A Controversial Transgender Clinic for Children Is Closing

Earlier this year, Townhall covered how more than 70 children aged three and four were sent to the United Kingdom’s NHS dedicated pediatric transgender clinic before it was shut down. This happened after a report showed serious issues with the clinic’s approach to “trans care” for children. And since then, the United Kingdom has pulled back significantly on its transgender agenda aimed at children.

This week, reports broke that one transgender clinic for kids in the United States that was at the center of controversy will close down.

The Washington University School of Medicine Pediatric Gender Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital is closing, a whistleblower who used to work at the clinic announced on Wednesday.

To recap, last year, Jamie Reed, a former healthcare worker at the transgender clinic spoke out in a bombshell report in The Free Press about how “morally and medically appalling” “gender-affirming” health care is on young people, which Townhall covered.

In the report, Reed recounted her experience working as a case manager at the Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. There, Reed worked for four years and saw “around a thousand” young people who were struggling with their gender identity.

“I left the clinic in November of last year because I could no longer participate in what was happening there. By the time I departed, I was certain that the way the American medical system is treating these patients is the opposite of the promise we make to ‘do no harm.’ Instead, we are permanently harming the vulnerable patients in our care,” Reed wrote in her piece.

In addition, Reed claimed that “anyone who raised doubts [about the care] ran the risk of being called a transphobe.”

All in all, Reed said the experience felt like “building the plane while we are flying it.”

In response to the report, St. Louis Children’s said they were “alarmed” by the allegations and that they took that matter “very seriously and have already begun the process of looking into the situation to ascertain the facts.”

“As always, our highest priority is the health and well-being of our patients. We are committed to providing compassionate, family-centered care to all of our patients and we hold our medical practitioners to the highest professional and ethical standards,” the statement added.

Additionally, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, announced an investigation into the center.

When news broke that the center would close it's doors, Bailey issued a statement.

“This is a huge win for the rule of law and for the safety of our children,” Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey said in a statement.

“As a father of four and as Attorney General, I want Missouri to be the safest state in the nation for children. The closure of any clinic that has mutilated children is a major step towards that goal. I will not stop until the clandestine network of clinics mutilating children is permanently dismantled and bad actors are held accountable,” he said.
