47 Million People Enrolled in Food Stamps for 13 Months in a Row

Any signs of the economy getting better clearly aren’t taking into account that the number of people still requiring government assistance to buy food. According to the most recent data, over 47 million U.S. citizens are currently enrolled in the food stamp program.

The most recent figures from the USDA show that in August 2012 there were 47,102,765 individuals enrolled in the SNAP program. Since then the number of enrollments has never gone below 47 million and now the number stands at 47,665,069.

That number means that almost 1 out of every 7 people are collecting food stamps. The program has seen a sharp increase in enrollees since January of 2009. Back then 31.9 million people were collecting SNAP benefits where that number is now over 47.6 million.

Tell me those numbers don’t show a program that is completely out of control and needs reforming…
