Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT), formerly a presidential hopeful, threw his support behind former Vice President Joe Biden on a joint livestream on Monday afternoon. Sen. Sanders’ support this early is surprising, after much speculation as to whether or not the self-proclaimed socialist would endorse the presumed nominee.

Biden and Sanders fought viciously during the primary, especially on issues of healthcare and the environment, which are important to Democratic voters. Sen. Sanders’ painted the former vice president as too moderate, while Biden characterized Sen. Sanders’ far-left policy proposals as unfeasible. Sen. Sanders’ hammered former Vice President Biden on votes during his time in the Senate, including the Iraq War and the 1994 Crime Bill.

After pledging his support, Biden praised the efforts of Sen. Sanders:

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) postponed the party’s convention, originally slated for June, to August on account of COVID-19. Former Vice President Joe Biden has virtually locked up the nomination.
