McCabe Is Soliciting Online Donations to Help Pay For His Legal Defense

Fired FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe has a GoFundMe page set up to solicit contributions to his legal defense fund.

“The support for Andrew #McCabe has been overwhelming, humbling & deeply appreciated,” Melissa Schwartz, a spokesperson for McCabe, said Thursday on Twitter. “Unfortunately, the need for a legal defense fund is a growing reality.”

While the initial fundraising goal was set at $150,000, the amount was later increased after an outpouring of support.

“Andrew McCabe’s FBI career was long, distinguished, and unblemished.  He embraced the most daunting, difficult, and important challenges that the FBI and the country could assign to him over the past 21 years.  He served the United States with courage and distinction in the days following the President's summary dismissal of former Director James Comey, in one of the most tumultuous periods in the Bureau’s history,” states the page, set up by “Friends of Andrew McCabe.” “His reward for that has been a termination that was completely unjustified, amidst repeated ad hominem attacks by the President of the United States.”

Despite the description, McCabe was fired by Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the recommendation of the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility for being untruthful in his review of the email investigation into Hillary Clinton.

According to Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), the DOJ’s inspector general report about McCabe’s truthfulness reveals he “lied four times about leaking information to the press: once to the Office of Professional Responsibility, once to former FBI Director James Comey and twice under oath to the inspector general,” Fox News reports

At the time of writing, nearly 9,000 people had contributed more than $377,000 to the fund.
