Of course, the entire idea of trotting out ones spouse as a prop is questionable.  There is no doubt that it works -- or at least -- it's better than the alternative (her being visibly absent).  Yet, they are willing to do it. 

It sort of reminds me of when a hostage is brought out in front of a camera for propaganda purposes ...
