Jim Geraghty was the first to ask him about John Fund's column today, in which Fund writes that McCain "indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito, because 'he wore his conservatism on his sleeve'."
Regarding Fund's column, McCain said:
“I don’t recall a conversation that I would have said that sort of thing ... I just think that it’s important to say what my record was on Alito – my advocacy – my hard work to try to get him confimed ... I think the White House would be the first to tell you that John McCain would be out there slugging for them.”
He also added: "… literally, every town hall meeting I’ve said we’re going to have judges like Roberst and Alito." (This rings true for me, as I'm sure I've heard him say this at least a dozen times).
My concern with this is that it all depends on what Fund meant when he said McCain "indicated" ...
McCain also took a few shots at Mitt Romney, saying Romney created “… the 3rd worst economy of any state in America" and that Romney gave Massachusetts a “… 245 million debt because of his government mandated healthcare plan.”
On a much lighter note, I asked him why Pat Buchanan recently said on MSNBC that they used to be friends. McCain responded:
