After surviving an assassination attempt, support for former President Donald Trump has come out of the woodwork, with people who once swore they'd never vote for him to those now saying he can unify the country.
According to a Morning Consult poll, 46 percent of respondents support Trump, compared to 42 percent who favor President Joe Biden. This four-point lead is Trump’s largest polling advantage since February.
Nationally, Trump is now up by five points and up by three points across crucial key battleground states. This would be the first time in nearly 20 years a Republican presidential candidate won the national popular vote and 30 years since a Republican won by five points.
Biden’s standing with Americans has been hemorrhaging for some time now. Despite Trump facing countless indictments, a federal conviction, and a would-be assassination, the former president’s approval rating keeps getting stronger.
On the contrary, one lousy debate performance and a cold have severely damaged Biden’s poll numbers.
Meanwhile, a CBS News/YouGov survey found that 52 percent of voters are more likely to vote for Trump than they were on July 3 (50 percent).
For Biden, only 47 percent indicated they would vote for him— down one percentage point from earlier this month.
The president’s support among his own party is dwindling. As Democrat leaders call for Biden to exit the 2024 race, voters nationwide are also quickly abandoning him.
Only 85 percent of Democrats say they support Biden, while 95 percent of Republicans favor Trump.
The poll also asked which candidate they believe will fight for the American people, with Trump in the lead (37 percent).
Twenty-eight percent said Biden would put the American people first. Vice President Kamala Harris and GOP presumptuous Vice President JD Vance were tied, with just 26 percent of respondents saying they would fight the most for the country.
According to several reports, Biden is considering dropping out of the race as his family and Democratic colleagues devise a plan for his exit.
The president is expected to withdraw as soon as this weekend, with Harris taking his place.
However, her odds don’t fare well against Trump. The poll found that 51 percent of Americans would vote for Trump, while only 48 percent would choose Harris.
