutanich beat the snot out of Jack Weiss, who had the full support of our Democratic mayor, Tony Villar. (Mr. Villar changed his name to Antonio Villaraigosa. Call me cynical, but put me on the record as one who condemns the Democratic party for their style of identity politics)

It's hotter than hell in the San Fernando Valley this afternoon, but even so; I'm feelin' the 2010-2012 snowball picking up some speed, and I'm likin' it.

PublicEmployeeUnions
must be banned, it is ridiculous for a public employee to be able to unionize and hold the taxpayer hostage, whether State or Federal.

Phooey on the unions and I do hope the California taxPAYER sends the Demonrats and their union bosses a strong message of repudiation.

The only good Demonrat, is one bounced out of office.

CA Does Suck
Great article, true in every way, but there's much more to add to the litany of failed projects and programs. I did my part today by voting 'No' on all tax hikes. T.E.A.!

Uh-Oh
Another earthquake--4.1
damn, I live right on the fault line.

California is
f*cked six ways from sunday. About the only thing that state has going for it is the weather and beaches. The people suck, their sport teams suck, the economy sucks, the government sucks, California sucks. Congratulations for being the prototype of the Liberal dream. California = fail

California Again Proves Marxism's Evil
"Moderates" are tools that lib-nazis use to incrementally move toward their ultimate goal of international totalitarian marxism. "Reaching across the aisle" only works in one direction. Lib-nazis never compromise, they always force the other side to move. In the 80 years since FDR infected America with socialism, the GOP has never done one thing to reduce the size and power of government. Not even under Reagan. America's illegitimate political system is incapable of reform. Our institutions are infested with liberal fascists. You can neither do business with, nor reason with lib-nazis. Secession and revolution are the only ways to restore the Constitution.

So Sad,
So True.

Watch America.
Learn other 49.
Save yourselves.

REAL Change
Well said here. As California goes, so goes the country...except for gay marriage, surprisingly.

I read another fantastic piece similar to this by a new, young conservative writer who attempted in this new piece to better define free market capitalism. Check it out!

http://robbymoeller.blogspot.com/2009/05/free-free-markets- part-ii.html

Thank God!
Thank God I left California 50 years ago. OK, my parents left when I was very young, but at least I never went back there to live.

California Is Never Coming Back
It cannot as long as the majority vote Dem, which they will because nearly all are sucking on the public t+t in some fashion.

CA COULD come back IF: she cut state, city and county employee wages drastically, stopped paying union wages to public works workers, cut income and sales tax, drastically lowered entitlements, controlled the border, stopped making ridiculous enviro regs and got tough on gangs.

In other words, get the businesses back and send the drones packing.

Like This Would Happen?

Sarah Palin Was Asked To Helt Retire Hillary Cllinton's Debt?!?!

In an unusual attempt to forge an alliance between two of the most prominent political families in American politics, John Coale, a Washington-area Democratic donor and onetime adviser to Sarah Palin , urged the conservative Alaska governor to use her political action committee to help retire the presidential campaign debt of Hillary Clinton.

Coale, a wealthy trial attorney and the husband of Fox News talk show host Greta Van Susteren, approached Palin with the improbable plan in February while in Alaska with his wife, who was taping an interview with the former Republican vice presidential nominee.

One more thing about CA
Another way that California serves as an example: flight. As California is emptied of productive citizens who tire of paying ever-increasing taxes, their funding problems will only get worse. Let this be a lesson to the United States liberal. You can't raise taxes forever before citizens (and their wealth), even patriots begin leaving the US in droves because their effort and wealth goes much farther when spent and earned abroad. The only way to stop it is to wake up to the economic realities of the ridiculous presumptions you continually make about the state of the world. No matter how much you spend on poverty and 'inequality' both will still exist when you're finished squandering everyone else's wealth. I don't question your concern or motivations, only your intelligence and ability to grasp reality.

Thank You, Obama, Libs & Progressives

For the first time since 2005, Republicans and Conservatives are tied with Democrats, Liberals and Progressives for the first time since 2005, according to new Gallup Poll.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/15370/Party-Affiliation.aspx

Just think. It only took a little more than 100 days of Obamanomics, Obamunism, and the Liberals in Congress to do it.

Interesting, would that same dividing line apply that an individual born in Hawaii say 47 or so years ago. When that person was born a Conspiracy hatched where that individuals mother concocted a story because he really wasnt born in Hawaii, but the mother knew he would 47 years later be president so she divised a scheme to get the state of Hawaii to go along and countless others in their diabolical scheme. That same dividing line, i get it.

Logic will never make
sense to you Taft. Our teacher's union is completely out of control. Right now California is paying for hundreds of people that can't teach children anymore, because they are pedophiles or criminals, and we can't fire them. But they are still on the payroll. Weren't you a teacher Taft? Hmmmmm

"Some people are always looking at the bad side of things"? You are funny. California is bankrupt. Is there a good side to that?

I don't know what part of California you live in, but where I live the people from Mexico are bringing their violence with them. There are always good and bad people that illegally enter California. But how much bad can we take? Only a fool would say that they are all hard workers. Do you know them all personally? Do you know the illegals that are in our prison system right now? Have you talked to the lady in San Francisco (an illegal killed her husband and her two sons)how she feels about violent illegals that enter California? What, no compassion for her Taft?

You are a typical liberal/progressive. You act like you have compassion, but not for fellow Americans.

Taft
" I don't know what challenges you mean, oracle, involving illegals in our schools."

I'll give you a clue, Taft. My son "taught" junior high science for three years in the Stockton area. A large percentage of his sturdents were illegal aliens who would come and go and could not speak or write in English. Only 6% of the students at that school passed the Federal proficiency exams for their grade level. The large percentage of illegal alien students wasn't the only problem faced by that school, but it was a very significant one. My son could not begin to teach middle school science material to students who could not read or write at a second grade level. He got tired of babysitting and went back to college to complete his doctorate.

Taft

"I think we should cut taxes."

Agreed.

"1. No more military bases built around the world. Do we really need a mew base in Italy? Stop using our drones in Pakistan! And, let Japan and Korea and the rest of them use there own troops for protection."

Maybe, not in Italy. Stop using drones? So, you don't want to get Osama bin Laden, members of AQm and prevent the Taliban (especially as they are less than 60 mi. from Islamabad) from getting Pakistan's nuclear weapons? It the Taliban gets a hold of the nukes, it will threaten the entire world.

"2. Stop subsidizing farmers and corporations."

Agreed, no farm subsidies, no more bailouts, no more takeovers of private companies, no more deals for the Big 3, no more abrogation of contracts, no more governmental seizure of private property, and no more union sweet heart deals, etc.

"3. Have a very realistic gun regulation and save our children and Police and thousands of dollars."

I have a 2nd Amendment right, which was further supported in the Heller Decision, to own guns. I am responsible and my children cannot get access to them.

"4. Nationalized health care. Americans pay far more than any other country for far less. It's crazy all we spend."

Taft, I have lived in the UK and France, both have nationalized healthcare. No one with any money go to public hospitals or see public doctors.

What does Obama and Congress have on the table to pay for their healthcare insurance program?

Tax on sugar, including juices.

Taxes on beer and wine BY THE OUNCE.

More sin taxes.

Taxes on private healthcare insurance or on private health benefits.

Rationed healthcare.

Bureaucrats in Washington, who will decide what kind of treatment, drugs, doctor visits, tests, surgeries, etc., you will be allowed.

Wagner and Oracle
What state doesn't have teacher's unions. You don't make sense. California is hurting now, but it will rebound. And,frankly, I'd rather live here than in many other states. Some people always look at the bad side of things, and there are far too many good things to consider.

I don't know what challenges you mean, oracle, involving illegals in our schools. They work hard and are really nice people. The flow had stopped to some degree with all the wall talk but now, with the drug wars, we're getting families escaping the violence.

already the most corrupt
re:
4. Nationalized health care. Americans pay far more than any other country for far less. It's crazy all we spend.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Our health care DOES cost TWICE as much per capita as any other country, BUT guvment/single payer is NOT the answer. Medicare/Caid is already the most corrupt social program and dreadfully inefficient... so the left wants guvment to take it ALL over?!?!

Show me the successful model elsewhere-- New Zealand? England? Canada? NOT! Hell, the Canadians all come here for surgery when it counts.

Our cost structure is too high because the powers that be (including M. Deities) have been killing the Golden Goose with feeding frenzy greed. Litigation costs is surely an issue-- simply watch the myriad ads on national TV urging suits about Mesothelioma, harmful drugs, etc.

Conservatives want New world order
Conservatives deny that 9/11 may have been an inside job. But that is exactly how the bilderberg works. How convenient that OBL was a CIA contact in Afghanistan during the Soviet war in the 80's. There were predictions months before by Alex Jones that the govt needed to concoct some terrorist activity to keep the masses in check. The instrument discussed at the time were airplanes. They just took it to another level. OBL holed up in a cave in Pakistan and the mightiest country in the world cannot find him, thats hard to believe. The real manipulators are the Rich Elites in both parties. The difference is that we are all being equally manipulated but using different philosophies, different means. The right wing Elites are giving you that same Conspiracy babble against the left, the left is being giving its babble. they are using us, pitting us against each other so they can achieve their devilish goals of culling the herds and creating a one world government where only the elite have rights, we will be subjects. They will do as they please with us. Yet we continue to fight each other when the real enemy is as plain as day, wealthy elites. This econnomic recession was planned, the real estate bubble, planned, both the Iraq and Afghan wars were planned. The elites are manipulating us and we are wasting our energy on each other. Yet Conservatives insist on fighting liberal and blaming liberals while the elites work their evil in the shadows. Get your sh!t together Conservatives, you are fighting the wrong fight. We must stop the "Shadow Government" from running our lives. The Rich elitists are the enemy not each other.

Mario

DEAR CA AND NY LIBS
Liberal policies have nearly bankrupted your states (Michigan included). If you have liberal tendencies, please stay where you are. Liberals seem to believe they have the "better way" and bring their bad habits with them to taint wherever they go. We're happy the way we are at this point.

Thank you,
Mark, a conservative Utahn

P.S., Taft, yes, as a mormon, I would probably get on your nerves.

daft the retarded
funny how the only threat about elections being canceled is coming from your side.

It seems that your messiah, you know the fool, the same one who cut your lip when he pulled up his zipper, seems to be the one who believes no crisis should not be taken advantage of.

But we have never seen any elected officials from the right who find so many buddies out there amongst the various tinhorn dictators like you new god and savior, flap ears the fraud from chicago.

Funny how flap ears sees castro, I wanna jiohad, chavez, and ortega are amongst his new best buds.

Plus we have never had a president who considered himself a citizen of the world rather than an american first. Perhaps there may be something afterall to the associations your god, obamarxist, had with the haters, rev wrong, louie farrakhan, pfleger, ayers, as well as his chicago pal dorothy cone who supports whites giving blacks reparation payments

But it is you messiah who has stated the need for a new internal security force that is the size of the current military. But with your love and devotion to flap ears there is the hope you will join his brown shirts and defend the messiah and his desire to disarm lawful americans.

When you followers of the messiah decide to wage war against lawful americans you will find we will have more than enough courage and firepower to finish off union punks and socialists like you

hey Taft... check out Wagner's post
at 5:43... a knowing comment on teachers in Mexifornia from a resident and lucid thinker.

Your schools do have some particular challenges with ILLEGAL aliens, but that is partly the state's own fault.

Too few truly appreciate how the ILLEGAL alien invasion EGREGIOUSLY threatens our socio-economic well being AS A NATION... this is exacerbated by the PC liberal ilk which wants ILLEGALS here to vote and become dependent on guvment, from which libs get their power to redistribute wealth and aggrandize themselves on the backs of the real producers.

Concerned readers might check out my earlier posts here (8:46... also at 8:30, 9:09, and 9:15 about the VERY serious socio-economic burdens of ILLEGAL aliens to America) to see how YOU can easily get engaged to help save YOUR country-- before it becomes hopelessly too late.

Doctor Fixit - You're Wrong
about there being too many of them.

Taft is an example of why California is
bankrupt. Taft, just a tip for you, but there are no rightwing fascist. If you look at when American was founded and where we are now, we are all extreme leftwing nuts. It is a joke to think otherwise. We are almost at the point of total government control. What party wants to take over private enterprise? That would be the progressive/liberals. What party wants to unionize everything? That would be the liberal/progressives. What party wants government to control more? That would be the liberal/progressives. Congratulations Taft, we are now all slaves to the government.

I bet when California gets too bad and you lose your union pension or some other government funded benefit, you will move to a state that is working well. But only to destroy that too.

Drifter
Utah is a very pretty state but don't the Mormons get on your nerves?

doctor
Dang, that was an inspirational post, but there isn't going to be any blood running down the street just yet, we still have these things called elections. As far as fascists go, its the radical wingnut fascists who are probably more apt to take over.

Democrats to the end
The angry electorate will defeat the tax increasing propositions on Tuesday, but next cycle you can expect another election lopsided with Democrat victories. The takers now outnumber the producers. The madness is now being implemented at the National level. Where is John Galt?

Revolution Is Coming!
America's illegitmate political system is incapable of reform. Our institutions are infested with liberal fascists. You can neither do business with, nor reason with liberal fascists. Indulging in fantasies of killing them all is useless. There are too many of them. You have to get away from these sociopaths. Revolution and secession are the way back to freedom. Forget voting and politics. It is delusional.

Singing the California Blues
I live in California with all of these sanctimonious "progressives". We have teachers making over 100,000 a year for 9 months of work, long vacations and great medical benefits. Yet, we are not seeing any positive results for paying these people these excessive salaries. The drop-out rate in California is huge.

You could give these progressives all of the evidence that their ideas don't work and they will never admit it.

I always cringe when I hear "get out the vote" in California. Progressives want uniformed idiots voting. It is always to their advantage. I actually had someone tell me that she always votes for bond measures, because it makes her "feel good". I asked her if she knew where the money for the bonds came from. And she had no idea that it was from the taxpayer. Progressive never stop to think about where the money comes from.

If they try the "get out the vote" project in your state, you have been forewarned. Your state ,too, could become California.

p.s. I voted, as I always do, against all propositions on the ballot.

California...
We saw this coming years ago and left CA in 2006, after 46 years. For the last three years, CA has experienced a net population loss, even with illegals streaming in.

The only reason we ever look back is that we have family members, still trapped, there.

Challenge for liberals:
Serious challenge for liberals:

Can any of you idiots come up with a solution to any problem we face in this world that doesn't involve skyrocketing taxes and a more oppressive government?

How liberals 'think'
Everyone has to understand how liberals 'think' (or whatever you would call the perversions of reality that stream through their puny brains).

When times are good, and tax revenues are shooting up, liberals all start spending more and more and more so that any potential surplus vanishes in the blink of an eye.

But when the pendulum swings the other way, and tax revenues are swinging the other way, any RATIONAL (read: NOT liberal) person would say that is a good time to get rid of all that excess spending enacted during the good times and return to the pre-bloated budget. Of course, we're talking about liberals, not rational human beings. When times are tough, their first notion is MORE TAXES!

Forget California, take a look here at the CommonTheft of Taxachusetts. Per capita, Massachusetts, between state and local budgets, spends more than any other state (or we're damn near the top of the list). We've got all kinds of crazy, worthless programs in this backwards state. We're freakin' giving free cars to people on welfare, ferchrisesake!

Amusingly, in our last state election, we had a ballot initiative to dump the state income tax (Question 1). The power mad fascists in our state house said that if we voted "yes" on Question 1, our property taxes would go up, our sales tax would go up, tolls on the Mass Pike (which are unconstitutional, by the way) would go up, and all other taxes and fees would go up.

Of course we voted "no", and the next day our congress changed the state motto to "thank you sir, may I have another"...our property tax is going up, sales tax is going up, Mass Pike tolls are going up, all of the taxes are going up.

HELP! I've been deported!
I grew up here.
I now live in a place where English is spoken by a minority.
I learned to speak Spanish in high school.
Now I HAVE to.

If California is about to slide into the Pacific Ocean, then why did the CA Assemby vote to give itself TWO PAY RAISES IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS?

And, how are those sales of San Quentin, the Colosseum, and other state facilities going? And, the sea otter program going?

Further, what up with your 9th Circuit, that just allowed an extraordinary rendition case involving terrorism and espionage to proceed?

If you guys want to interfere in foreign policy, then I think that you guys should keep control of San Quentin and take the nice manmade disaster-makers and imprison them in prison there.

One overlooked factor is the
gerrymandering of legislative districts in California. Those who might oppose the liberal-left brainless politicians, have their vote smothered by districts that area manipulated to eliminate any competition. Add to that, an incredibly inept Republican party that consistently elects social conservatives in the primaries who are, essentially, unelectable in the general election.

Notice that during the past decade, only those politicians who have termed out under term limits or those who have decided for themselves to retire have left their positions. The number of districts that have changed parties in contested elections can be counted on the fingers of one hand. (With 40 Senators and 80 Assembly members.) Congressional districts are similarly lacking in competitiveness.

Sadly, while partisan politicians "love" safe districts, the result is that all Californians suffer from noncompetitive gerrymandered districts. When there is competition, each party's candidates must justify and provided supporting arguments for a position. A rubber-stamp election allows fuzzy thinking and lack of political awareness.

I've already voted against all the propositions (in my mail-in ballot). While I don't look forward to the state's financial chaos that will ensue, it is past time that the tax payers and voters to just say NO to the political idiots of both parties in Sacramento.

One of the plans (should the propositions fail) is that 19,000 prisoners will be released. We're comforted that "they're all illegals and will be deported" once they're released. Well why are we paying to house these illegals in prison? Why aren't they sent home after conviction?

why calif continues to fail
calif has enough oil to supply the state's need for the next 250 years, yet the idiots there fully believing alldull's idiocy would rather import oil from foreign sources than use their own domestic supply.

Seems that if calif would use their own domestic supply they could also increase not only their tax base but employ thousands of workers

Thanks.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Personally, I think that American CEO's ARE overpaid, and it is embarrassing to screw up as some do and still get megabucks.

HOWEVER, it is NOT CEO pay that laid waste to the Big 3 auto companies... instead, union largess/greed has ruined them.

Last year Toyota and GM sold the same # of cars-- Toyota made billions while GM hemorrhaged billions. The difference? Labor at GM was twice as expensive-- $150,000 per year counting bennies for H.S. grads. Yet they line up for those jobs at Toyota here in America paying half as much.

I teach college econ-- you CANNOT make the numbers work with that kind of labor cost structure. We have effectively subsidized the Big 3 for years, and even Toyota's really cost more than they might/should because of the minimally-competitive oligopoly.

When I lived in Louisiana, I took many trips to the Gulf Coast. While there, some tourists complained about the balls of tar and oil that washed up on shore.

I explained that those balls of oil were reported washing ashore already in the 1800s. They were naturally occurring.

My Californian Friends
. . . have been telling me for decades that California is a window on tomorrow, that what is done in California this year will be done in all America in ten years. I'm hearing less of that nowadays, but for the first time I'm beginning to think they are right, unfortunately.
The only difference I can see between California's budget and Obama's is that Obama can print money to pay for his, with the horribly predictable result of inflation ramping up to double digit levels.

A RINO with Kennedesque thinking and a Liberal State Govt. Of course, he going to say that. It is kind of like Obama saying, "we will fall into a Great Depression, if I don't have a stimulus bill of $800bn on my desk tomorrow". Did he sign the $787bn bill the next day? No, he waited four days and it still has failed to do anything for the economy.

"in other words it is a revenue problem."

But, you are losing revenue because of your insane spending, your burgeoning welfare class, your illegal problem, lower your debt - which will allow you to also decrease your debt service. Start with these: And, people will return to CA.

A bailout for CA will come with strings attached. Just like with AIG, the banks, the insurance companies, Chrysler and GM.

This Is a Great, Passionate Thread
For over a year I've been blogging the same ideas Carol just finally caught on to: As goes Cacafornia, so goes the nation. And everytime I post on this theme, there is virtually NO comback from the libs. Nada. Nothing they can say about the absolute FACT that Obama's "vision" of change has already been tried and failed in our once Golden State, now turned into pile of caca.

But here's another sad fact: Californian libs believe the problems are all....are you ready for this?....the Republicans' fault!!! Yup. High taxes? Poor education? You name it. In the brain-dead minds of the libs, it's all the Pubs' fault.

My guess the nation at large will assume the same loony lie. BO's creating that meme right now. Everything that goes wrong will be blamed on what he "inherited from Bush."

No one will own up to the truth: Proud Progressives (as Hillary calls herself) will turn the whole country to poo-poo.

Revenues to treasury:
2003 - $1.7 trillion

2006 - $2.4 trillion
2007 - $2.56 trillion

Using terms like such and such tax cut cost the government x amt. of money is absurd. No, it's not their money to begin with, so it can't COST the government. It costs the person that earned it.

When we reach the point where an oil company goes and explores for oil, extracts the oil, refines the oil and sells the oil, only to have the government, who does NOTHING, actually make more money on that oil in the form of taxes than the oil company makes on it, and nearly 1/2 the population look at the oil company as evil, then this country is done!

Almost Forgot!
You can't cut the LAPD either... there's a reason LA has four times the armed occupation force that IRAQ ever had... even during the initial invasion.

My redistricting proposal
Divide the state into two tall halves, and the remaining district lines drawn with perfect horizontal lines running West to East. Absolutely no gerrymandering!

What I've seen in California
I'm serious - you can probably go in any city or county office and easily cut 80% of the existing staff. You've got all these people who accomplish nothing except to collect a paycheck. Keep in mind that there's over 300,000 public employees in this state.

Since you call yourself a liberal, I guess I shouldn't be surprised by your total lack of reading comprehension. Here is the description of the chart from your link:

i am not saying high tax rates are the answer but it is clear that the statistical data proves that cutting taxes does not generate the revenue that many conservatives claim.

here is a study from 2000-2004 that shows cutting taxes increased the deficit.

The three rounds of tax-cut legislation (in 2001, 2002, and 2003) account for a substantial
share of the nation’s current deficit.
• The tax cuts would reduce revenues by $276 billion in 2004, according to Joint
Committee on Taxation estimates. Further, the interest costs associated with the
enacted tax cuts would
equal $20 billion, using
Congressional Budget
Office assumptions. The
total cost would therefore
be $297 billion, or 2.6
percent of the economy (or
GDP).
• Using these estimates, the
cost of the tax cuts account
for more than half of the
2004 deficit, which CBO
estimates to be $477 billion
or 4.2 percent of GDP. Based on these estimates, the deficit would have been 1.6
percent of GDP without the tax cuts.
Table 1
Tax Cuts and the 2004 Deficit
(excluding economic effects)
As Percent
of GDP
2004 deficit with tax cuts 4.2%
Cost of tax cuts 2.6%
2004 deficit without tax cuts 1.6%
Source: CBPP calculations based on data from the Joint
Committee on Taxation and the Congressional Budget Office
v
•when the cost of all legislation enacted since 2001 is considered, the tax cuts are found to cost
more than all program increases combined, including increases in military expenditures,
homeland security, and education spending.

Me:
You could have had any type of tax policy on the eve of one of the most revolutionary concepts in history since the invention of the auto, which was the dot.com boom. The early-mid 80s did not have this factor and still revenues increased.

Also, the state of Texas has created more jobs in 2008 than ALL of the other 49 states COMBINED. Now was that because of low taxes or high taxes?

It's no coincidence that Texas has no state income tax and is one of only 3 other states that are about to lower other taxes.

Look at Ireland's economy after they dramatically lowered tax rates. They actually had a name for it. It was called the Irish miracle.

If high taxes were the answer, then CA, NY, etc. would be swimming in tax revenues and great economic activity.

And, because of the tax burdens in California, you are losing residents to neighboring states. So, your unemployment rate will further increase and tax revenues will decrease, anyway.

You guys need to pass a balanced budget Amendment, stop the insane spending, cut your tax rates, have a smaller government, etc. If you do that, you will keep your residents. Drill offshore where you will have great paying jobs, with almost no pollution other than that which washes up on your shores from from naturally occurring seepage.

Do you understand there is one state in the union that created more jobs last year than the entire nation, has no state income tax, little regulatory schemes, and a budget surplus?

Say hello to the Republic of Texas.

Even in Louisiana, we have not increased tax rates, have lower unemployment than in the blue states, fail to run deficits, etc.

Christianlib
Please wake up and actually look at the link in your earlier post. That chart has nothing to do with surpluses. It shows that CA spent 11-15% more than they had budgeted. Gray Davis was recalled after the largest budget deficit in our history. The deficits were reduced some in the succeeding years but mostly through more borrowing. No one wants to lend CA any more money. Since they can't print money and are having difficulty borrowing more, how about try a new idea like actually reducing spending.

The Best Part
Is that the voters of the state keep electing these people to office. Democrats (and Republicans) both have a stranglehold on their respective districts and the gerrymandering has left virtually no room in any district for real change. We are the best example of the need for independent redistricting anywhere in the nation.

I can't wait to go vote "No" tomorrow to all of our tax-raising ballot measures. It's sad when liberals have to cut spending, but rather funny to watch the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

but hospitals can compute the amount of losses they incur from treating those who lack health coverage.

Since these losses run in the hundreds of thousands and millions who do you think picks up the tab for this loss.

Like all businesses hospitals pass on the cost to others. For people who work in hospitals, part of the losses are recovered by charging their own employees higher rates for their own insurance

But as usual christian moron, in your pathetic world, everything done by the dims is for the good of society but everything that goes wrong is always the fault of repubs.

There is a reason calif attracts huge numbers of illegals and welfare losers. Your state enables and rewards such people.

And why is your state assembly so handsomely paid. Seems the professionals running your state making salaries in excess of $100 K has done little more than drive calif to bankruptcy and is now proposing the taxpayers bailout these fools and their endless spending

But then again you always support his irresponsible behavior, it is being done b y the majority dims and in your pathetic world they can do no wrong

here are tax rates on capital gains and you will see that cutting them does not always increase revenue in fact, in many cases they get reduced.

In 1981, Congress approved very large supply-side tax cuts, dramatically lowering marginal income-tax rates. In 1990 and 1993, by contrast, Congress raised marginal income-tax rates on the well off. Despite the very different tax policies followed during these two decades, there was virtually no difference in real per-person economic growth in the 1980s and 1990s. Real per-person revenues, however, grew about twice as quickly in the 1990s, when taxes were increased, as in the 1980s, when taxes were cut.

Could accept all the policies going on in California is part of intentional undermining the strengths to make some changes the citizens of the world want.

People like Ted Turner who does not consider himself an American Citizen.
He sees himself as a Citizen of the world.

He and the obama are of like minds, and most all the people making policy today.

The obama explained his vision is a world view, not an American many times over and over again and people still do not get it.

They seem to believe its too outrageous our own government would work to weaken America and not make it strong.

You have to understand they cannot bring in the changes for the new world without first creating the chaos that justifies the changes.

Yes indeed, California is being destroyed INTENTIONALLY by Government officials who want the New world Order.

Because there are many in the media who support the nwo, they have been able to control the information the public is given.

What is done in the dark will soon be known in the light by the masses.

Reality of the destructive policies are coming very soon and now going on in record numbers.
Unemployment
Inflation and rising costs for the necessities of life

Difference between CA and Feds

However, not all crops can be picked with machinery, such as strawberries. there is no piece of equipment that can lay out grapes in the correct direction to dry in the sun to become raisins. I don't think you realize just how many different crops are grown in California. Of course the crops are coming to an end thanks to the environmentalists, which is another reason the economy here is in the tank as well as the budget. This state's economy was founded and based on agriculture, and a complete change has never taken place and never will unless the environmentalists are put into check. the hoops one has to jump through to start a business or build anything are ridiculous and have ceased to be profitable. Don't get me started on what the enviros have done to the fishing industry...

first we have had a republican governor for 5 years so liberals are not all to blame.

next, the dollar amount she quotes on illegals is false and simply made up.

do hospitals ask for verification of your citizenship, no, so there is not way to compute that number.

finally, not more than 2 years ago, california
had a huge surplus but then the bush recession hit.

here is what most people do not understand.

like family budgets, government budgets are based on expected income or revenue.

when that revenue drops by 35-45% there is going to be a problem.

many conservatives keep saying "cut spending".

look, if your income was cut in half in one month would you be able to cut spending enough in the next month to make it up.

not realistically.

now you could go out and get another job to make up the difference but a government entity cannot do that so then there is a need to raise taxes.

next, if your problem is shortage of expected revenue, cutting taxes only makes a bigger hole in your revenue flow.

there is a time when raising taxes is the only answer unless you want government to cease to exist, which i am sure some conservatives would opt for, but again, is not realistic.

Many--
Many of the people we all know including myself see the biggest problem with most of the problems we now face (illegal immigration, corruption, unfair taxation, dumbing down of education, the health care fiasco, and the frustration of all this) can be directly related to the politicians and the political sell-outs that abound almost everywhere. It is increasingly difficult to find solid conservative candidates who will follow the laws on the books honestly and uphold the rights of the constitution. Also the lobbyists and special interests of all types have a big hand in the political system (we all know this).
So, the problems will continue IMO as long as this all continues unabated or if these crises continue. I think that all thinking, pro America conservatives will very soon have to demand that all this corruption etc. change or there will be unlimited chaos. An analogy is like a simple infection that could have easily been cured, but neglected soon turns into a life threatening crisis. Time is running out.

In some places teachers may fair better than other professions. Here in California teachers have standards galore. Teachers union do have some power but not all for the bad and it is a democratic right.

As long as there are dopes out there who continue to drink the kool-aid and buy the rhetoric...

As long as people refuse to be educated, vote with their hearts and "feelings" instead of their heads and "knowledge"...

As long as there are drones who don't know that the election of this guy is a blow against the success of our nation...

As long as all of this and more continues to occur, people will NEVER learn.

Malthusian agriculture!!!
CA farmers don't modernize because they have NO INCENTIVE. All they have to do is say "Help Wanted" and the border trash comes running. If they converted to mechanized harvesting they could dump the Meheecano parasites and SAVE money in the long run.

We used to harvest wheat with scythes. EVER see one outside of a painting? Now we use giant combines that the farmers contract for.

Thanks to the ignorant masses. Seeing as that my job will end soon here in southern CA, I guess the silver lining is that I can leave this state. Too bad, the weather is great here.

The question is where to go? There appears to be no place to hide from the tenticles of big government and ignorant masses.

If will never work, 3% of Americans cannot pay for the insane spending, borrowing, debt monetization, printing, etc., going on in Washington.

Further, you forget all of those nice, REGRESSIVE taxes that are coming down the pike. Like cap-n-tax, sin taxes, online sales tax, sugar tax, energy taxes, gas taxes, and god knows what else.

"I try very hard not to lie, but my memory does play tricks on me."

I know, honey.

"I don't know where I said I was for illegals."

They, unfortunately, must go home. Spain and the Czech Republic are sending their immigrants back home because unemployment is so high. We need a new Constitutional Amendment that prohibits citizenship for anchor babies.

"To be honest though, we need many of them."

Close to $1bn a year in the prison system alone.

Perhaps, your welfare class and working poor should have to work the acreage, as an employee.

We need strong borders and to send illegals home.

Most crops are picked by machine and there are certainly more than enough american citizens looking for work they can join those ion the ag business.

But again you betray yourself. You claim not to support illegals but then maintain calif must have them.

So which is it, you don't sup[port illegals or that calif can only survive with huge masses of illiterate, untrained illegals that costs society thousands more in benefits they steal then they contribute to the growth of society.

Economists estimate society is billed some $20,000. more to maintain an illegal than he/she/it benefits society.

And to think calif employs a moron like you in the classroom. Someone with your level of stupidity must be in charge of hall monitors or patrolling the lunch room stopping food fights

For a long time, we had allowed seasonal migrant workers, but the more recent phenomenon of MILLIONS of ILLEGAL aliens staying put is another ball game entirely.

ILLEGALS tend to be just as poor and ignorant as migrants were, BUT they have come here in FAR greater numbers and pervaded FAR GREATER problems.

Pandemic social pathologies spread with them like the Black Death-- crimes, drugs, gangs, social service decimation, barrio blight, school enervation, bilingual and bicultural erosion.

See my post at 7:50 for several problems associated with unions, especially vis-a-vis guvment employees.

As for teacher compensation, they now often make MORE than other college grads with great benefits and uniquely attractive time off, but they resist performance standards and accountability, even as the unions protect the losers and buy the pols. Show me a candidate for governor who does not reflexively bray that we need to pay teachers more.

YEAH AND WE ARE THE CANARIES.

California/Michigan - models of failure
Everything that Ms. Liebau has written is ringing truth. And if one is tempted to think that this is an anomaly, check out Michigan which is in just about the same shape. Businesses are running like scalded dogs from these two model wellfare states. What we have here is two governments modeled after Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe. What a paradise on earth that is!

And Yet...
The dummies still havent figured it out. ITS THE DEMOCRATS, STUPID! The Dems al;ways manage to rope in a couple of fathead, loser Republiclowns so they can point to them and say, "They're just as bad!" "Its Bi-partisan!" The Unions use their exactions from their members to launch huge, expensive advertising campaigns featuring tearful firemen, cops and nurses all pleading with the Great Unwashed not to hurt The Children by voting against these wonderful Propositions. It works. The media in this state are WORSE than the national media, if that's possible. The Los Angeles Times is more in the pocket of the Dems than Granma is beholden to the Cuban government. I work in the film industry which means that my bosses and co-workers are leftists, the entire state government-commies, city-ditto, county-Obamunists to a man. The collapse is not far off...

Go where the money is
California should take a page from the Obama playbook and balance their budget by taxing all Hollywood income over $250,000 at 100%. I'm sure that all of the limousine liberals in la-la land would happily empty their wallets to save their great state.

The Constitution
can now be described as truly as dead as the canary. Its structure was designed to keep us from coming to this be we were all too good for their wisdom.

Not only that but we had to make ourselves feel better by handing out money left and right to those different from us. What's a buck here or a buck there to save our own image.

I cannot comprehend how that attitude has snowballed. Perhaps I just think well enough of myself that I don't have a need to impress others by coddling others. The idea is to get people educated and working. Only the most severely impaired should be at home.

And by the way, I not only saw our government at work as I did my second term as an RN. I also saw where some of the money went. Take a guess...it is a very simple answer.

The Glitter State

Gold is forever, glitter melts down and needs to be bailed out every 25 years or so.

Thank you for an excellent post. Money keeps flowing into services that make us feel good so the logic is that we must, therefore be, in the right direction.

Wrong, we are the rats following the Pied Piper into a depths. We are the canaries and we are going to die.

Manipulation!
When will people learn that the Liberals don't give a flying fig about the average person, and particularly the poor, in this country. They care about those with lots of money to donate, so they can get reelected... period.

Go ahead, keep electing them and you will see that California is only a forerunner. What is happening there is what this entire country will be going through in a short few years with the Master Manipulator in Chief in the White House.

No one seems to have put together that Obama's still campaigning, still manipulating, during his so called "townhall meetings". He's getting a huge head start and will continue to campaign all the way to November 2012.

45caliber
"First, why should I pay to bail out California for their stupidity?"

You are not going to have a choice. Pelosi, Feinstein, Boxer, Frank, Dodd, Rangel, Obama, "etc. will do it without our consent.

Actually, California was bailed out about twenty five years ago. Why do you think they ran up such a loss now?"

I agree, which is why I said for vote down the tax increases and fight tooth and nail to prevent a bailout.

"They expect us to do it again."

Oh, the people are not so much the problem. It is the Feds.

What they should do is rescind the $10bn for the high speed monorail that they voted for and use that money to attract employers back.

"As far as I'm concerned, they should simply be allowed to go their own way as a good bad example for the nation."

Agreed, but Obama will not let it happen. In fact, I would not be surprised if they tried to get rid of states altogether. They already tax, regulate, impose fees, etc., on us things that do not cross state lines and could fall under Federal jurisdiction pursuant to the Interstate Commerce Clause.

"California East"??
In NJ we are well on our way to becoming "California East". Our property taxes are amongst the highest, if not THE highest, in the nation and rising every year. Much of my tax dollars are flushed straight down the toilet that is Camden; thanks to a ruling over 20 years ago from a loser Governor Florio...if you live in a county with an inner-city school district, a good allotment of your tax dollars is shipped to that district. Meanwhile Camden continues to decline.

The same deal from CA holds true in education for NJ...there's no firing an incompetant or past-their-prime teacher; they are simply shuffled around to other positions until retirement or they decide to leave. In NJ you MUST join the "mafia" (ie: NJEA union) to work, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Meanwhile, what kind of "education" am I paying for?? A few weeks ago I noticed a list of vocabulary words my daughter brought home...every single word dealing with some aspect of black culture or "experience". They are educated on the "wonderful" aspects of the Muslim religion but can't say a prayer to the God they believe in.

In NJ cronyism and corruption are the norm. An individual earning a high salary in the private sector can add a part-time government job to their resume...and become eligible for a full pension from the government.

And all the while, we continue to elect blue-staters as governors...who continue to throw the taxpayers of the state under the bus.

Taft...
...you seem to be a good example of what is being discussed on another thread, here, today: if a democrat said it, it's not a lie. Obama said he would reduce taxes for "95%" of Americans - never mind that half of us pay no income taxes, i.e. an outright lie (which you have exaggerated to "97%").

Re illegals: The borders of a nation are an extension of the borders of a state. The borders of a state are an extension of the borders of its counties. The borders of counties are an extension of the borders of a municipality. The borders of a municipality are the borders of real property (e.g. the land on which you live). The borders of your land are the borders of your house. If the President is unwilling to protect National borders, then he is unwilling to protect you or your property. Dittos re Governors and Mayors.

If your personal property is not deemed worth protecting, what will be next? You will be next. In the not too distant future, welfare moms may be presented with the following choice: abort the baby in your womb, or we will cut back on the welfare payments you receive, now. And what will be done with the aborted infant? Its "parts" will be sold to the highest bidder, of course. No, I don't own any tin hats. Instead, I'm just a sad old man who is amazed by the level to which we have degraded ourselves.

If California is a Canary
If California is a Liberal's "canary in a coal mine" then the canary died.

Let's Try This!

If the CA fails to pass their tax increases referendum, then the Feds will bail them out. Should that happen, California can become a second District of Columbia, without representation, until they pay back the money.

CA, actually, please do not pass the tax increases and fight tooth and nail to prevent a bailout. Can you not see what strings the government will place on that money? Will Obama come in a fire all of your elected officials, seize private property, abrogate contracts, etc.? Just like Chrysler, GM, AIG, the banks, and insurance companies that have already received federal money.

Hang tight. You, too, MI, MA, NY, IL, etc., do not do it.

The simple reason calif has become a haven for illegals and other welfare parasites is your assembly rewards such behavior.

But as a low earner, by your own admittance your tax burden is isn't that great. You are probably another who pays little if any in fed income taxes but you still chastise the rest of us with big tax bills that are needed to support the welfare system you champion

but i can blame him for taxing my health benefits, raising my taxes by ending bush's tax cuts, taxing my heat and air and gas and food and everything still manufactured in this country as well as everything that is shipped. As well as any sin taxes he imposes.

And I've heard that argument about smokers -- as I only see the doctor when pregnant I pay thousands annually into private insurance and cost you nothing as it is private and i don't use it. Smokers statistically die sooner and don't cost as much in SS or medicare. The Czech Republic a few years ago did an analysis and determined that smokers would save them money in the long run. And until we start taxing the fat, drinkers, people with family histories, unmarried heterosexual men, gay men, etc. more for health insurance I don't want to hear about smoing as I pay more for both health and life insurance not to mention 85% of the cost of cigarrettes is taxes.

Illegal aliens are indeed a problem, but not the main problem. You can see this by looking at the many states, counties and cities around the nation that have few illegals, but their state and local govts. are facing similar runaway costs that far exceed rising tax revenues.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

A couple of KEY points-- that guvment growth you cite will be increasingly catering to ILLEGALS.

Second, ILLEGALS should NOT EVEN BE HERE to be a burden! We SHOULD BE enforcing existing laws leading to attritive repatriation.

Third, ILLEGALS DO TAKE good jobs away and suppress wages, even as unemployment approaches 10%.

Fourth, our immigration needs have changed as our socio-economy has evolved-- we NEED educated, skilled, LEGAL immigrants who will contribute, NOT the poor, ignorant, social service usurpers.

Taft

We have seen through this before, the Weimar government fought with anarchists, communists, socialists, industrialists, and on and on.

Never has monetizing your own debt worked. It causes a depression with hyperinflation.

One two governments have tried it in the last 100 years: The Weimar Government and Mugabe's Zimbabwe.

It is a one trick unicorn that no one has ever figured out how to ride.

reply to: Richard Rider
Some among us who see the enervating blights caused by ILLEGAL aliens (including social service decimation) are simply forward looking... we realize that 12 million given amnesty will morph into 100 million net new poor, ignorant and culturally disparate over just 20 years-- and new democrat voters voting in the permanent welfare state... meaning we will devolve into the third world from which the Mexicans have fled.

But daft is your loyal dim/socialist, when he isn't servicing the messiah he is spreading his ignorance about why the repubs have destroyed calif and the country but always giving the dims a pass.

But daft the stupid fails to understand one simple truth. For dims i n particular there is no such thing as collecting enough taxes. The dim contyrolled assembly in sacremento has found ways to spend every dime available to reward the same parasites daft claims to love and speak for.

Question of the Day: How do liberals maintain the requisite mental devotion needed to sustain the level of denial required to remain a liberal?

Excellent. I'll put that one in my pocket.

Roadmaster said: "The world doesn't owe you a living."

Yeah. I recently changed careers and took a job working for a union run nursing home. New faces...and new attitudes for damn sure.

I'd never seen a group do so little, call off so much, sleep(yes SLEEP!), mouth off to residents and nurses,... and expect no, demand everything their way like its Burger King or something. The level of entitlement expectation was jarring.

When, in conversation with the more teachable ones, I asked why people should get paid simply for breathing, they are taken aback.
"Thats mean.", "Shame on you.", "I'm not trying to listen to this.", "God don't like ugly." and so on.

They are more surprised at me for asking than I am surprised at them for thinking that way.

Taco Bell Ringers
I live in Ventura County, just northwest of Los Angeles County.
In June of 2007, just over 71% of the inmates in Ventura County jail were illegal immigrants. (None were there for merely violating immigration laws - we don't enforce those here in CA)
Just think, if the Feds had enforced their own laws, those people wouldn't even be here to commit crimes. I guess we could talk to the crime victims about "collateral damage" from immigration policy.

Quote About The Weimar Government

"In the Weimar Government, inflation caused the most devastating blow to the people and forever reconfigure the class structure, but the poor would just remain poor."

You should know that Hitler rose to power after the Weimar Government failed economically and lost to him in elections.

Last I looked the Ca. legislature appropriates the money.
The legislature simply raised the spending when most citizens had to tighten. Somewhere around 9% increase in the Ca. budget.
Rino Arnie tried to work out a solution that wouldn't bankrupt the state including (More)tax hikes and (Than) "Spending Cuts".
Sounds eerily familiar to the obortion budget and spending policy. Hence the conclusion of the article.
Nice try to pin it on conservatives though.

Maybe you should quit smoking, you won't regret it. When I was a drywaller I smoked alot, and I'm very glad I was able to quit. And, you can't blame Obama for local taxes going up. it was the republicans that were on watch when the recession hit. Not only in California, but the death knell has come for the country.

A $787bn stimulus.

A several hundred billion dollar budget for signed in March.

A $3.6tn budget.

A national debt of $23.9tn dollar in 10 years.

Annual debt service of $1tn starting in 2019.

Continuing unemployment increases and home fallings that have fallen.

Gas prices of $3 gallon this summer.

Higher energy costs because of the recision of offshore leases in the Gulf on Mexico and Alaska that are dated beginning 01.01.07. Plus, a coal industry that Obama is going to go after with solar and wind only making up 1% of the nation's energy supply.

Inflation going to 3% shortly and much higher because of the Federal Reserve's printing trillions and massive spending.

Food prices increasing.

Stock portfolios decimated.

China cutting up our credit cards.

Russia, China, and France cautioning Obama's spending.

A $2tn national healthcare bill.

A gigantic welfare state taught in the indoctrination camps known as public schools.

First, Obama said his spending was a responsible "investment". Then, last Thursday he said it was "unsustainable". Ya think?

Yep, welcome to Obamanation.

Politicians don't set anyone's salaries.
Taft have you heard of minimum wage? How about the demands out of Washington on CEO salaries? Just saying, as you seem to bu just full of information.

Taft
Key Word "pre-recession".

The Messiah has changed course over much of his campaign rhetoric and taxes will probably be next.

The numbers just simply don't add up. Don't get me wrong -- neither did Bush's -- but at some point the price will have to be paid in some manner or another -- taxes, inflation, growth. Obama has quadrupled down on Bush's liberalism -- I'm afraid the end result won't be pretty.

Taft
"Sammy
If you believe what your preaching, why aren't you an Obama fan? He wants to lower taxes for 97% of the American people! This 4th I'm making a special toast to him."

Last Thursday, Obama said that his spending was "unsustainable".

Members of the Administration and Pelosi have stated that all options are on the table, including tax increases for everyone.

Tax increases for health insurance, even if you keep your own policy.

Energy tax increases.

Sin taxes.

Sugar taxes, including on juice.

Gasoline taxes.

And, on and on.

There is no way only 3-5% of Americans can pay for everyone else. I will post the $ figures for everything thus far and economic numbers.

Even if the government seized all income over $75K, it would not even be a drop in the bucket.

I am sorry if you believed campaign promises, but campaign promises almost never come true when the reality of governing hits politicians right between their eyes.

Well Taft
he's raised taxes on smokers. Then there was the news that many people getting the whopping 13 dollars a week will owe taxes on it at the end of the year.

Then there are the discussions of taxing soda and alcohol, not to mention employer health benefits to fund insurance for those who don't work or aren't here legally or won't pay for their own insurance. If they tax health insurance I'm looking at an extra 3500 dollars a year in taxes.

Then when the Bush tax cuts expire the average family is looking at a 2 thousand dollar increase -- I'm looking at about 10 thousand.

Then there is cap and trade i currently pay about 900 dollars a month to heat my house but the average person is looking at at least 2 thousand a year in increases. I'm looking at 6000 or more.

I also smoke so if Obama gets his way in all of this my household is looking at about 21,000 thousand dollars in additional taxes. That is before we factor in the coming increases in FICA and medicare taxes. I can tell you right now I will arrange my life accordingly if this comes to fruition. I have no intention of working and behaving responsibly so that others can come here illegally or sit home and watch Maury.

Sammy
Hey, I think Miss North Carolina deserved to win. The poor girl has been forgotten.

Obama's pre-recession tax plan was basically the same as Clinton's, and still is, as far as I know.

Taft
"Fair enough, but, just how much has he raised your taxes? Zero, right?"

Give the man some time -- he's barely 100 days into remaking AmeriKa into his socialist paradise. Also, it depends on your definition of the word "taxes". As we all know politicians of all stripes can use this term very loosely. I consider the looming hyper inflation to be a version of a tax.

California needs
to pass an initiative/referendum that requires ALL governments and businesses report illegal aliens to ICE. It could cut off state funding to all local governments that refuse and cut off government contracts to businesses that also refuse. This would make the state less attractive to illegal aliens.

LD
I couldn't find any article with facts like you posted at the LA Times. Maybe it was at one of their blogs, which doesn't necessarily carry the credible weight of the paper. Mexicans, the legal ones, have been a great asset to our state.

Sammy

Fair enough, but, just how much has he raised your taxes? Zero, right?

LuLu
Politicians don't set anyone's salaries. Do they in Virginia?

Taft
"If you believe what your preaching, why aren't you an Obama fan?"

Well, because I basically disagree with everything Obama stands for -- is that a good enough reason not to be an Obama fan? I'm only preaching the bad news to conservatives that good news is not necessarily around the corner for Republicans waiting to capitalize on the inevitable failures of Obama's socialism. California and Michigan are two examples of where this logic doesn't hold true. FDR getting elected 4 times while never really delivering us from the Great Depression is another.

"He wants to lower taxes for 97% of the American people!"

And I've got some coastal property in Arizona that you might be interested in!

America's cost

67% of births
75% of most wanted
40% do not pay taxes
67% of occupants in HUD properties
All paid for by taxes!
Per L.A. Times!

Public service and teacher's unions
should be banned from giving campaign donations. It is absurd that these organizations can give money to the politicians that set their salaries. How in the world is this considered reasonable or an idea that doesn't lead to immediate corruption.

Sammy
If you believe what your preaching, why aren't you an Obama fan? He wants to lower taxes for 97% of the American people! This 4th I'm making a special toast to him.

Apparently
MD instituted a millionaire's tax, and one third of them left the state. The result: despite the tax increase the state generated 100 million dollars less from this demographic.

For some reason, politicians and voters who both go out of their way to avoid paying taxes keep thinking that the rich will just fall into line and pay more and more despite the fact they already pay the bulk of the taxes in this country.

And even better politicians and a majority of voters now want to define the rich as anyone earning more than they do -- this is unsustainable.

Publius
As with all man made institutions, unions have there bad side, but I don't see a legitimate case made here against them. SFA asks, "then why is California broke?" Some of its over spending, and much of it is why the the rest of the nation is in trouble, the recession.

State Bail Outs....
California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, all share two things incommon. All are operated by democrates and run by unions. All are asking for government bail out money because of poor government leadership, government programs with endless dumping of dollars and continued taxation of the common people for the good of the whole. Business is moving out of NJ moving to Del. because of taxes. People are moving because of the tax burden put on us.NJ now has an exit tax ! You sell your house and move out of state, it will cost you ! Liberial Democatic leadership will convert this great country into what NJ is now. Maybe I'll retire in Ireland.....

California's Political Lesson
California's frightening political message to the rest of the country is that past performance doesn't necessarily predict future results. In other words the failures of liberalism doesn't necessarily mean future victories for conservatives. The Democrats and liberals have ruined California and yet they still dominate the state with no real possibilities for Conservative gains in the state.

How can this happen? Doesn't logic dictate that if Plan A fails you try Plan B? If Leader A fails you replace him and try Leader B? The problem is that liberals hold many trump cards that throws normal logic out the window.

Trump Card Number 1 is that they have engineered the system so that a majority of the electorate pays little to nothing in taxes yet their vote holds the same value as those who pay significantly more. Primarily due to absurd levels of immigration (legal and otherwise) the net tax receivers will continue to overwhelm the net tax payers ushering in even more Democrats and liberal policies despite their failures.

Trump Card Number 2 - Democrats have succeeded in expanding entitlements and benefits to the middle class. Despite how bad things may get most people will fight to the death for their "certain" government handouts over the uncertain prospect of greater opportunity offered by Conservatives.

To those waiting for Obama's failures to sweep in the next Conservative revolution... You might be waiting an awfully long time.

And, they wonder why???
Just this weekend I was talking to my nephew, a tramp Union journeyman electrician who just spent the last 18 months working off the Union board in Sacremento....

He has now returned to Texas, brought this huge pile of cash with him (because his overtime pay was close to $100 an hour), and he tells me he qualified to draw 72 weeks worth of un-employment from California, thanks to Barack NObama.

California
It is the D(istant)E(arly)W(arning) LIne for social, economic, political and cultural the rest of the United States.
Did the Pacific Ocean stop the restless, the dissatisfied and the Utopian dreamers from going farther West?
Was it Horace Greeley who had the slogan, "Go West, young man."
Will the misbehaving humans be driven out of their Eden-again?

Mexifornia should know...
The Conspiracy of Evil

The biggest challenge to stopping ILLEGAL aliens is that the money and organization (hence power) is mainly on the pro-ILLEGAL side. The pro-ILLEGAL forces include an unlikely, strange bedfellow alliance between groups which want to USE them in different ways--> the Conspiracy Of Evil.

Miscreant employers obviously simply want to exploit their labor-- never mind the myriad, egregious socio-economic problems they foist on America... hence, their all-in costs to society are immense and snowballing. Furthermore, the "savings" to miscreant employers are pocketed by them --> your hotel room or head of lettuce is NO cheaper to YOU.

The PC left wants to get ILLEGALS voting and seize permanent control for leftist "elites" via yet more inexorable big entitlement government... power flows to statist 'Crats/the left when YOUR tax $ flows to Washington. Try to find a liberal who does not really favor scamnesty, while feigning talk about enforcement first.

The scandal-plagued Catholic Church needs replacement bodies for the pews; and ILLEGALS can put more in the collection plates in America than in Mexico... the Church still has mega-millions to pay out for priest perversion (after deciding to forgive each priest one act of perversion-- Jesus!):

Ethnocentric Hispanic groups really do want an effective Reconquista, so they hide behind claims of racism and pleas for PC multiculturalism and one world, NWO kumbaya.

Finally, the remote elites, including the liberal MSM, do not see what all the fuss is about. Besides, they LIKE their cheap ILLEGAL maids and yard-workers, and THEIR children will not have to go to schools enervated by "those people."

But, California is not unique...
New York suffers similar libwad stumble....

I read this one in a Rochester news radio front page:

"Paychex billionaire Tom Golisano displayed his new Florida driver's license on an overhead projector at a leadership conference Thursday morning. Golisano pointed out that the excess of New York's income tax over Florida's totals $13,800 per day for him; he said "a lot" of New Yorkers find themselves "in the same boat as I am." Golisano is also a former New York gubenatorial candidate and current owner of the Buffalo Sabres..."

Keep in mind, this is/has already been happening on the national stage as the wealthy has moved their fortunes off-shore to far more friendly environments.

Taft
Need we remind you that Arnold inherited his problems from Gray Davis, the liberal Dumbocrook who was recalled after he was found to have misled the people of California? That state has groaned under the burden of liberal policies for decades. The unions run the show out there and the state le
