It’s a debate that’s been raging for over a decade. But now, newly-knighted Sir Idris Elba has put the rumors to rest: He will not be playing the next James Bond.

After years of fans trying to push for him to become the world famous icon with a License to Kill, it appears it’s time to consider other contenders. If it had happened, Elba would have become the first black British actor to play the character, a prospect some have cheered and others have jeered.

“It was never legit. It was always just a rumour,” Elba told GQ. It all began when Daniel Craig, who was the best Bond so far (I’ll fight y’all on this) said former President Barack Obama’s victory signified that society reached a point where we can have a black James Bond.

“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing,” Elba said, also noting that the character “was written how he was written for a reason.” He further pointed out that audiences won’t “go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond” and that “That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond,” the actor added.

This is not the first time Elba has dispelled the rumors. He has stated before that he was never in the running to play the MI6 agent.

Fans and media outlets have also suggested several other black British actors for the role. These include Paapa Essiedu, Aaron Pierre, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and several other names I’ve never heard of.

Race bending has become a hotly debated topic in the world of entertainment lately. There was a big outcry when it was revealed that Lupita N’yongyo, an African actress, would be playing Helen of Troy in the upcoming “The Odyssey” film. There was another uproar when Disney cast a black girl as Ariel in the live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid.”

I’ll admit that I’m completely inconsistent on this topic. In some cases, I’m fine with race bending. In others, I’m not.

If Idris Elba did play Bond, he’s probably the only black actor I’d accept. I didn’t mind when Marvel cast Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury even though the character is white in the comics. Denzel Washington playing a historically white character in “Gladiator 2” didn’t bother me (although that film was an overall atrocity). But, if they decided to make Peter Parker/Spider-Man or Bruce Wayne/Batman black, I’d be up in arms.

I have no idea why I’m okay with it in some instances and not in others. But in Bond’s case, I’d see the movies regardless of who’s playing him, assuming the acting and storytelling is on par with previous films.

I typically prefer creating new characters for racial minorities, similar to how Marvel created Miles Morales as a black/Hispanic Spider-Man character rather than darkening Peter Parker’s skin. But even in these situations, I’d rather have someone completely unique telling a unique story.

Speaking of Denzel Washington, I’m sure most of us can agree that he was amazing in “The Equalizer” franchise. They didn’t need to use already existing property to bolster the film — they just told an amazing story with an amazing actor.

I think race bending works in some cases. But I’d still prefer that Tinseltown focus more on making entertaining, meaningful stories than worrying about which race to cast as certain characters.
