The Story of Sgt. Daniel Clay (and other SOTU Notes)

I found a bit in the Pensacola News-Journal (his hometown), but not a full story:

Marine Staff Sgt. Daniel J. Clay, 27, died Dec. 1 in a roadside bombing near Fallujah.

The son of Sara Jo and Bud Clay of Pensacola, he and his wife, Lisa, resided in California.

He was a 1996 graduate of Washington High School.

He was remembered during a memorial service at Pensacola Naval Air Station onDec. 10 and buried Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery.

This passage is at the bottom of the right rail on this page.

Here's a letter from Daniel's dad, Bud Clay, to the President. It includes the letter from Daniel, which Bush quoted tonight.

A solution for pork?

"We can tackle this problem together if you pass the line-item veto."

Today's Democratic Party:

Ok, Bush's line about two of his dad's favorite people turning 60 this year-- him and President Clinton. That was funny, bipartisan, and sweet, and Hillary couldn't even spare a smile. She is so very unlikeable.

She can, however, spare a smile and standing O for doing absolutely nothing to address the Social Security problem. There's the Democratic Party in a nutshell, huh? "Today's Democratic Party-- You Got Problems? We Got Nuthin', and We'll Applaud the Heck Out of Ourselves For It."

The first use of the word "double":

Urg. At least we made it to 9:51 p.m.

First: I propose to double the Federal commitment to the most critical basic research programs in the physical sciences over the next ten years. This funding will support the work of America’s most creative minds as they explore promising areas such as nanotechnology, supercomputing, and alternative energy sources.

Moving beyond parody:

One of the Kos threads is actually titled "Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire!"

Yeah, well, yo momma is soooo...

Delivery style:

Bush seemed very relaxed tonight. I'm generally a little nervous watching him speak, though that's gotten better over the years. Tonight, I was very comfortable. He had a bit of a swagger, leaned a little on the podium, and smiled and winked a couple times. He's much better when he's got that air about him.

Sheehan update (10:12 p.m.):

Apparently, she was actually arrested, not just detained.

Forbes says Rep. Woolsey gave Sheehan a ticket when the two met at a Code Pink rally this week. Perfect.

Reuters says she was arrested after unfurling a banner of some sort.
