Mary Margaret Olohan of the Daily Caller News Foundation reports that a Texas town has voted to declare itself a "sanctuary city for the unborn." Similar to "sanctuary cities" pushed by leftist Democrats hoping to protect illegal aliens from deportation by federal authorities, Waskom, TX hopes to save unborn babies from abortion. The city council defied state and federal law last week by banning abortion completely.
Olohan reports that Waskom's decision "was pushed by Right to Life of East Texas and precedes another bill Texas lawmakers are pushing, which would require doctors to care for babies born alive following botched abortions. Abortions are not permitted in the state of Texas after 20 weeks."
“Congratulations Waskom, Texas for becoming the first city in Texas to become a ‘Sanctuary City for the Unborn’ by resolution and the first city in the Nation to become a ‘Sanctuary City for the Unborn’ by ordinance,” Right To Life of East Texas Director Mark Lee Dickson in a Facebook post according to the DCNF . “Although I did have my disagreements with the final version, the fact remains that abortion is now OUTLAWED in Waskom, Texas!”
Waskom's Mayor Jesse Mayor acknowledged that the city might be sued by pro-abortion groups like NARAL and Planned Parenthood. If that is the case, Waskom would not be able to afford the legal fees.
“If we go to the Supreme Court and lose this then we’re going to have to pay the other side of the attorney fees and stuff like that,” the mayor said. However, he did say that an Austin-based attorney offered to provide pro-bono assistance in the case they are sued.
As Olohan noted, "supporters of the bill are not worried about monetary issues, telling local media that 'God will take care of them.'"
