Sen. Hirono on Leftists Targeting GOP in Their Homes and at Restaurants: They're Just Very 'Motivated'

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) defended extreme leftists harassing GOP lawmakers at their homes and in restaurants on CNN Sunday.

"It is one thing to protest at the Supreme Court,” CNN’s Dana Bash told Hirono, “it's another thing to run senators out of restaurants, go to their homes. Is that going too far?"

"I think that it just means that there are a lot of people who are very, very much motivated by what is going on,” Hirono replied, “because what happened with Judge Kavanaugh is from the very beginning, this was not a fair process."

Hirono then claimed that Republicans sent the message that they didn’t want to hear from Kavanaugh’s accuser Christine Blasey Ford despite the fact that they accommodated her so she could testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on her sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh.

Bash interrupted Hirono, pressing her about the tactics of the protesters.

"Should the going after people at restaurants stop?" she asked.

"Well, this is what happens, you know, because when you look at white supremacists and all of that, this is what is coming forth in our country," Hirono replied. "There is a tremendous divisiveness in our country, but this is the kind of activism that occurs, and people make their own decisions. If they violate the law, then they have to account for that."

Sen. Hirono has been very aggressive in the Kavanaugh confirmation battle. At one point, she argued that all the men in this country and in the Senate needed to "shut up" about the Kavanaugh controversy.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was recently chased out of a D.C. restaurant by protestors over his past friendship with Kavanaugh. Even his Democratic opponent Beto O’Rourke said it was “not right that Senator Cruz and his wife Heidi were surrounded and forced to leave a restaurant last night because of protesters,” adding that “the Cruz family should be treated with respect.”
