Supreme Court To Hear School Choice Case This Fall

The state of Arizona can't seem to stay out of the news these days! On Monday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal to end a lawsuit challenging Arizona's tax breaks for private school donations.

The 13 year old program provides dollar for dollar tax breaks to people who donate to private schools. Can't think of any reason to object to that? A few Arizona taxpayers could. According to the Washington Post:

Some Arizona taxpayers challenged the program as unconstitutional because religious organizations award most of the scholarships and require children to enroll in religious schools. The suit says the program amounts to an unconstitutional state endorsement of religion.

Of course, the government isn't directly giving money to religious organizations, only giving tax breaks to people who do (just like any other type of charity). We'll see what happens this fall.
