Actually, he is rather conservative on many issues:

Mr. Hagel's overall record is solid, said American Conservative Union Chairman David A. Keene.

"Chuck Hagel is bright, decent and conservative on almost allissues," Mr. Keene said. "Indeed, his lifetime ACU rating is over 85,and we consider anyone who scores 80 or above a fairly reliableconservative."
But the strident war opposition won't find him any easy purchase in the Republican primary. When I clicked over to Huffington Post this morning to see what they were squawking about, Hagel was the top headline:

Hagel: Before this is over, you might see calls for Bush's impeachment
Once you've become top news at the Huff, I think you're fairly unlikely to win a Republican primary.
