Dem Senator: My Constituents Really Don't Care About Russia

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy acknowledged Tuesday that his constituents really don’t care all that much about the investigation into whether Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

Speaking with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell about his 5-day walking tour of Connecticut, Murphy said his constituents didn’t talk too much about Russia.

“I talked to mainly people who were totally apolitical, and they didn’t raise Afghanistan, obviously [Trump’s] speech hadn’t happened [yet], but they also didn’t talk too much about Russia,” Murphy said. “They talked about health care primarily, that was loud and clear, the most important issue to them. They talked about the quality of their kids’ schools, how much money they were earning in their paycheck.”


This isn’t the first time Murphy has acknowledged the Russia probe isn’t really going anywhere because there’s been no hard evidence of collusion. 

“We certainly don’t have a smoking gun today,” Murphy declared in May.

And a month later, he even called the Russia probe a “distraction” that’s hurting Democrats.

“The fact that we had spent so much time talking about Russia has you know, has been a distraction from what should be the clear contrast between Democrats and the Trump agenda which is on economics,” he said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“You know, when I'm back in Connecticut, I often get on a commuter bus and ride it for just an hour to talk to folks that, you know, frankly don't normally call my office or write my office. And I'll just say they are never talking about issues like Russia. They are not talking frankly about what's on cable news at night. They are talking about the same things -- wages, they're talking about education, they're talking about public safety.”
