Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the ranking member on the House Judiciary and Oversight and Reform Committees, explained on Wednesday how House Democrats are appearing to not be interested in truly providing oversight to the federal government's response to the Wuhan coronavirus through a newly established select committee.
Jordan said the first steps taken by Democrats on the select committee proves it's all about "political theatre."
"The very first action this committee took to restructure things was to send a letter, as ranking member [Steve] Scalise mentioned, to send a letter to Universal Stainless and try to put steelworkers in ... Pennsylvania and Ohio, put steel workers in the unemployment line. You don't have to take my word for it: Conor lamb and Tim Ryan - two Democrats sent a letter saying 'what are you doing to this company with steelworkers working there?'" Jordan said.
"The second action this committee took was this unfair hearing itself. Didn't follow the rules, didn't give proper notice, didn't give the briefing memo, didn't give us any witnesses, didn't even ask the Republicans who we might like for a witness," he continued.
Jordan said Democrats are trying to make President Trump look bad after taking steps to restrict travel to China and cut off American funds to the World Health Organization as the U.S. investigates its ties to the Chinese Communist Party.
"So I'm wondering what the objective is here? Because it's an unfair hearing the way we're doing this today - via videoconference - when we should be meeting, as the ranking member said, in a room with the proper social distancing asking question and we're doing it this way. I think it's all partisan," he concluded.
